Hello, thanks for posting to the message board.
I pulled the logon.scr file from two Windows XP installations, one 32-bit and the other 64-bit. You can download them from here if you like. The logon_xp_64 screensaver works for me on Windows 10 64-bit, the logon_xp_32 screensaver does not.
The specific version of Windows, in this case «Professional», is included in the logo, so it may not be as generic as you’d like to see it, but hopefully this helps!
That random screensaver picker looks pretty good, I’ll probably add it to the site soon.
Thanks again!

Change The Windows Logon Screensaver And More (Win XP)
Have you ever wanted to personalize your Windows XP logon screensaver to give it a unique touch? Well, you’re in luck because in this article, we will show you how to change the Windows logon screensaver and more on your Windows XP operating system. Windows XP may be an old operating system, but it still has a dedicated user base, and many people still use it on their older computers.
The logon screensaver is the image or animation that appears on your computer screen when you first start up your Windows XP operating system. It’s a great way to add a personal touch to your computer and make it feel like your own. Changing the logon screensaver is a simple process that can be done in just a few minutes, and we will walk you through the steps to do it.
Step 1: Accessing the Windows Logon Screensaver
To change the logon screensaver on your Windows XP operating system, you first need to access the logon screensaver settings. Here’s how you can do it:
- Click on the «Start» button on the bottom left corner of your screen.
- Click on «Control Panel» in the Start menu.
- In the Control Panel window, double-click on the «Display» icon.
- In the Display Properties window, click on the «Screen Saver» tab at the top of the window.
You should now see the screen saver settings window, where you can select and customize your logon screensaver.
Step 2: Selecting a New Logon Screensaver
In the screen saver settings window, you will see a drop-down menu under the «Screen saver» heading. This is where you can select a new screensaver for your logon screen. Windows XP comes with a few built-in screensavers, such as «3D Text» and «Mystify,» but you can also download and install new screensavers from the internet.
To select a new logon screensaver, follow these steps:
- Click on the drop-down menu under the «Screen Saver» heading.
- Scroll through the list of screensavers and select the one you want to use for your logon screen.
- You can also click on the «Settings» button next to the drop-down menu to customize the settings of the selected screensaver.
Once you have selected a new logon screensaver and customized its settings, click on the «Apply» button at the bottom of the window to save your changes.
Step 3: Previewing Your New Logon Screensaver
Before you apply the new logon screensaver, it’s a good idea to preview it to see how it will look on your logon screen. To preview your new logon screensaver, follow these steps:
- Click on the «Preview» button at the bottom of the screen saver settings window.
- The selected screensaver will start playing on your screen, giving you a preview of how it will look on your logon screen.
- You can click on the «Settings» button to customize the screensaver settings further.
Once you are satisfied with the new logon screensaver, click on the «OK» button to apply it to your logon screen.
Step 4: Changing Other Logon Screen Settings
In addition to changing the logon screensaver, you can also customize other logon screen settings on your Windows XP operating system. For example, you can change the background color of the logon screen, add a custom message, or display the last user who logged in.
To change other logon screen settings, follow these steps:
- In the screen saver settings window, click on the «Background» tab at the top of the window.
- Here, you can select a background color for your logon screen or choose a custom image to use as the background.
- You can also click on the «Advanced» button to further customize the logon screen settings, such as displaying the last user who logged in or adding a custom message.
Once you have made the desired changes to the logon screen settings, click on the «Apply» button to save your changes.
Step 5: Logging Out and Viewing the New Logon Screensaver
To view the new logon screensaver that you have set up on your Windows XP operating system, you will need to log out of your account and return to the logon screen. Here’s how you can do it:
- Click on the «Start» button on the bottom left corner of your screen.
- Click on the «Log Off» button in the Start menu.
- You will be taken back to the logon screen, where you can see the new logon screensaver that you have set up.
Congratulations! You have successfully changed the logon screensaver on your Windows XP operating system and customized it to your liking. Personalizing your logon screen is a great way to make your computer feel more like your own and give it a unique touch.

By following the steps outlined in this article, you can select a new logon screensaver, customize its settings, and personalize your logon screen to make it your own. So go ahead and give it a try – you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to change the logon screensaver and more on your Windows XP computer.
The graphic(s) displayed in each version of logon.scr. From left to right: Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP (Professional Edition), Windows Vista (featuring both possible graphics).
