Openshell windows 10 skin

Fluent-Metro

For Open-Shell Menu

A modern, highly customizable skin for Open-Shell, made for Windows 10.

Old and pre-release versions are available here.

What is Fluent-Metro?

This skin brings a refreshed look and full customization to Open-Shell Menu. It uses updated design elements with transparency and depth, following the design of Windows 10.

Features include:

  • Automatic color scheme with light/dark modes
  • Customizable text and background colors
  • Various options for padding and layout sizes
  • Updated iconography and scalability of menu elements

Installation

Fluent-Metro is designed for Windows 10. It is incompatible with Windows 7 and 8.

You first need to install Open-Shell. Open-Shell is a highly regarded Start menu replacement for Windows used by many enthusiasts. During installation, you can choose to exclude the Explorer and IE integration, as it is not necessary for the Start menu feature.

To install, copy the Fluent-Metro.skin and .skin7 files into C:\Program Files\Open-Shell\Skins so the skin is recognized by Open-Shell. Next, navigate to the «Skins» tab, and from the dropdown, choose Fluent-Metro (the name may vary on pre-release versions).

(Optional) To enable the Tile interface, select Backup -> Load from XML File... and select the XML file from the downloaded release. (Make sure to unzip!)

And Voilà! The new interface will be applied on launch of the Start menu. You can further change the links for the tiles under «Customize Start Menu.»

Tiles

If you notice that the menu looks off-color, set the Menu glass color to #858585 in Open-Shell Settings (under «Menu Look»). This will prevent your accent color from bleeding into the menu background.

Have any questions? Feel free to make a post in discussions.

Configurations

Options

Fluent-Metro provides a variety of customization to get the menu looking exactly how you want. If you need clarification about what an option does, you can hover over the item for a description. If an option is incompatible with another, it will be disabled. If you notice an issue with an option, please file a bug report. Options will be expanded and improved upon as updates are released.

Scripts and Resources

Resources for skinning are available in the Fluent-Metro skin files. If you would like to make changes to the skin(s), download the .skin/.skin7 from the release page and open it with Resource Hacker (or equivalent). If you want to make changes to part of the script, check out the Open-Shell skinning tutorial.

Future development

There are not currently any major plans for the development of Fluent-Metro, however all updates will be posted in the discussions area.

Windows 10

Open Shell

Open Shell

Open Shell

  8. Если вы хотите вернуть обычное меню по правому клику (то, которое стандартно появляется в Windows 10), в настройках программы отметьте Show All Settings, а затем на вкладке «Controls» отметьте пункт «Right click opens Win+X menu».

Open Shell

Open-Shell Menu.

I slightly modified the Vistalike (http://www.classicshell.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5655) skin to have a more accurate All Programs button font. Demo on Windows 10 21H2:

VISTALIKE PowerButton Fix RevD.skin7 (1.82 MB)
Vista Menu.xml (3.12 KB) (Config file for a accurate Vista look)
Credit to juniper7 on the Classic Shell Forums for the original start menu skin.

We haven’t had an update for Open Shell since like what April 2023 and it’s very concerning. Though that start menu does look nice however.

Oh yes your right, do you understand what’s happening with that? The latest version is 4.4.191.

There’s so much I think could be done. The actual code for the start menu could be improved so get the menus closer to original. For instance in XP theme should be able to have the fonts in the upper part different from the lower, like in XP they are bold in the top part and not bold in the bottom. Also a change to make it easier to put the power and log off buttons on the bottom. Also a way to customise all the folder icons in the Programs tree.

For the Explorer, an option to have the history on the back and forward buttons like it is in Windows.
Perhaps also a movable address bar that can be configured to be breadcrumbs or not.
I would love a pane for the folder pane that could be customised to be like XP or similar or put a search program in there.

Perfect intregration with Retrobar would be good too.

Are you talking on the right thread?

Yeah it was a reply to NanamiMadobe’s suggestion that we hadn’t had an Open Shell update since April 2023 and your reply that it was August 2023.
I was suggesting things that could be done to improve Open Shell in future updates.
I agree, not the right thread.

How so? Are you worried that it won’t work with the newest Windows updates and it won’t be fixed.
There’s still things I’d like to see implemented. I am not too great at coding so don’t know how to work on it myself.

For anyone who wants it as well, here is a ZIP that contains start buttons ripped from Windows Vista’s Aero theme.
files.catbox.moe/vv0hpa.zip
You can use it with Open-Shell or SIB.

Does anyone know how to modify the skin to have bold text on pinned programs like actual Vista did it?

I’m pretty sure that’s impossible, however, you could use Retro-Shell, a fork of Open-Shell that I’m pretty sure replicates this behavior. I don’t have a link, but I’m sure it’s not hard to find. You wouldn’t be able to use this skin for it, though. You’d have to find a modified version.

Retro-Shell breaks Vistalike, unfortunately.

Please refer to this post (and previous ones, for more info): winclassic.net/post/29568/thread, albeit it’s somewhat inaccurate (if you can live with that).

Just copy those texts (or here: 𝐈𝗻𝐭𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝐭, 𝗘-𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹), and it should always work since they’re Unicode.
