Обратите внимание! В Windows 10 есть две папки «Temp», в одной из них хранятся системные файлы, в другой – пользовательские (те, что были сгенерированы сторонними приложениями). Далее в статье речь пойдет о том, где находится каждая из них, и как ее открыть.
Вариант 1: Системная папка
Директория с временными файлами операционной системы находится по указанному ниже пути:
C:\Windows\Temp

Вариант 2: Пользовательская папка
Директория, в которой хранятся временные файлы установленных пользователем приложений, имеет следующий адрес:
C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Temp

Обратите внимание! Директория «Default», как и все ее содержимое, по умолчанию является скрытой, поэтому для самостоятельного перехода в нее потребуется предварительно активировать отображение скрытых файлов и папок в системе. Открытие папки «Temp»
Несмотря на то что абсолютное большинство пользователей для работы с файлами и папками привыкло использовать встроенный в систему «Проводник», перейти к любому интересующему расположению можно не только с его помощью, но рассмотрение доступных вариантов мы начнем именно с данного решения.
Способ 1: «Проводник»
Для того чтобы попасть в искомую директорию посредством стандартного для ОС файлового менеджера,
просто скопируйте одно из указанных выше расположений, вставьте его в адресную строку и нажмите на клавишу «Enter» или расположенную справа стрелку.

Способ 2: «Выполнить»
Обычно оснастка «Выполнить» используется для быстрого запуска различных системных приложений и утилит, но с ее помощью также можно быстро переходить в нужные папки.
Воспользуйтесь сочетанием «Win+R» для быстрого вызова рассматриваемого средства и вставьте в поле для ввода интересующее вас расположение папки «Temp». Нажмите «ОК» или «Enter» для перехода к ней.

Способ 3: «Поиск»
Стандартную для «десятки» функцию поиска можно использовать не только по ее прямому назначению, но и для того, чтобы быстро переходить к тому или иному расположению в «Проводнике».
Кликните по значку поиска на панели задач или воспользуйтесь клавишами «Win+S», вставьте интересующий вас адрес папки «Temp». Кликните по нему в результатах выдачи для открытия.
Способ 4: Сторонние файловые менеджеры
Файловые менеджеры от сторонних разработчиков не взыскали особой популярности среди рядовых пользователей, оставшись, скорее, уделом энтузиастов. Но раз уж такого рода программное обеспечение предоставляет возможность решения нашей задачи, его тоже стоит рассмотреть.
Алгоритм использования в данном случае ничем не отличается от уже упомянутого нами выше «Проводника» — достаточно скопировать расположение папки «Temp», вставить его в адресную строку и нажать «Enter» для перехода. Это же можно сделать и вручную, последовательно открывая каждую директорию.
В качестве примера мы задействовали некогда популярный Total Commander, но это далеко не единственный представитель данного сегмента ПО.

Способ 5: Браузер
Абсолютно любой современный браузер позволяет осуществлять навигацию по директориям и взаимодействовать с файлами, например, для их просмотра или загрузки в интернет. В случае с системными данными, коими являются обе папки «Temp» и их содержимое, такую возможность вряд ли можно назвать целесообразной, но как еще один метод решения нашей задачи она заслуживает рассмотрения.
Скопируйте интересующий вас путь, вставьте его в адресную строку браузера и нажмите на клавишу «Enter» для перехода.
Перед вами незамедлительно будет открыт список папок и файлов практически в том же виде, что в «Проводнике» и любых других файловых менеджерах, правда, без каких-либо дополнительных функций – доступна только навигация по каталогам и возможность открытия поддерживаемых форматов (мультимедиа, документов и т. д.).
Обратите внимание! Браузер отображает скрытые файлы и папки всегда, даже если это деактивировано в настройках системы. Поэтому, взаимодействуя с ними, будьте предельно внимательны и осторожны – не удаляйте, не перемещайте и не переименовывайте ничего, если не имеете представления о возможных последствиях.
Очистка папки «Temp»
Зачастую задача открытия папки «Temp» напрямую связана с необходимостью удаления временных файлов, которые скапливаются в ней в процессе работы операционной системы и использования различного программного обеспечения и со временем начинают занимать ощутимое место на диске. In computing, a temporary folder or temporary directory is a directory used to hold temporary files. Many operating systems and some software automatically delete the contents of this directory at bootup or at regular intervals, leaving the directory itself intact.
For security reasons, it is best for each user to have their own temporary directory, since there has been a history of security vulnerabilities with temporary files due to programs incorrect file permissions or race conditions.
A standard procedure for system administration is to reduce the amount of storage space used (typically, on a disk drive) by removing temporary files. In multi-user systems, this can potentially remove active files, disrupting users’ activities. To avoid this, some space-reclaiming procedures remove only files which are inactive or «old» — those which have not been read or modified in several days.
In Unix, the /tmp directory will often be a separate disk partition. In systems with magnetic hard disk drives, performance (overall system IOPS) will increase if disk-head movements from regular disk I/O are separated from the access to the temporary directory. Increasingly, memory-based solutions for the temporary directory or folder are being used, such as «RAM disks» set up in random-access memory or the shared-memory device /dev/shm in Linux.
A Flash-based solid-state drive is less suitable as a temporary-storage device for reading and writing due to the asymmetric read/write duration and due to wear. (See wear leveling.)
Traditional locations

In MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows, the temporary directory is set by the environment variable TEMP or TMP.[1] Using the Window API, one can find the path to the temporary directory using the GetTempPath2 function,[2] or one can obtain a path to a uniquely-named temporary file using the GetTempFileName function.[3] Originally, the default was C:\Temp, then %WinDir%\Temp. In the Windows XP era, the temporary directory was set per-user as Local Settings\Temp, although still user-relocatable. For Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10 the temp location has moved again to within the AppData section of the User Profile, typically C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Local\Temp (%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp). In all versions of Windows, the Temp location can be accessed, for example, in Explorer, «Run…» boxes and in an application’s internal code by using %TMP% or %TEMP%. As with other environmental variables, %TMP% or %TEMP% is synonymous with the full path.
In Unix and Linux, the global temporary directories are /tmp and /var/tmp. Web browsers periodically write data to the tmp directory during page views and downloads. Typically, /var/tmp is for persistent files (as it may be preserved over reboots), and /tmp is for more temporary files. See Filesystem Hierarchy Standard.[4][5] In addition, a user can set their TMPDIR environment variable to point to a preferred directory (where the creation and modification of files is allowed).
In macOS, a sandboxed application cannot use the standard Unix locations, but may use a user-specific directory whose path is provided by the function NSTemporaryDirectory.[6]
In OpenVMS, SYS$SCRATCH[7] and in AmigaDOS T: are used.

When you install a software in your computer, it uses Temp folder to install the software. Sometimes system denies installation due to lack of enough rights to Temp folder. In such cases, we can change the location of Temp folder easily. Temp folder stores temporary internet files, setup files, windows explorer files & history and program files that are of no use.
This step by step guide will help you to change your existing Temp folder location to new a Temp location. This example is given on Win-7 operating system.
Temp folder resides in following location in Win-7 Operating System.
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp
Step-1:
First create a Folder in your D:\ Drive >> D:\TEMP then
Go to START menu >> Choose RUN and type sysdm.cpl to start System Properties.
OR
Right click on My Computer and click on Properties >> Click on Advance System Settings under the left side of panel.
Step-2:
Now click on Advanced Tab under System Properties dialog box >> Click on Environment Variables button.
Step-3:
Double click on User variable named TEMP and change it to a path on your D:\ drive.
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp to D:\Temp
Now double click on User variable named TMP and change it to a path on your D:\ drive.
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp to D:\Temp
Step-4:
Finally click on OK button to change the location of Temp folder permanently.
Step-5:
You need not to restart the PC but if it doesn’t work, you may restart the PC to make the changes permanent.
By this way you can change Temp Folder Location- %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp to new loaction.

