When you’re installing or using a new application on your Windows 10 computer, you might want to know what rights do power users have. Power users can install programs without changing the core operating system files. They can even install programs and start system maintenance services without requiring admin permissions. However, these users can’t do much more than other low-level users. As the administrator, your primary role is to perform system maintenance and administration.

When you create or join a group on Windows 10, you’ll see a variety of accounts with varying privileges. Although many are similar, Power Users are a notch below Administrators. This account type allows them to install programs and share resources. Other accounts, such as Administrators, are more useful in large networks or authenticating on a domain. These groups are based on the level of access you need to perform specific tasks.

To create a new Power User, open Control Panel and click on System and Security. Under System, choose Remote Desktop, and then click on the Allow remote access option. You’ll be able to see which users have admin rights and which don’t. Once you’ve defined the appropriate groups, you’ll need to assign the new users to them. You can also grant a Power User to another user group, such as a standard user account.

What Permissions Does a Power User Have?

What rights does a power user have on Windows 10? Power users are a group of operating system users with greater privileges than regular users. They have administrative rights and can create and change local user accounts. They can also share system resources with other users. Although Power Users have more privileges than standard users, they still have some limitations. In Windows 10, Power Users can perform most of the same tasks as Administrators, and they also have more permissions to make changes to the system.

A Power User can install and remove software. They can modify power settings, change time zone settings, install ActiveX controls, and replace or modify Windows’ core OS file. What Can a Power User Do in Windows?

If you are a Windows power user, you can take control of the computer’s settings by using the Power User menu. This menu is available by right-clicking on the start menu, or you can use the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + X. Once you have accessed this menu, you’ll see a list of options. Select the ones you want to change or modify, and press the corresponding button.

The Power User role is a group of users in the operating system with extra permissions. They can create local user accounts, modify existing user accounts, and share system resources with other users. Although they have more administrative rights than the normal user, they are still limited to some operations. A power user is a user of computers, software and other electronic devices who uses advanced features of computer hardware,[1][2][3] operating systems,[4] programs, or websites[5] which are not used by the average user. A power user might not have extensive technical knowledge of the systems they use[6] but is rather characterized by competence or desire to make the most intensive use of computer programs or systems.

The term came into use in the 1980s, as advocates for computing developed special skills for working with or customizing existing hardware and software. Power users knew the best ways to perform common tasks and find advanced information before the arrival of the commercial Internet. On PC platforms, power users read magazines like Byte or PC Magazine, and knew enough about operating systems to create and edit batch files, write short programs in BASIC, and adjust system settings. They tended to customize or “supercharge” existing systems, rather than create new software.[7]

In enterprise software systems, «Power User» may be a formal role given to an individual who is not a programmer but a specialist in business software. Often these people retain their normal user job role but also function in testing, training, and first-tier support of the enterprise software.[6][8]

Some software applications are regarded as particularly suited for power users and may be designed as such. Examples include VLC media player, a multimedia framework, a player, and a server, which includes complex features not found in other media player suites.[9][10]

Interface design issues

User testing for software often focuses on awe or regular users.[11] Power users can require different user interface elements compared to regular and minimal users, as they may need less help and fewer cues. A power user might use a program full-time, compared to a casual or occasional user. Thus a program which caters to power users will typically include features that make the interface easier for experts to use, even if these features might be mystifying to beginners.

A typical example is extensive keybindings, like Ctrl+F or Alt+Enter; having keyboard bindings and shortcuts for many functions is a hallmark of power-user centric software design, as it enables users who put forth more effort to learn the shortcuts to operate the program quickly without removing their hands from the keyboard.

Power users typically want to operate the software with little interaction, or as fast as possible, and be able to perform tasks in a precise, exactly-reproducible way, whereas casual users may be happy if the program can be intuitively made to do approximately what they wanted. To aid in the automation of repetitive tasks during heavy usage, power-user centric interfaces often provide the ability to compose macros, and program functions may be pre-conceived to with the intention that they will be used programmatically in scripting.

Power users vs. minimalists

Interface design may have to make trade-offs between confusing beginners and minimalists versus the elaborate needs of experts and power users. These concerns may overlap partially with the blinking twelve problem, in which a complex user interface causes users to avoid certain features. It may be extremely difficult to both appeal to new users, who want user interfaces to be intuitive, and experts, who want power and flexibility.

However, there are solutions for these problems, such as:

  • Product variations
  • Operation modes
  • More advanced features, options and settings logically separated in sub-menus.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts, to hide complex functionality from a user interface, yet still maintain user potential (if the shortcut is known).

