If you were around in the 90’s, then you’ve likely encountered this sound. Microsoft Windows 95 was released on August 24, 1995, and support for it ran until the turn of the century. But in its time, Windows 95 was the game-changing operating system that, unlike its predecessor Windows 3.1, became the foundation we’ve come to love today.
As you can see in the launch trailer for Windows 95, Microsoft had quite the ambition for a consumer-oriented desktop. Then brand new, the OS redesigned the essential desktop with shortcuts and taskbar. It also replaced the 3.1 File Manager with the smoother Windows Explorer. Under the hood, the transition to 32-bit architecture and ‘plug-and-play’ capabilities set Windows 95 as a flagship for its future iterations.
Even as ground-breaking as Microsoft Windows 95 was for PCs, one commenter called out the ridiculous scenes in its ‘Start Me Up’ launch commercial. “Sitting in a coffee shop with a desktop computer. #winning,” they teased. Yet in this case, it was just another example of the vision for technology just a little (or a lot) before its time.
While we may not be clamoring to bring our bulky CRT monitors out of the garage, it’s always nice to look back. What is your fondest memory of using Windows 95? We’d love to hear your stories in the comments below or tweet us @OnMSFT.

Radu Tyrsina has been a Windows fan ever since he got his first PC, a Pentium III (a monster at that time).
For most of the kids of his age, the Internet was an amazing way to play and communicate with others, but he was deeply impressed by the flow of information and how easily you can find anything on the web.
Prior to founding Windows Report, this particular curiosity about digital content enabled him to grow a number of sites that helped hundreds of millions reach faster the answer they’re looking for.
In 1995, Microsoft released Windows 95 for the first time. The event was broadcast live on CNN and featured Bill Gates, who shared his vision of a digital world that would change forever. This edited video captures just one part of this amazing spectacle with songs from Naughty By Nature to go along with it!
The “full windows launch event video is” is a video that was released on the internet in 1995, but it has finally been made available. The video features Microsoft’s Windows 95 launch event, and showcases some of the best moments from the company’s first public release.

If you’re a Windows fan looking for a nostalgic trip down memory lane, you’ll want to thank Blue OS Museum, as the YouTube channel has unearthed and shared a full version of one of Microsoft’s more amusing moments in history: the launch of Windows 95 with then-CEO Bill Gates and talk show host Jay Leno.
The lecture, which was originally recorded on August 24, 1995, is worth seeing for people who miss the good old days, when creating desktop shortcuts and being able to transfer tables from Excel into Word still drew enthusiasm and applause from audiences.
However, the movie also reminds us of how cringe-worthy Microsoft could be at the time, with Steve Ballmer posing as a salesman and yelling in your face to sell Windows 1.0. “I just need a twenty-inch monitor and a handful of hard drives,” says an instructor in another section of the curriculum, who dazzles his pupils by opening Photoshop 3.0 with a single keystroke.
Microsoft Windows 95 Launch with Bill Gates & Jay Leno (1995) (Blue OS Museum)
After almost 27 years, the holy grail of Microsoft launch events has finally been made accessible for watching enjoyment. This launch event showcases Jay Leno as he explores Windows 95 and the campus while cracking really cheesy and dated celebrity jokes, so hearing Bill Gates speak while he isn’t there is a welcome relief.
A lot of video from this event has been circulating about for years, but the whole unedited version has never been seen by anybody outside of participants, the press, and the development team, so you’ll be seeing a lot of things that no one else has seen. Some of the websites at the conclusion, for example, include pages from the previous MSN service and the official webpage for the Windows 95 launch campus, which has rich web graphics. All of this was visible in Internet Explorer 1.0!
This video also has the iconic Windows 1.0 “commercial” with Steve Ballmer that I previously released, in case you’re curious where it came from. It’s also one of multiple distinct prints for that video, since other ancient versions with various intros have been seen circulating around.
A vital detail about Windows 95’s release to production date is also brought up at the beginning of the film, since the one on Wikipedia incorrectly claims August 15th, so that’s another mystery solved.
This is the ultimate apex of my VHS collection, and I doubt anything else I own will ever come close to matching it. It was also rather costly to get! That doesn’t mean my collecting days are over; I’ll be returning to upload new cassettes from time to time, largely to the Internet Archive. So now I provide you with this important piece of software history, and I hope you hold it in high respect as much as I do. Enjoy!
