UnxUtils is a collection of utility programs that provide popular Unix-based shell commands – ported from GNU implementations as native Windows programs that depend only on Win32 and the Microsoft C-runtime (msvcrt.dll). The collection was last updated externally on April 15, 2003, by Karl M. Syring. As of December 2016, the most recent release was an open-source project at SourceForge, with the latest binary release in March, 2007 (though the files are dated 2000). The independent distribution included a main zip archive (UnxUtils.zip, 3,365,638 bytes) complemented by more recent updates (UnxUpdates.zip, 878,847 bytes, brought some binaries up to year 2003), but the SourceForge project has no UnxUpdates.zip package.
An alternative collection of Unix-based utilities for Windows is GnuWin32. It has later versions of many programs, but requires supporting files (e.g. DLLs).[1]

How to install

Open CMD at the application folder

Put this script to CMD
mkdir %AppData%\WinixTools copy Tools\* %AppData%\WinixTools SET path=%AppData%\WinixTools;%path%
or start start.bat file
- CMD → Always run as Administrator
- Changing System Environment Variables → Environment settings → System variables → Path → Edit… → Create →
%AppData%\WinixTools
P.s %AppData% it’s equal C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming
- Restart CMD
- All ready to go!

I work with unix operating systems quite a bit. So when I’m using Windows I’m often missing some of the handy little command line unix tools that are ubiquitous to unix but no where to be found on Windows.
Just today I was wanting to use the GNU find utility. The find command on unix lists all the files in a directory recursively. Its really handy because if you need to find out where a file is you just type find /path | fgrep search.file. One thing that frustrates me about the Windows search is that you have to search an entire drive — if I know the file I am looking for is in c:\windows why should I have to search the entire c:\ drive?
So I came across some Native Win32 Ports of some GNU utilities: unxutils.sourceforge.net, such as find, grep (as well as fgrep, and egrep). These are nice because you can run them right from the windows command line, so no need to run in an emulator like cygwin.
One thing you need to keep in mind is that some of these utilities might have the same name as some windows utilities, you probably better off renaming these in the case of conflict. For instance Windows comes with a program called find.exe that searches for text inside a file, so I renamed the GNU find to xfind.exe.

With the recent blue screen of death incident, I kind of thought about how much I missed working in Linux.
I’ve also been mentally resisting to learn more CMD commands for a while now. That said, using UnxUtils is a way to use Unix commands in Windows without the need to activate or install Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).
Here’s how to setup UnxUtils:
- Download the zip file.
- Unzip the file to a desired location in the local machine.
- Add the path of the executables (e.g.
D:\Programs\UnxUtils\usr\local\wbin) to Windows environment variables. See these steps, or below:- Search for “Envrionment variables” using Windows taskbar
- Select “Edit environment variables for your account”
- Add the path to the executable files in either User
PATHvariable (to make the execs available to current user only) or SystemPATHvariable (to make them available to other users).
- Refresh terminals. If existing terminals are open, close and open another instance to refresh. To refresh VS Code terminal, close VS Code, open a new CMD terminal, type
code. This will open a new instance of VS Code with environment variables refreshed. - Check to see if the commands are available. Open a new terminal and type
ls,cat, or test creating a new file usingtouche.g.touch text.file.
If these commands ran without issues, Unix commands are now available in Windows CMD.
The BSOD incident also makes me think how global tech infrastructure is concernedly fragile — despite all the discussions around cloud computing (replication zones), blockchain and AGI for years. There’s only a handful of tech companies that dominate the industry which, unfortunately in this case, includes infrastructures in critical services such as healthcare. Tech has had its fair number of issues such as mass layoffs, and tools in the internet somehow still managing to blame DEI. Yet incidents like this goes to show that there’s so much invisible work to make modern digital infrastructure sound.