Users may also erroneously label themselves as power users when they are less than fully competent,[12] further complicating the requirements of designing software which caters to the desires and needs of those users.

Simplicity vs. efficiency

A simple intuitive interface often increases the technical complexity of a program and impedes its efficient use, while a well-designed but complex-seeming interface may increase efficiency by making many advanced features quickly accessible to experts. For example, a program with many advanced keyboard shortcuts may seem to be needlessly complex, but experienced power users may find it easier and quicker to avoid long sequences of mouse clicks to navigate menus and popups. Such menus and popups may exist to intuitively guide new users along a desired course of action, but they are often overly-simplistic by design so that novices might easily grasp the required steps. Providing both interfaces simultaneously is an option but requires greatly extended development time, so trade-offs are often made.

SAP and Oracle are enterprise systems that require a complex set of training to gain professional certification. Because of this, and also to encourage engagement with the systems, many companies have created a «Super User Model» (also called Power User, Champion) to take regular users and raise them to a level of leadership within the system. Doing this accomplishes three objectives:[6][8]

  1. More engaged use of the system as there is a personal face assigned to champion the system and make acceptance of the technology less challenging.
  2. A significant time and cost reduction as companies are not seeking or hiring new or temporary resources for the purposes of developing and/or delivering documentation, training, and support.
  3. ROI or proof of concept of the SAP investment should be more easily achieved as users are directly involved, thereby using the system invested in, which benefits the company overall.

Extensive research has been done with the Super User Model in SAP, specifically in regard to the role they take in training and supporting end users. Currently, more than 70% of SAP companies utilize a form of the Super User Model.

Windows administration

In Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, and Windows Server 2003, there is a «Power Users» group on the system that gives more permissions than a normal restricted user, but stops short of Administrator permissions. If a user is a member of the Power Users group, they have a greater chance of exposing the system to malware over a normal user and can promote their account to an Administrator by purposely installing malware.[13] Thus, the Power Users group should be used with trustworthy and knowledgeable users only; it is not suitable to contain untrustworthy users. The Power Users group was made obsolete in Windows Vista as part of the consolidation of privilege elevation features in the introduction of User Account Control.[14] In Windows Vista Business l or higher, you can still create a «power user» via local users and groups, but there is no difference from a standard user because all the ACL entries of the file system are completely removed.

зато из-под power user’а работают многие проги не работаюшие из под обычного юзера.

Однако (сам проверял в Windows XP SP2 с дефолтными настройками) среди %windir%\* Power User может снести примерно половину файлов, почти всё из Program Files (даже что админ ставил, включая антивирус AVG, WMP, Winamp, Firefox, Adobe Reader, OOo, Skype, GIMP).

И ведь надо ещё дождаться, чтобы кто-то после этого зашёл под админом. :)

Но похоже скорее Power User существует для перестраховки админа от собственной неосторожности ;) (а это уже немало ;)

И к тому же, раз Power User может ставить софт, то он же его и может сносить, логично? К тому же в system32 он все таки не имеет прав записи (если конечно какой кривой инсталлер какой кривой проги не запихал туда файл с кривым правами), а непосредственно в %windir% мало что ценного.

Да собственно всё правда, я только что проапгрейдил Power User до Administrator. :) Неплохо бы ещё это сделать так, чтобы администратору не надо было логиниться после этого.

PowerUser может писать куда угодно и что угодно через сервис MSI (Microsoft Installer), который запускается из под Local Service аккаунта.

А линукс как управляет питанием если нет специальной группы? У меня такой группы нет, но когда питание на корпусе нажимаю — он выключается. А в виндосе когда нажимаю — ничего не происходит.

Наверно надо завести такую группу, как в правильной системе. А то вдруг кто случайно питание нажимать начнет.

Я плакаль и рыдаль. Хацкири. То что в HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run запускаеццо при входе в систему с правами входящего пользователя. А вот в HKLM\System, где сервисы — туда для Power Users как раз запись запрещена.

Ron, ты совсем тупой что ли? Из-под Power User записываешь в HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run «net localgroup administrators POWER_USER_NAME /add», потом просишь администратора, чтобы он вошёл в систему.

One of the most appealing aspects of software-as-a-service (SaaS) is that it’s easier to manage than an on-premise solution. But SaaS isn’t totally hands-off. As SaaS adoption grows, so does your technology spend. Administrators must act strategically to control costs and manage performance.