We have already seen the nature of some temporary files like Temporary Internet Files, Index.dat file, Cookies, and Prefetch Files. In this article, we shall have a look at a few aspects of the Windows Temporary Files, which your computer creates, during the course of its normal running.
What are Temporary Files in Windows 11/10
Temporary Files in Windows are those junk files whose use is only temporary and become redundant once the task in hand is completed. Such temporary files are created to hold data temporarily while a file is being created or processed or used.
Why are Temporary Files created
Windows Temporary files are created by the operating system during normal operation when there is not enough memory allocated for the task.
Software that uses large amounts of data, such as Graphics, Video, or Media editing software, also creates temporary files. These temporary files are often left behind even when the task is over, wasting disk space.
Temporary Files are also created for backup purposes, by programs. For instance, Microsoft Office saves a Temporary File of the open document every few minutes. If you save the document and exit, the Temporary File gets deleted. If the program crashes unexpectedly, the Temporary File is not deleted. They can thus be useful to help recover lost data if the program or the system crashes.
Ideally, the Temporary Files should get deleted once the program exits. But this is not always the case, leading to wasted disk space.
Temporary Files Location in Windows
The Temporary Files in Windows are typically found located in two locations – but they can be found elsewhere too:
- %systemdrive%\Windows\Temp
- %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp
If you click on C:\Windows\Temp you will receive a message You don’t currently have permission to access this folder. Click on Continue to do so. You will see that most of its contents are .tmp, .temp and .txt files.
The other folder typically located at C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp, is created for each User. It’s a hidden folder and you will have to first ‘un-hide’ System folders from the Folder Options before you can see it.
The Temporary files created by the Windows operating system are usually stored in the %system%\Windows\Temp folder, whereas the ones created by the User when running any software is stored in his user profile at %userprofiles%\AppData\Local\.
Temporary Files of a particular software may also be located in a sub-folder, inside the parent folder of the particular software.
On rare occasions, a temporary file or a temporary files folder may get created into the root directory of the C (System) drive. You may want to examine the folder in details, and then delete it if you are sure, if it indeed contains temporary files.
Change the location of the Temp folder in Windows
If you wish, you can change the location of the Temporary Files folder. To do so, open System Properties via the Control Panel > Environment Variables > Edit the System and/or the User variables as you wish.
But do remember that it is never a good idea to combine the temporary directories together for all the user profiles, for security reasons, since there have been cases of security vulnerabilities with temporary files, due to a particular software’s incorrect file permissions or race conditions.
Empty Temporary Files folder in Windows
There are several different ways to delete Temporary Files. You can use freeware junk file cleaners or the in-built Disk Cleanup utility to easily empty the contents of the Temp folders.

If you are running out of space in your system disk, then an easy solution to allocate free space, is to clear (delete) temporary files that were created from Windows services or programs installed on your computer. The cleaning procedure of these files is a safety operation and you don’t lose any critical files that are needed from your system to operate normally.
Windows uses (minimum) two temporary folders to store all temporary files created by computer usage: The system temporary folder: “C:\Windows\Temp” (that stores all System temporary files) and the user temporary folder that stores temporary files from each user. The user temporary folder is created inside each user’s profile and the full path depends from the operating system installed on the computer:
For Windows 8,7, VIsta OS the user temporary folder path is: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp

For Windows XP the user temporary folder path is: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
Moving the Temporary folder to another location helps you easily find and delete all your temporary files (from inside Temporary folder) and maximize your system disk’s free space. This procedure works better in the case of the existence of a second hard drive on your system.
In this article I’ll show you the way to move the temporary store folders to another disk location.
Step 1: Create a new folder for Temp files:
1. Open Windows explorer and create a new folder at the location that you prefer your temporary files to be stored.
(e.g. “C:\TEMP” or “D:\TEMP” if you have a secondary hard disk).
Step 2: Open Environment Variables settings.
To do this:
1. Right click on the Computer icon and select Properties.
2. Click in Advanced system settings on the left pane.
3. Ask “Yes” on the “UAC Warning” message.
4. Inside Advanced settings click on “Environment Variables”
5. Inside Environment Variables you see two sections:
a. User variables for the current user (e.g. Admin)
b. System variables
From here you’ll be able to change the default location for temporary files.
Step 3. Change Environment Variables values.
A. To change current user’s temp files store location:
1. Go inside “User variables” section select the “TEMP” variable and press “Edit”.
2. In “Variable Value” box delete the default TEMP location (%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp) and then type the new TEMP folder location (e.g. C:\TEMP). Press “OK” when finished.
3. Repeat the same procedure for the “TMP” variable.
After you have finished, the “User variables” section should be like this:
5. Press “OK” twice and restart your computer for changes to take effect if you don’t want to change System’s Temp store location.
B. To change System’s temp files store location:
1. Go inside “System variables” section and scroll down until you find “TEMP” & “TMP” variables.
2. Select the “TEMP” variable and press “Edit”.
3. In “Variable Value” box delete the default TEMP location (%SystemRoot%\TEMP) and then type the new SYSTEM TEMP folder location. (e.g. C:\TEMP). Press “OK” when finished.
4. Repeat the same procedure for the “TMP” variable.
After you have finished, the “User variables” section should be like this:
5. Press “OK” twice and restart your computer for changes to take effect.
From now on, you can easily find and safely delete all the contents inside your new TEMP folder and allocate disk space.
