If you happen to be one of the users who often makes mistakes in their spellings, you might like a spell checker to inform and fix your spelling errors. WordPad is one of the apps that lacks this checker and this guide tells you how to do a WordPad spell check on your Windows 10 computer.
WordPad is one of the best document creators and text editors available out there. It provides you with Microsoft Word like features but at no cost to you. It’s a completely free app that comes preloaded on all Windows machines out there.
That being said, there are certain features that users wish they had in WordPad. Spell checker is one of the missing features in WordPad, and it’s quite strange that a Word processor like this doesn’t have a basic feature like that.
Fortunately, there are developers who understand the pain of users like you. Some of them have actually gone ahead and developed an application that lets you add a spell checker to WordPad and all other apps on your Windows computer. The following shows how to get and use the app on your computer.
Add Spell Checker to WordPad on Windows 10

Step 4. Unlike standard programs that show a panel on your screen, tinySpell won’t show anything like that. Instead, it’ll get added to your taskbar and you can control it from there.
Step 5. There’s actually nothing that you need to configure in order to enable spell checker in WordPad on your computer. All you now need to do is launch WordPad and start writing your text.
Step 6. As soon as you make a mistake in your spellings, a red warning will appear above the word. Click on the warning and you’ll see several suggestions for your mis-spelled word. You can click on any of these words and your word will be replaced by it.
tinySpell comes with its own dictionary and so it can detect a number of mis-spelled words and offer suggestions to fix them. You can even add your own words to this dictionary. There are several other options as well that you can modify in the tool on your computer.
Add your Own Words to tinySpell Dictionary
If there’s a word that you often use in your texts but it doesn’t happen to be one of the standard dictionary words, you can add it to the tinySpell dictionary and the app won’t detect it as a mis-spelled word.
Step 1. Right-click on the tinySpell icon on your taskbar and select the option that says Dictionary. It’ll open the tool’s dictionary on your screen.
Step 2. On the following screen, type in the word that you want to get added to the dictionary. Then, click on the Add button from the left-hand side menu.
The word will be added and saved in the dictionary.
Disable Spell Checker in Certain Apps on Windows 10
If you want to disable the spell checker in certain apps on your computer, the app allows you to do it from its settings menu. You can actually define a list of apps that the spell checker must not work in. It also lets you select the apps only in which the spell checker should work.
Step 1. Find the tinySpell icon on your taskbar, right-click on it, and select the option that says Applications.
Step 2. On the following screen, ensure the Enabled option is tick-marked. Then, click on the button that says Add to add an app to the list. This is the app in which tinySpell won’t work.
Step 3. Use the dropdown menu on the following screen and choose one of the apps to disable the spell checker in. Then, click on OK to save the changes.
From now on, the tool won’t work in your specified apps on your Windows 10 computer.
Microsoft has added a new feature on Windows 10 to autocorrect misspelled words and word suggestions with hardware keyboards. However, this function is not available in its predecessors. To add your own word to its dictionary, right-click on the tinySpell icon in the system tray, click Dictionary to open it, click Add button, and then enter a word that you would like to add to the custom dictionary.
TinySpell offers a spelling check service for all Windows programs. But if you want to use it to work with Notepad and WordPad only, you can configure tinySpell to work with desired programs. To do so, right-click on the tinySpell icon in the system tray and then click Applications to configure tinySpell to work with certain apps only.

Scroll down to Hardware keyboard and turn on Show text… and Autocorrect…
Open WordPad and receive suggestions as you type.
Oh yes, it works in Notepad, too. And it also works everywhere you type using the keyboard, so you might want to turn the option off unless you are using WordPad.