Windows Logo (formerly named Windows XP and Logon Screen Saver in Windows XP and Windows 2000 respectively) is a screen saver included with several versions of Microsoft Windows. It was first introduced in Windows NT 4.0 and comes with every subsequent version of Microsoft Windows up to Windows Vista. The screen saver’s file name is «logon.scr».
As the screen saver’s file name «logon» indicates, it was the default screen saver set to play when the computer was idle while the logon screen was shown.
Description[]
In Windows Vista, the Windows Logo screen saver displays one of two graphics at a time, on a random position of the screen: the Windows logo and the Windows Vista «aurora» streak (which glistens when it appears). The screen saver begins with a black screen for five seconds. After this, the graphic fades in at a random position of the screen, persists for one second, then fades out. The screen remains blank for two seconds before the next graphic appears. There is no fixed order for which graphic appears.
In Windows 2000 and XP, the logo of the respective Windows version appears at a random position of the screen. It persists for ten seconds, then moves to another position of the screen. This cycle repeats indefinitely. In Windows XP, the subtitle beneath the logo depends on the edition in use.
In Windows NT 4.0, a graphic identical to the Begin Logon dialog box from the logon screen appears at a random position of the screen. It persists for ten seconds, then moves to another position of the screen. After seven seconds of each appearance, the icon depicting a hand over a keyboard briefly animates.
There are no options that can be set for any version of this screen saver.
Notes[]
- If the Windows Vista version of the Windows Logo screen saver is imported into Windows 7, the screen saver shows a unique graphic for the Windows 7 logo instead of the Windows Vista logo. This indicates that the image used by the screen saver is stored in the Windows operating system, rather than the screen saver file itself.
- The fact the image was changed in Windows 7 implies that Windows Logo was intended to be included with the operating system.
- If the Windows Logo screen saver is imported into any version of Windows later than Windows 7, no Windows logo will be displayed; the screen saver will only show the Windows Vista aurora streak.
Sign in to your MUO account
All of the Windows operating systems seem to allow an extreme amount of customization and change based on user desires. Today, we will talk about a small part of that — tweaking the Windows logon/boot.
Well, ready to get started? Let’s do it.
Messing around with the actual login can be quite fun as well. Actually, if that does not pump you up enough, what if I told you it was easy? Yes, well, it is! Here are a few cool things you can do with the registry to make your login screen a little more personal:
Add A Login Text Reminder
This little reminder will pop-up everytime you start the computer, right before the login screen boots. You can edit it to say whatever you like.
1. Go to «Start,» «Run,» and type regedit.ext.2. When the Registry Editor loads, navigate toHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Current Version \ Winlogon3. You should now see a multitude of registry keys that are essential for the logon. To do what we are trying to do, add a text reminder, find the registry key LegalNoticeCaption and right-click, and select Modify.4. Now, type whatever you like in the box to set a caption/title for the window.5. For the actual text you would like to display, find the Registry Key right under it titled LegalNoticeText and again right-click it, then select Modify. Type whatever you like in the box.
Set Default Logon Identity
Also conveniently placed in the Winlogon directory is the Registry Key titled AutoAdminLogin, DefaultDomainName, and DefaultUserName. These keys set the default login credentials for the system when the login is loaded. If you simply want to save time by automatically setting the correct username and password everytime, and this computer is not used by a bunch of people then it is fine.
If the computer you are tweaking happens to be used by many people then I would not recommend using this tweak, unless, of course, you are intending on everyone using the same account. Anyway here it is:
1. Go to «Start,» «Run,» and type regedit.exe.2. When the Registry Editor loads, navigate toHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Current Version \ Winlogon3. The AutoAdminLogin key should be set to 0 currently if your system does not automatically log you on. If the system does, though, automatically log you on, then this should be set to 1.4. The DefaultDomainName key is the default user directory the username is selected to do. Usually, this will not need to be changed, unless you are logging onto a server.5. The DefaultUserName key, obviously, sets the default username. You can change this to whatever you wish to accompany your username.
Change the Logon Screensaver
Changing the logon screensaver may be the best part. The ability to show your friends your ultra-cool hacking tweaking skills and superior computer modding. Anyway, here is an easy way using some cool software. (Note: The installation is quite easy and shouldn’t need much explanation.)
1. Download BootSkin.2. Find and download new or used current «BootSkins» provided after installation to change your boot screen. (To download and access new «BootSkins» you can go to WinCustomize.)
Hope these small tweaks help you get a little closer to the perfect computer. Have fun tweaking!
