The lock screen in Windows serves as the initial interface you encounter when you start your device or wake it from sleep. It provides a layer of security by requiring a biometric gesture, PIN, or password to access your desktop. Beyond its security function, the lock screen is highly customizable, allowing you to personalize it with different background images, such as a single picture, a slideshow, or dynamic content from Windows spotlight. You can also add useful information, making the lock screen both visually appealing and informative.

You can personalize your lock screen by displaying detailed status information from a specific app. This feature allows you to choose an app to show relevant updates directly on the lock screen.

Weather and more app
The Weather and more app for the Windows lock screen enhances the lock screen experience by providing dynamic, real-time updates. It displays current weather conditions, dynamic updates related to finance, sports, traffic, and more through small widgets.
This app allows you to stay informed at a glance without unlocking your device, making it a convenient tool for quick updates. To read more about the information displayed on a widget, select it on the lock screen, sign in, and view the full details in Microsoft Edge.
Note: Currently, you can’t customize the widgets list in the Weather and more app.
The Weather and more app leverages the Widgets app for its configuration. You can customize location, language, region, and temperature units by configuring Widgets. For more information, see Configure Widgets settings.
Note: the Weather and more app on the lock screen might tailor content based on your location estimation to provide you with the most contextually relevant experience. Location estimation can come from the Windows Location service, if enabled, otherwise it might fall back on using the IP address of your internet connection.

On Windows 11, when the computer starts, you will stumble upon the Lock screen, which includes the date and time, app status, and image background.
Although the default configuration will be enough for most users, it’s also possible to customize various aspects of the feature. For example, you can show personal pictures, choose whether to show weather and other information and even prevent the Sign-in screen from displaying the Lock screen background.
In this how-to guide, I’ll outline the steps to customize the Lock screen on your laptop or desktop computer.
How to customize background for Lock screen
On Windows 11, you can customize the background in at least three different ways, including using Windows Spotlight to sync and show images from the cloud, custom background images, or you can display a collection of personal pictures.
Windows Spotlight
To enable Spotlight in the Lock screen, use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Personalization.
- Click the Lock screen page on the right side.
- Use the «Personalize your lock screen» setting and select the Windows Spotlight option.
Once you complete the steps, the feature will periodically download and show new background images.
Custom background image
To use a custom background image in the Lock screen, use these steps:

- Open Settings.
- Click on Personalization.
- Click the Lock screen page on the right side.
- Use the «Personalize your lock screen» setting and select the Picture option.
- Click the Browse photos button.
- Select the image to set as the new Lock screen background.
- Click the Choose Picture button.
- Clear the «Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen» option.
After you complete the steps, the Lock screen will show the image you selected in the settings.
Collection background images
To show a collection of images in the Windows 11 Lock screen, use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Personalization.
- Click the Lock screen page on the right side.
- Use the «Personalize your lock screen» setting and select the Slideshow option.
- (Optional) Click the Remove button for the «Pictures» folder.
- Click the Browse button.
- Select the folder with the collection of images to use as a slideshow for the Lock screen.
- Click the «Choose this folder» button.
- Clear the «Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen» option.
- (Optional) Check the «Include camera roll folder from this PC and OneDrive» option under the «Advanced slide settings» section.
- (Optional) Clear the «Only use pictures that fit my screen» option to show all the images from a collection.
- (Optional) Check the «When my PC is inactive, show the lock screen instead of turning off the screen» option.
- (Optional) Select the time before turning off the display after playing the slideshow in the «Turn off the screen after the slideshow has played» setting.
Once you complete the steps, the Lock screen will rotate the collection of images in the background, and it’ll turn off the display according to your configuration.
How to customize app status for Lock screen
To decide the apps that can show status in the Lock screen, use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Personalization.
- Click the Lock screen page on the right side.
- Choose the «Weather and more» option to show the weather and widgets for finance, traffic, and sports using the «Lock screen status» setting.
- (Optional) Choose the None option to disable app status in the Lock screen.
- Quick note: You can also show the status for the Mail, Calendar, and Dev Home apps. However, the number of apps may be different, depending on the applications you have installed on the computer.
After you complete the steps, the Lock screen will show the weather information, plus finance, sports, and traffic information, or the status of the app you specified.
How to enable or disable background image for Sign-in screen
To prevent the Sign-in screen from showing a background image, use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Personalization.
- Click the Lock screen page on the right side.
- Turn on or off the «Show the lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen» toggle switch.
Once you complete the steps, the Sign-in screen will no longer show the same background images as the Lock screen.

