How to use the themes
This site let’s you preview and then copy a theme you like (or download a json file with all of them).
The official docs for Windows Terminal seem to very thoroughly explain how to change the settings, but essentially:
- open Windows Terminal settings
- add your chosen theme(s) to
schemes - in
profiles, find the shell you’re using (eg cmd, powershell, ubuntu) and replacecolorSchemewith the name of the theme - 🥳
Contribute a theme
Ideally for the ecosystem new themes should be proposed to iTerm2-Color-Schemes (where most of these themes come from), then everyone can benefit.
If not, new themes can be add added with a pull request. Just add them to the list in app/src/custom-colour-schemes.json. You shouldn’t need to run anything. If you’d like to receive credit, or know who should, please add it to app/src/credits.json.

Running
Install using yarn and run using yarn start, this should start both the React app and Express server.
You can run all the tests with yarn test:dev.
E2E tests are run with cypress. You can use yarn cy:open to open and develop using the Dashboard and run test suite with yarn cy:run. There’s a few unit test using Jest that you can develop using yarn unit:watch.
There’s CI with CircleCI and there’s visual regression tests with Percy too.
Compiling the themes
The json list is generated by the Express server in /server. It merges all the schemes found in the iTerm2-Color-Schemes/windowsterminal using the GitHub API, then combines it with src/custom-colour-schemes.json in /app. It runs on a server with a daily cron job.

Windows Terminal
Download
Download using the GitHub .zip download option.
Install
Start Windows Terminal and click on the down arrow symbol ˅ from menu bar. This will open a drop down menu from which select Settings option. Alternatively use Ctrl + , to open Settings directly.
In the bottom left click Open JSON Settings
In the settings.json settings file for Windows Terminal, find the schemes section and paste the content of dracula.json.

Activate
Once the color scheme has been defined, it’s time to enable it. Find the profiles section and add a colorScheme value to the default profile.
Example:

How to install third-party themes in Windows Terminal?
Even though installing a third-party theme looks like coding, it’s not. We can pretty easily copy the code, then paste it to the correct JSON file and save it to allow Terminal to recognize the theme. Follow the steps mentioned below to do the same.
- If you go to any of the websites mentioned below, you will get an option to copy a code.
- Once you do that, open Terminal, click on the down-arrow (v) and click on Settings.
- Now, click on Open JSON file.
- Go to the Schemes section, scroll down after the last curly bracket ({), add a comma (,), and paste the code we asked you to copy.
- Save and close the JSON file.
- Now, in Terminal’s Settings, go to Color schemes, and select the scheme you need to apply.
- To apply that theme, click on the Set as default button
You can save the changes you have made and it will do the trick for you.

How do I make my CMD look cool?
There are many ways to customize how the appearance of our Command Prompt looks. How do I make Windows Terminal more colorful?
To make Windows Terminal more colorful, we will be selecting a color scheme, and here’s how to do it:
- Launch Windows Terminal, and click on the drown arrow in the Tab bar.
- Click on the Settings option and then locate the Theme section.
- Select a preferred theme, and then hit the Save button to change the theme.
We can also change color schemes such as foreground and background color, and Cursor color from settings.

How to install a custom theme
Let’s take a look at how to install custom themes in your Windows Terminal.
Again, we head over to the Windows Terminals Settings. Either click the Settings drop-down in the tab bar, or hit Ctrl+, (on Windows). This brings up your settings.json file, and you can quickly make any modifications you need.
Here’s an example of implementing a custom color theme in the json file. You modify the schemes array and enter one or more themes here. Later, we will refer to the theme by the name — in the example below, that is Solarized Dark Patched.
If you, like me, don’t want to customize the theme by hand — there’s a plethora of existing themes in the wild.
Where can I find themes?
I really like the themes available at terminalsplash.com. While there are many more sites and repositories with themes, these are a good starting point if you’re looking to customize your daily Windows Terminal use.
Clicking on «Code» under a theme gets you the color configuration.

If you want custom background images, you click «Source» to go to the GitHub repo of the theme, and you can download any resources including the background images from there.
To apply the new color scheme to your Windows Terminal, modify the colorScheme property and point it to the name of the theme you just added to your file.
Save your settings file, and your Windows Terminal is refreshed with the theme of your choice.