That means admins need to have a better idea of who their power users are. They need to work closely with users to understand how well an application performs, which they can use to drive negotiations and renewal decisions. And they need to partner with finance to ensure they have an accurate picture of software spending.

Here’s an overview of the typical roles and responsibilities of SaaS users, and how administrators can gain a strategic advantage by working with them.

Power users vs. administrators: Know your user base

What separates a power user from an administrator? While one person may occupy both roles, the responsibilities and key concerns of each function vary widely.

Administrator

An administrator, or admin, is a designated point person for a particular application. Admins often work in the IT department, and some companies even have a dedicated SaaS administrator or manager. This person is fully dedicated to managing the company’s SaaS subscriptions.

Other companies take a more decentralized approach. The admin may be a department manager or a member of an ops team. In smaller organizations, the admin may be an individual contributor who is also a power user.

Admins understand what an application does, how costs are structured, and its core value for the organization or department. Their typical duties include the following:

  • Implementation, including setup and integrations
  • Managing user access and permissions
  • Monitoring system performance
  • Managing security features and updates
  • Working with vendors to resolve service issues
  • Paying and processing invoices

Admins are also responsible for managing renewals and negotiating costs, a challenge that’s grown increasingly difficult. There are countless SaaS applications available for almost every need, and SaaS spending is quickly becoming one of the largest expenses for many companies. Admins must be proactive to keep spending in check.

Power users

Power users are specialists who spend a significant portion of their time in an application. They log in at least weekly, if not daily. They know the features inside and out, and may even be more knowledgeable than the admin.

Unlike admins, the budget is not one of their concerns. For power users, the main concern is whether an application helps them perform their job. They tend to be internal champions for using an application, and when there’s an issue, they’re more likely to speak up about it.

Power users are typically accountable for the following:

  • Ensuring the accuracy and integrity of data entered into the application
  • Supporting colleagues with software issues
  • Participating in testing and onboarding
  • Building customizations and workflows to make the application work better for users

Power users can also fill a gap between IT, the software vendor, and the rest of the user base. Because of their specialized technical knowledge and understanding of how users interact with an application, they have a unique perspective.

In addition to power users and admins, standard and inactive users round out the typical user base.

Standard users

Standard users typically don’t rely on an application as their primary tool, but they still use it regularly. For example, they may use it to view weekly reports or log tasks at the end of the month. Depending on their needs, they might only have read-only access or strict limits on what information they can enter into the system.

Standard users’ main concern is whether an application allows them to complete specific tasks. They may be unlikely to raise a fuss if an application isn’t working, since it’s not essential to their core job function. Instead of speaking up, they may simply work outside the system.

Inactive users

Inactive users haven’t logged into an application for an extended period of time. They may be inactive because they didn’t know they had access to the software or didn’t need it in the first place. They also may have moved to a different role or left the company.

Many inactive users are zombie accounts. Zombie accounts are a common source of SaaS overspend since the company is paying for unused software licenses. They can also pose a cybersecurity threat.

How admins can work with users to be more strategic

Because admins are responsible for overall application performance, it’s up to them to address the risk posed by zombie accounts and users working outside the system. To do that, it’s important to take a more strategic, proactive approach to SaaS management:

  • Understand who your power users, standard users, and inactive users are by consistently conducting audits of the user base.
  • Regularly talk with all users about how well the application is working. This is a good opportunity to learn about any workarounds that users may have created.
  • Remove inactive and zombie users to prevent overspending and mitigate cybersecurity risk.

Work closely with power users

When it comes to making more strategic decisions about a SaaS application, power users can be an admin’s best friend. This is especially important when admins and users are in different departments. The admin may know what an application is supposed to do, but the power users know how it’s actually performing.

Power users are in the application all day. They know when integrations are working and when they aren’t. They can contribute ideas about potential improvements. These users can also provide insights on whether they’re using all of the features that you’re paying for, or if an application is right for their needs in the first place.

With this information, admins can enter negotiations with better information. They can implement changes that make the application work better for all users and can hone in on ways to cut costs.

Make finance a strategic partner

With SaaS taking up a growing share of the budget, finance plays a bigger role in holding admins accountable for controlling their spend. As admins take a more strategic approach to managing spending and app usage, they can work together with finance to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.

  • Demonstrate the need for spending, based on feedback from users.
  • Give finance a heads-up on usage before renewals, so they can be prepared for negotiations and advise on budget limitations.
  • Better understand the company’s cash flow, which is especially important for subscription-based purchases.

Admins can also provide finance with the data they need for better forecasting and planning.
