Смарт-папки — замечательная вещь. Активнее всего ими пользуются владельцы Mac, но и в Windows можно найти их аналоги. Смарт-папки могут многое: собрать документы, над которыми вы активно работаете, отыскать вашу любимую музыку на диске, отобразить изображения похожего размера или фотографии, сделанные определённой камерой. Если вы настроите нужные вам смарт-папки, вам не придётся искать или сортировать данные в обычных папках.
Смарт-папки технически не папки, а настройки поиска. В тот момент, когда вы открываете смарт-папку, в неё добавляются файлы с определёнными критериями.
Создаём смарт-папки
Mac
Смарт-папки — одна из основных фишек Mac. Они есть в Finder, в «Почте» (смарт-ящики), в «Фото» (смарт-альбомы), в iTunes (смарт-плейлисты).
Чтобы создать смарт-папку в Finder, начните вводить текст в строку поиска. Далее добавьте новые критерии поиска и укажите места, где следует искать файлы. Затем сохраните вашу смарт-папку. Если нужно, добавьте её на панель Finder, чтобы она постоянно была под рукой.
Если вы добавляете условия, щёлкая по значку «+», то Mac будет искать файлы, удовлетворяющие всем критериям. Если зажать Alt во время добавления условия, то система будет искать файлы, подходящие под любой из критериев.
Чтобы отредактировать уже созданную смарт-папку, откройте её и щелкните по значку шестерёнки в панели инструментов Finder.
Windows
В Windows смарт-папки называются сохранёнными поисками. Чтобы создать сохранённый поиск, начните искать что-либо в окне Explorer и щёлкните по вкладке «Поиск». Добавьте необходимые критерии поиска и сохраните. По умолчанию он отправляется в папку «Сохранённые поиски», но вы можете сохранить его в любом месте, чтобы нужные поиски всегда были на виду.

Используем смарт-папки
Документы

Изображения
Изображения и фотографии раскладываются по смарт-папкам, как и остальные файлы, но для них можно задавать специфические критерии поиска. Можно сделать папку, собирающую изображения определённого размера или фотографии, сделанные в конкретном месте, если ваш фотоаппарат или телефон проставляет геотеги.
Изображения можно искать как в файловых менеджерах Finder и Explorer, так и в специальных программах для управления медиатекой, например «Фото» для Mac.
Музыка
Создавать смарт-плейлисты можно в iTunes или в плеерах Clementine или AIMP.
Чтобы создать плейлист, в котором будет собрана музыка без тегов, задайте в смарт-плейлисте условие «Исполнитель», «Имя», «Жанр» или «Год» и оставьте поля пустыми. Так вы сразу увидите, каким композициям не хватает тегов. Как только вы их проставите, треки пропадут из этого плейлиста.
Чтобы создать плейлист с любимыми композициями, задайте следующее условие: «Количество воспроизведений» больше 25, «Оценка» совпадает с «Нравится» или «Рейтинг» больше четырёх звезд. Так вы соберёте самые прослушиваемые и высоко оценённые треки в одном месте.
Таким же образом можно создавать плейлисты для композиций, загруженных недавно, которые вы ещё не прослушали, или плейлист с ненужной музыкой, которая имеет невысокий рейтинг.
Почта
Смарт-ящики есть в «Почте» Mac, в Thunderbird, Evolution, Outlook и веб-интерфейсе Gmail. Их можно использовать, чтобы фильтровать потоки поступающей корреспонденции. Кроме того, смарт-ящики умеют расставлять метки и присваивать приоритет письмам.
Например, смарт-ящик «Работа» может собирать письма от ваших коллег, фильтруя их по адресату. Или, если вложения письма содержат макеты .indd или файлы .pdf, они отправятся в смарт-ящик «Макеты». Можно также создать ящики с важными сообщениями, на которые вы ещё не ответили, или с письмами с определённой темой, полученными не позднее прошлого месяца.
Загрузки
Ещё один вариант использования смарт-папок — сортировка загрузок. Если у вас всё скачанное из интернета направляется в папку «Загрузки» и оседает там, разобраться в этой мешанине будет нелегко.
Чтобы рассортировать файлы, создайте смарт-папки для каждого типа загрузок: «Архивы», «Видео», «Документы», «Изображения», «Музыка», «Программы». Далее присвойте каждой папке необходимые условия поиска по типу файлов и настройте их так, чтобы загрузки отображались по дате.
Дополнительно можно создать папку «Удалить», куда будут попадать файлы, пролежавшие в «Загрузках» больше месяца. Если вы ими так и не воспользуетесь, от них можно будет избавиться одним махом.
Торренты
Метки в торрент-клиентах вполне могут выполнять роль смарт-папок. Transmission, qBittorrent и другие загрузчики торрентов могут присваивать контенту метки в зависимости от содержимого и загружать файлы в указанные папки. Фильмы отправятся в «Фильмы», а музыка — в «Музыку».
Смарт-папки, фильтры и плейлисты можно настраивать под себя. Всё зависит только от ваших потребностей.
Smart Folders is a free tool for Windows that allows users to create a folder just by dragging files/file over another file. It provides the same folder creation functionality that is present in iOS and Android for saving time.
How to use:
Run the installer and click the Install button. The app will now install and register itself for all extensions. But Windows and some other apps have already registered themselves for specific file extensions like .exe, .bat, .lnk etc. To register the app for specific file extensions, type the extension in the text box near File Extension and click Register. To unregister the app for a specific file extension, select the extension in the Registered File Extensions list and click Unregister.
Once you have installed and configured the app, drag multiple files or a single file over any file and the app will create a folder automatically. It will ask you to name the folder:
Just type a name and click OK or press enter. If you click Cancel or type a blank name, the app will name the folder like Folder 1, Folder 2 etc.
To uninstall the app, run the installer again and click the Uninstall button. The app will unregister itself for all file extensions and uninstall itself.