Активация режима блокировки в Windows 11
Начать нужно с того, что экран блокировки в Windows 11 будет появляться только в тех случаях, когда для активного профиля или для всей операционной системы настроен соответствующий режим. Обычно он действует во всех случаях, когда для учетной записи установлена защита. Тогда экран блокировки появится как при загрузке ОС, так и при выходе из спящего режима. Если вы еще не установили защиту или даже с ней вход происходит автоматически, обратите внимание на две следующие инструкции.
Вариант 1: Установка защиты входа
Самый простой метод активации режима блокировки — установка защиты для аккаунта. Это может быть вход как по распознаванию лица или отпечатку пальца, так и через пароль либо PIN-код. Выбор подходящего метода защиты выглядит следующим образом:
- Откройте «Пуск» и перейдите в «Параметры», отыскав значок шестеренки в списке закрепленных значков.
- На панели слева выберите «Учетные записи» и перейдите к категории «Варианты входа».
- Теперь вы видите все доступные варианты защиты вашего аккаунта от автоматической авторизации. Основных представлено 4 или 6 (дополнительные варианты, отсутствующие на скриншоте ниже, это «Пароль» и «Графический пароль»), а на некоторых компьютерах доступен будет только вход по PIN-коду или через физический ключ безопасности, что нужно далеко не всем.
- Допустим, вы выбрали вариант вода по PIN-коду. Вам нужно установить его, развернув список с настройками, и запомнить, чтобы в дальнейшем использовать для входа в ОС.

Вариант 2: Редактирование реестра
Вариант с редактированием реестра подходит в том случае, если даже при установленной защите учетной записи в Windows 11 экран блокировки не отображается или вы хотите видеть его всегда перед входом или выходом из спящего режима. Тогда поможет редактирование реестра, заключающееся в создании всего одного параметра.
- Откройте «Пуск», через поиск отыщите «Редактор реестра» и запустите данное приложение.
- В нем перейдите по пути
Компьютер\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization, просто вставив его в адресную строку и нажав Enter. - В конечной папке щелкните правой кнопкой мыши по пустому месту справа, наведите курсор на «Создать» и выберите пункт «Параметр DWORD (32 бита)».
- Задайте для него название «NoLockScreen», после чего дважды щелкните по этому параметру, чтобы открыть его свойства.
- Значение поставьте как «0», сохраните изменения и перезагрузите компьютер.
Настройка автоматической блокировки Windows
Переход на экран блокировки в Windows 11 может происходить в автоматическом режиме. Существует два метода настройки, и мы оба из них затронем в одной следующей инструкции, поскольку они связаны между собой. Однако у второго есть весомое ограничение: использовать его могут только юзеры, компьютеры или ноутбуки которых поддерживают технологию Bluetooth.
- Для открытия нужного раздела с настройками в «Параметрах» выберите «Учетные записи» и перейдите в «Варианты входа».
- Далее для параметра «В случае вашего отсутствия через какое время Windows должна потребовать выполнить повторный вход?» выберите вариант «Время выхода компьютера из спящего режима». Это позволит автоматически блокировать учетную запись во время перехода в спящий режим, а при выходе из него появится экран блокировки, где уже и нужно будет ввести пароль для входа.
- Активируйте «Динамическую блокировку» только в том случае, если ваш ПК или ноутбук поддерживает Bluetooth.
- Тогда вы увидите параметр для связывания мобильного устройства. Если оно будет успешно привязано, операционная система определит, что вы вместе со своим телефоном отошли от компьютера и его нужно автоматически заблокировать.
Изменение состояния экрана блокировки
Основная настройка для самого экрана блокировки, а не перехода в него, заключается в изменении приложения, которое будет всегда отображаться в данном режиме без необходимости входа в операционную систему. Вместе с этим поддерживается настройка заставки, которая может воспроизводиться тоже на экране блокировки. Обо всем этом более детально вы узнаете в следующей инструкции.
- В «Параметрах» выберите «Персонализация» и в списке справа отыщите категорию «Экран блокировки».
- Разверните меню напротив параметра «Состояние экрана блокировки» и выберите приложение, которое хотели бы видеть на экране в данном режиме. Вы сможете управлять им и получать актуальную информацию со своей учетной записи.
- Что касается проигрываемой заставки, то для ее активации в режиме блокировки нужно щелкнуть по ссылке «Заставка» внизу в этом же окне.
- Далее выберите одну из доступных анимаций в списке и обязательно поставьте галочку «Начинать с экрана входа в систему». Теперь она будет воспроизводиться не только в ждущем режиме, но и при отображении экрана блокировки.
Персонализация экрана блокировки
Помимо функциональных изменений для экрана блокировки, пользователь может настроить и его внешний вид. Поддерживается установка любых изображений, добавление слайд-шоу и выбор отображения интересных фактов от Microsoft. Ручной переход к экрану блокировки
В завершение давайте вкратце разберем тему ручного перехода к экрану блокировки, что будет актуально, если пользователь не хочет ждать автоматического перехода к спящему режиму, не желает полностью выключать компьютер или выходить из системы с завершением приложений. На этот случай мы подготовили три простых способа. Первый заключается в использовании горячей клавиши Win + L. Достаточно просто нажать по ней, после чего сразу произойдет блокировка учетной записи.
Еще можно вызвать меню «Пуск», нажать левой кнопкой мыши по имени своего профиля и из списка действий выбрать «Блокировка». При этом вы только блокируете компьютер до ввода пароля, а не выходите из учетной записи. Далее вы сможете просто ввести пароль и продолжить работать с Windows ровно там же, где и остановились.
Последний вариант подразумевает переход в спящий режим или выход из профиля, если это является для вас приоритетным вариантом. Понадобится щелкнуть ПКМ по меню «Пуск», навести курсор на «Завершение работы или выход из системы», затем выбрать подходящий для вас вариант из списка.

