Windows could not display the images available for installation

Hi

I am a newbie at using WDS (and no experience in using RIS as well) and I have a rack of old servers to deploy W2k3R2SP2DC edition to. The rack consists of a HP DL380 with an optical drive, and the rest of the servers are HP DL140 with no optical drive. Right now, I have installed OS on DL380, but the other servers still have Linux on them and I would like to wipe them out.

To cut the long story short, I used the DL380 as my reference computer, and set up a virtual machine on my laptop running W2k3Enterprise. On the virtual machine is WDS, AD, DNS and DHCP, and I am using it as the WDS server.

Capturing of the image on DL380 seemed successful, and I moved on to the Deployment walkthrough (http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=264&hl=).

After creating the deploy.wim and booting to PXE on the same DL380, I was able to see the Install Windows (on Windows PE? still a little confused on what WinPE actually is) screens.

I was able to login to the domain and select my image, but alas, ‘Windows could not display the images available for installation’.

Note that this is the same machine which I had previously captured the OS from, so hardware issues shouldn’t be causing this?

My questions are:

Does WDS even support W2k3DC edition images?

Also, will there I able to deploy images to servers of different hardware? If not, any suggestions on how I might go about doing the installation of OS on the DL140s as I don’t have any ready images for deployment?

Sorry if my questions sound really fundamental but I have really limited experience in image deployments, having never used WDS/RIS before.

Cheers

In Pro not but 2 versions. If you use my right click .wim in my sig you see this in Details for image. That is why it is easier to use

As I said I think maybe they blacklisted the generic key but if you use your correct key it will work. I fixed your xml and it is same as mine and I have installed to VM 50 or more times messing with modding dll’s and it doesn’t hang up but installs.

I asked for your setupact.log. This will tell us what is wrong.

It contains nothing I or any one else can use. Totally generic and hides sensitive information. Like when it loads key it say loaded to blackboard.

I modified explanation of my Panther.cmd over here

  1. Windows could not display the images available for installation

Dear Friends,Recently I had captured the windows image file from Windows 11 pro with the help of dism command. The Windows 11 pro image was captured successful. I copied custom wim and paste inside the ISO source location with “install.wim”Secondly, I used the “oscdimg” command to prepare the bootable iso file. but once I booted the VM with custom Windows 11 iso file, VM was booting successfully once i click on “Install” then I received error message “Windows could not display the images available for installation custom WIM” due to this reason i can’t move forward.

  3. no images are available…win 10 install

    Hi Kari,

I thank you for posting instructions on how to create a customized image of windows 10. I followed exactly how you stated the instructions everything has been great all the way up until the point of trying to install windows 10. I have a Dell e5590 laptop i7, 16gig ram, 500gig hd. As I said earlier I followed EXACTLY how you took us step by step through the instructions in creating a customized windows 10. Everything has worked all the way up until when I try to install windows it comes up stating: «no images are available». I used a few of our different keys, a key you provided and others that Microsoft provided still not working. I have changed that key several times in the autounattend file still doesn’t seem to work. Is there any other suggestions you could provide or advice to what could be my problem? I have been stuck on this for a few days I just can’t seem to get this problem corrected. I have tried so many suggestions and none of them work. I would appreciate it. If it’s not product keys what else could it be? I have used windows 10 v1903 throughout the whole process.

I used this guide:

but I’m using Windows 11 22H2.

so first I installed Windows 11 on Hyper-V, installed my software on it, SysPrepped it (genaralize, boot to OOBE and shut down).
then booted the VM to Windows 11pe, captured the Windows installation to an install.wim

replaced the custom install.wim with the original one, created a new ISO, created a new VM, chose that new ISO to boot from, then I get this error:

(i’m not using an answer file)

Windows 11 22H2

I followed this tutorial exactly http://neosmart.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5399 Would have posted reply there, but the guy has been offline for a very long time and wasn’t sure anyone monitored it. Feel free to move this there if you like.

I’ve done it both with Server 2008 and Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. But this is always the result (can’t count how many times I tried):

Thanks ahead of time.

Note: I ran thru the steps 2 more times, only this time the backups were full size, not compressed like happened the first few times I did this. No idea why. So my final install.wim file ended up actually bigger than before (8.7 Gigs vs 7.3), even though I had way less stuff on the hard drive! Anyway, the installation proceeded «normally» this time, save there was no dialogue to choose drive options; but there was no way to get into Windows in a Virtual machine as the drivers installed conflicted with the VMware’s drivers. I couldn’t even engage a repair option within the virtual machine for some reason.

Had no idea EasyBCD created bootable USBs (still don’t see that option). I’ve always used UltraISO to do that. I’m a little fuzzy about what you meant by "recovery iso". Do you mean the Window 7 restore ISO from NeoSmart?

Obviously, I never made it into Windows the first time as it kept hitting stop errors (probably meaning the video driver probably was trying to force itself on the virtual machine), so can the restore iso can be used in this situation while preserving my installation with all my programs and settings?

Ideally, I’d like to do the Windows installation in a similar fashion to what that guide talked about without having to run a repair in the middle of it. Is that even possible with a virtual machine? Need to test it before trying in the real world, of course. And why the heck was my backup the same size as my system drive? It shaved off 5 Gigs the first couple times I tried it. Thanks. Update: I ran the repair which took 15 minutes the second try. No luck. Big bad stop error. So it’s a bust with a virtual machine. So tempted to try the install on my real computer—not!

It’s EasyBCD 2.0 > Bootloader Setup > Create External Media > select a USB drive from the dropdown