Setting up smart folders on a Windows PC is very easy, and we will show you how to do it on Windows 7, 8, and 10. So bad luck Windows 95, XP, and Vista users!
What Is a Smart Folder?
Before I show you exactly how to make a smart folder, it is probably prudent that I explain first what one is, and the advantages you can get from them. Otherwise you will be closing this page now and heading to YouTube to find videos of laughing babies.
The first thing to bear in mind is that a smart folder is not actually a folder at all. It is a saved search. If you regularly make the same kinds of searches on your Windows PC, then it would be productive to save those searches for the future. That’s where a smart folder comes in. As I show you how to make one, it will become clearer.
The advantages start with what I just mentioned — saving regular searches that you make in Windows/File Explorer. If you often look for PDF files, JPG images, MP4 video files, and so forth, then you can save that search. When you need to run that search again, it would just be a matter of clicking on the Smart Folder icon, and that search starts running. That is why it is smart — because it knows beforehand what you want to look for and does it automatically for you.
Smart Folders would also be useful if you were running out of storage space on your PC, and you needed to find all the big files taking up the space. Just save and run Smart Folders for all of the usual big file types (MP4, AVI, MP3, FLAC, and so on). A double-click on each will bring up the big fat files that you need to get off your PC.
Making a Smart Folder
OK, we are going to start with Windows 10 and work our way back, since Windows 10 is the current flavor of the month.
First, go to File Explorer, and in the top right hand corner, enter your search term(s) in the search box. For the purposes of this demonstration, I am going to be searching for all of the PDF files on my computer. Grrrrr…..PDF files! Got to find those critters!
The search will then start running, highlighting all of the relevant files.
When the search has finished, go to the menu at the top, and click on the Search tab. There, you will see an option to save the search.
Once you click that option, you will be prompted to save the search with a unique name, and put it in a folder location of your choosing. To keep things simple, you could just go with «PDF Search», and create a folder called «Saved Searches». But it’s totally up to you.
A blue folder icon with a magnifying glass will then be saved in the location you specified.
Now, just click that Smart Folder icon (or any other Smart Folder you set up) and see the search instantly spring into life again.
And that’s pretty much it. Such a simple thing, but also something that will save you loads of time, when you need to run any File Explorer searches in the future.
Windows 7 & 8.1
The process is pretty much the same for Windows 7 and 8, except for minor cosmetic differences.

Other Search Options
Windows Explorer is not perfect. I think everyone can agree on that. Even though we have gone through so many incarnations of Windows, the one area which Redmond seems to be constantly neglecting is Windows/File Explorer. Not a lot has changed in its design over the years, and its search function — even though it works, albeit slowly — really does suck (and Joel agrees with me). You are better off using the Start Menu — that can search through your computer as well. The Start Menu in Windows 10 is quite good in this regard.
A few years back, Aaron covered 7 alternative search apps for Windows, and Joel came up with some crackers of his own. They are all pretty good options, blitzing through your computer like Road Runner on steroids. With apps like that, it does make you wonder why Microsoft still refuses to make their File Explorer search function any better. It’s almost as if all the attention is now being focused on the Start Menu with Cortana’s voice search, while the File Explorer search sits quietly in the background, slowly being eased into retirement.

Creating new folders has never been easier than in Windows 7. Just use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Shift-n to create a new folder. It is automatically selected to let you change the name of the folder to a more descriptive one.
It still takes multiple actions to copy files to that new folder, and while you could use a program like MyFolders to quickly move or copy files to selected folders, the action would still require multiple steps to complete.
Smart Folders
Smart Folders is a free program for the Windows operating system that combines folder generation and file moving in one step.
When you start the program for the first time you need to click on the install button to register its functionality in Windows Explorer. Please note that you can only use it in Windows Explorer and not in third party file managers that you may have installed as well.
The basic idea is simple: Drag and drop files onto each other to spawn a new folder creation prompt. Enter the desired name for the new folder to complete the action.
This works only with files that you drag on top of each other, and not with folders.
The program is by default compatible with all file extensions. You can limit that functionality in the program settings by registering only select file extensions. This did not work properly during tests though.
You can unregister the program functionality at any time with a click on the uninstall button in the program interface.
Verdict
Smart Folders is a handy tool for users who often need to create new folders to move files into them. It is especially useful to move different file types quickly into different new folders. Whether that is enough to warrant its installation on the system is up to each individual user.
It may depend on the frequency of the operation; if you need to create new folders and move folders to it just occasionally, you may not require use of an extra program for that. If you do so regularly, you may benefit from Smart Folders or comparable applications.
Drop It is an alternative for that specific purpose. It can be used to sort files based on patterns into destination folders. A pattern can be a file extension for instance.