When your Windows 11 PC is locked, you’ll see a lock screen with a clock, date, and a special background image. Here’s how you can change the lock screen photo, remove the tips, and customize other elements on the screen.
First, right-click an empty part of your desktop and select «Personalize.» Or you can open Settings with Windows+i and click «Personalization» in the sidebar.
In Settings > Personalization, click «Lock Screen.»
In Lock Screen settings, you have three main options: Personalize Your Lock Screen, which lets you set a custom image or slideshow as your lock screen background, Lock Screen Status, which displays a status widget on the lock screen, and an option that disables the lock screen picture on the sign-in screen.
To change your lock screen background image, click the drop-down box beside «Personalize Your Lock Screen» and choose either «Picture» or «Slideshow.» (The default option is «Windows Spotlight,» which pulls images provided by Microsoft from the Internet.)
If you select «Slideshow,» you can browse for a folder full of images you’d like to use. Windows will rotate between them automatically over time. If you choose «Picture,» you can select a recent image from the thumbnail list or click «Browse Photos» and choose a custom image yourself.
If you don’t want to see tips and cute statements from Microsoft on your lock screen, you can disable that by unchecking the box beside «Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen.» This will remove the words and tips from your lock screen completely.
Below that, you can choose an app to show detailed status on the lock screen, such as how many unread emails you have or the current weather. Click the drop-down list and make a selection.
And finally, if you don’t want to see your lock screen background image on your Windows 11 sign-in screen (where you enter your password, PIN, or otherwise), switch «Show the lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen» to «Off.»
(Keeping this «On» is perfectly fine, too, depending on your personal preference.)
After that, close Settings, and you’re ready to go. You can test the lock screen by pressing Windows+L on your keyboard or by clicking your account name in Start and selecting «Lock.» Have fun!
As you use your Windows 11 PC, you’ll notice that you’ll be staring at its lock screen a lot. It appears when you boot up the PC, log off, or when you manually lock the computer. As such, you’ll want to make make the Windows 11 lock screen look as fancy as you’d like.
By default, the lock screen displays a calendar date and time status in the center, a network icon at the bottom right, and random Windows Spotlight backgrounds as the wallpaper. However, there are a few ways you can customize the Windows 11 lock screen to suit your preferences.
How to Change the Lock Scree Background on Windows 11
The lock screen includes random Spotlight background images, which are nice photos. However, you might prefer to add your own pictures to the lock screen instead. You can customize that screen to include images of your choosing via Settings as follows.
- First, click Windows 11’s Start button to bring up the platform’s primary menu.
- Select the pinned Settings app from there.

Click the Personalization tab and its Lock screen navigation option.