Привет, Хабр! Сегодня расскажем о нововведениях в привычном для многих из нас базовом текстовом редакторе «Блокнот». Изменения ввели не просто так. Этому предшествовала история с другим текстовым редактором, входившим в комплект штатных утилит Windows — Microsoft WordPad. Что произошло и чего теперь ждать от «Блокнота», рассказываю под катом.
Что стряслось?
Долгое время и WordPad, и «Блокнот» входили в состав штатных утилит Windows. А в 2020 году вышло обновление для Windows 10, и пользователи получили возможность удалять WordPad.
WordPad — упрощенная и весьма шустрая версия Word. Она потребляла мало системных ресурсов, и ей практически не требовалось подключение к интернету — в отличие от большинства современных офисных пакетов. Но в Microsoft решили не переносить устаревший софт в новую версию Windows.
В феврале 2024 года представители компании сообщили: «Начиная с этой сборки WordPad и “Люди” (People) больше не будут инсталлироваться в ходе “чистой” установки ОС. В будущей версии WordPad удалится при обновлении. WordPad нельзя переустановить. WordPad — устаревшая функция Windows».
Так и произошло: текстовый редактор убрали из списка дефолтных приложений в новой версии ОС после выхода пакета обновлений.
Возвышение «Блокнота»
«Блокнот» появился гораздо раньше WordPad — в далеком 1983 году. В 1985 его добавили в релизную версию Windows 1.0. И с тех пор его возможности практически не менялись — несколько функций добавили только с выходом Windows 11.
Лед тронулся в начале 2024 года. Чтобы ответить на требования пользователей, разработчики из Microsoft стали постепенно добавлять в «Блокнот» новые возможности. В нем, например, появился счетчик символов, которого никогда не было, и функция автосохранения, позволяющая не потерять информацию, если что-то пошло не так.
Начиная с марта разработчики тестировали функцию проверки правописания. И несколько дней назад новая версия «Блокнота» стала доступной для всех пользователей Windows 11.
Проверка правописания ничем не отличается от той же функции в Word. Слова с ошибками подчеркиваются красным. Вызвав контекстное меню правой кнопкой мыши, можно добавлять новые слова в пользовательский словарь, заменять слова и т. п. Еще появилась возможность автоматической замены.
Странно, что Microsoft ждала 40 лет, прежде чем добавить все это в «Блокнот». Проапгрейдить текстовый редактор можно было гораздо раньше — начиная с 1985 года. Именно тогда впервые и появилась функция проверки правописания. В то время она была известна как Multi‑Tool Word для Xenix и MS‑DOS.
В новом «Блокноте» можно включить или отключить проверку орфографии для каждого типа файла для Windows 11. Если вы не хотите видеть исправления в таких файлах, как.md,.srt,.lrc или.lic, их можно убрать в настройках. Проверка орфографии также автоматически отключается в файлах журналов и других типах файлов, связанных с кодированием. Microsoft добавила автозамену в «Блокнот», так что опечатки исправляются при включенной проверке орфографии.
У редактора появились и другие функции, включая возможность изменения тем, вкладки, интеграцию с Copilot.
Вернут ли WordPad?
Вопрос вовсе не праздный. Несмотря на обновления «Блокнота», многие пользователи Windows все же хотят вернуть привычный WordPad. Дело в том, что в «Блокноте» можно лишь набирать текст — без форматирования, таблиц и изображений. А вот WordPad позволял все это делать.

Пожалуйста, добавьте WordPad в Microsoft Store, как вы это сделали с MS Paint, когда он был объявлен устаревшим в Windows», — говорится в комментарии одного из пользователей, оставленном в «Центре обратной связи» Microsoft.
«Я часто применяю RTF для простых документов, потому что они не тяжелые. Буквально вчера я использовал WordPad, чтобы составить и записать список действий для выполнения рабочей задачи на сервере. Представители Microsoft отказались возвращать приложение в состав ОС Windows, так что надежды уже нет.
«Блокноту» многие пользователи предпочитают другие текстовые редакторы, включая, например, бесплатный NotePad++. Он в разы более функциональный, с ним работают и обычные юзеры, и программисты. Есть, например, подсветка синтаксиса, не говоря уже о большом количестве других возможностей: поиск по файлам в папке или разных каталогах, автозамена в разных файлах, изменение кодировки и т. п.