Choose the Picture option on the Personalize your lock screen drop-down menu.
- Then click Personalize your lock screen to view its picture options.
- Press the Browse photos button.
- Select an image for the lock screen’s background, and press the Choose picture button.
Now your lock screen will include the background image you chose for it. If you prefer, you can include a slideshow background for the lock screen that automatically rotates the images it displays. You can set up a lock screen slideshow as follows.

Select the Slideshow option on the drop-down menu.
- Click the Browse button.
- Choose a folder that includes images for a slideshow. If you don’t have such a folder, set up a new one that includes only the pictures for the lock’s screen slideshow.
- Press the Choose this folder button.
- Click Advanced slideshow settings to expand its options. Then you can select optional settings such as Only use pictures that fit my screen and Include camera roll folders from this PC and OneDrive.
- Then click the Turn off the screen after the slideshow has played for drop-down menu to select an option of preference there.
When you select the Picture or Slideshow option, you can also change a few other settings. If you don’t want the login screen to share the same wallpaper as the lock screen, turn off the Show the lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen setting. Then the login screen will have a blank background.
There’s also a Get fun facts, and tips, tricks and more on your lock screen setting within the image options. If you don’t want trivial fun facts and tips on your lock screen, uncheck that checkbox.
How to Change the Displayed Lock Screen Apps on Windows 11
The lock screen can display three different app statuses. Its default configuration is to show the calendar time and date. However, you can change the screen to show mail or weather app details instead.
To do so, simply click the Lock screen status option’s drop-down menu within Settings, which is just below Personalize your lock screen. Then select an alternative app option on the menu. Or you can choose None instead.
How to Adjust the Timeout Settings for the Lock Screen on Windows 11
The timeout settings are related options that determine how long your PC must be inactive to activate sleep mode. You’ll see your lock screen more often by selecting a lower timeout setting. This is how you can change the lock screen’s timeout settings.
- Select Personalization and Lock screen in Settings.
- Then click the Screen timeout navigation option.

Select Screen and sleep to bring up the options in the snapshot directly below.
- Click the When plugged in, turn off my screen after drop-down menu to select a timeout option there.
- Select a timeout option on the When plugged in, put my device to sleep after drop-down menu.
How to Remove the Lock Screen Network Icon on Windows 11
The network icon on Windows 11’s lock screen might seem a rather pointless addition to it. However, there isn’t a built-in option for removing that icon. Nevertheless, you can still get rid of the lock screen’s network icon with the freeware WinAero Tweaker customization app for Windows as follows.
- Visit the WinAero Tweaker’s download page in your fave browser.
- Click Download WinAero Tweaker to save its ZIP file to a folder.
- Bring up File Explorer’s window by clicking the folder taskbar icon for it.
- Open the folder you downloaded WinAero Tweaker’s ZIP to, and select the program’s ZIP archive.

Press File Explorer’s Extract all button.
- Click Browse to choose a path to extract the ZIP to (or you can stick with the default location).

Select the checkbox for the Show extracted files when complete option.
- Click the Extract button.
- Double-click WinaeroTweaker-1.33.0.0-setup within the extracted folder to install the software. The version numbers at the end may be different when you download the file.
- Open the WinAero Tweaker window.
- Double-click the Boot and Logon category to expand its options.

Then select the Network icon on Lock Screen option shown directly below.
- Click Disable the Network icon on Lock Screen checkbox to select it.
- Press the Sign out now button within WinAero Tweaker. Thereafter, your lock screen will no longer include the network icon.
WinAero Tweaker also includes a few other lock screen customization settings that are worth noting. For instance, you can configure how long a lock screen’s picture slideshow plays, in seconds, with the Lock Screen Slideshow Duration setting. Click that option on the left of WinAero Tweaker, and enter a slideshow time in seconds within the Lock Screen Slideshow Duration box.
WinAero Tweaker enables you to save Windows Spotlight images for the lock screen to your hard drive. So, you can save the ones you like for custom lock screen slideshows. To save the current Windows Spotlight photo, click Find Lock Screen Images. Then select the Get this one option for the landscape orientation.
You can even disable the lock screen entirely with WinAero Tweaker. To do that, select Disable Lock Screen on the left side of its window. Then select the Disable Lock Screen checkbox, and press the Sign out button.
Customize Windows 11’s Lock Screen to Suit You Better
So, you don’t have to stick with the default Windows 11 lock screen. Windows 11 might not include a huge number of lock screen customization options, but you can still change its background wallpaper and apps via Settings. WinAero Tweaker also provides some useful additional settings with which to configure the lock screen.
