Usually, the recommended method is to perform an in-place upgrade using Windows Update, but changing the current setup can lead to errors and many other problems due to compatibility issues and custom configurations. A clean install of Windows 10 21H1 minimizes the risks of issues because it deletes everything on the hard drive and sets up a fresh copy of the operating system.

If you have had the same installation for a long time, starting from scratch with a fresh copy of the operating system can improve performance, booting times, memory usage, and resolve existing problems. However, if you are upgrading to the new version, there is an exception. On devices running version 20H2 or 2004, it is not necessary to go through the reinstallation process. Since Windows 10 21H1 is a small update based on version 2004, devices running one of the two most recent releases only need the enablement package to upgrade, which installs quickly like a cumulative update using Windows Update.

You should only use the Media Creation Tool to upgrade from an older version (for example, November 2019 Update) or fix problems with the current setup.

Before diving into the process, you first need to create a USB flash drive with the Media Creation Tool, then start the computer with the bootable media to access the Windows Setup wizard. Also, you have to make sure the device can boot from USB, which means that you may need to adjust the BIOS or UEFI settings. To perform a clean installation of Windows 10 21H1 (May 2021 Update), use these steps:

1. Start your PC with the Windows 10 21H1 USB install media.

5. Click the I don’t have a product key option if you are doing a reinstallation. If Windows 10 was already activated, after the installation, reactivation will happen automatically.

9. Select the Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) option to clean install Windows 10 21H1.

10. Select each partition in the hard drive you want to install Windows 10 and click the Delete button. (Usually, the “Drive 0” is the drive that contains all the installation files.)

    Warning: When you delete a partition, it also deletes all data on the drive. Also, it is not required to delete the partitions from a secondary hard drive.

11. Select the hard drive (Drive 0 Unallocated Space) to install Windows 10 21H1.

12. Click the Next button.

13. After the installation, on the first page of the out-of-the-box experience (OOBE), select your region setting.

14. Click the Yes button.

15. Select your keyboard layout setting.

16. Click the Yes button.

17. Click the Skip button if you do not need to configure a second layout.

18. If the computer is using an Ethernet connection, it will connect to the network automatically. If you have a wireless connection, you will need to set up the connection manually.

19. Select the Set up for personal use option if you are setting Windows 10 Pro. The Home edition does not have this option.

20. Click the Next button.

21. Confirm your Microsoft account email, phone number, or Skype identification to create an account.

22. Click the Next button.

23. Confirm your Microsoft account password.

24. Click the Next button.

25. Click the Create a PIN button.

26. Create a new PIN password.

27. Click the OK button.

28. Confirm your privacy settings that best suits your needs by turning on or off the toggle switch for each setting.

29. Click the Accept button.

30. (Optional) On the “Customize your device” page, select one or more ways you plan to use the device to allow the setup to suggest tools and services customization during this experience.

31. Click the Accept button to continue. Or click the Skip button to skip this part of the setup.

32. Click the Do it later button to skip linking your phone to your PC. (You can always do this from the Settings app.)

33. Click the Next button to allow OneDrive to backup your Desktop, Pictures, and Documents folders to the cloud automatically. Or click the “Only save file to this PC” option to skip this step.

34. Click the No, thanks button to skip the Office 365 setup.

35. Click the Accept button to enable Cortana. (If you want to use the “Hey Cortana” feature, also check the Respond when I say “Hey Cortana” option.)

Once you complete the steps, a clean install of Windows 10 21H1 will be performed on the computer.

6. Hit either ESC, Del, F2 or F12 what your device suggests to proceed with Boot options.
7. Check if Language to install, Time and Currency Format, and Keyboard or input method are correct.
8. Click – Next.
9. Hit – Install now.
10. Provide the digital product key in the specific bar. If you don’t have it, click – I don’t have a product key.
11. Hit the checkbox set before I accept the license terms.
12. Click – Next.
13. Hit – Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
14. Select the drive you inserted click – Next.
15. When a warning pop-up appears, click – OK.
16. The further process is about to happen automatically.
17. Still, be present in front of the PC to follow any prompted instructions.
18. During the process, the PC may restart itself several times as a part of the installation.
19. When the system powers up finally, either put your Microsoft email account, phone, or Skype identification in the given field.
20. Proceed with Set up a PIN option.
21. If you want to turn on Cortana, click – Yes.
22. Set the Privacy settings as you like.
23. Finally, click Accept to finish the process.

Update – You should also choose this – Universal MediaCreationTooL to download or Install Windows 10 Version 21H1.

1. Загрузите обновление в виде CAB-файла

Совет 1: В проводнике файлов, в котором находится CAB-файл, нажмите и удерживайте клавишу Shift (стрелка вверх) и кликните правой кнопкой мыши по CAB-файлу, чтобы сохранить его как путь и скопировать в командную строку.

В полученном пути, удалите обе кавычки, это избавляет вас от необходимости вводить весь путь вручную.

Совет 2: просто переименуйте CAB-файл с длинным именем. Так что вам не нужно печатать длинное имя.

• Right-click over the zip file and choose the option – Extract all.

Your PC keeps checking for any new updates and if it finds any, the same will appear in the form of a notification on the taskbar. Click over this notification, and choose the Restart now option. If you haven’t seen this on your computer, you may check for updates manually as well following the below steps –

• First of all, browse to the location – 

Settings > Update & Security

• Doing so will automatically land you on the Windows Update page.
• Jump to the right page, and click Check for updates.

• The system will then immediately start looking for any pending updates. If there’s indeed any newer version available that is compatible with your device, the system automatically starts downloading the essential files.

• When the downloading completes, hit Restart now.

That’s the reason why it has become one of the convenient ways to download and install the compatible operating system on your device. Doing so not only saves a huge data loss but also the time lost while trying to download files time and again. Here’s how to use this tool –

• Plugin a USB flash drive to your device.
• Visit Rufus’ official site to download its latest version. We suggest downloading the portable one so that you don’t need to install this software. 
• When the downloading finishes, double-click over the rufus_Setup file. 
• If the user account control window prompts, hit Yes.
• A pop-up window should appear next asking to “allow Rufus to check for application updates online“, press Yes.
• Under the Boot selection, select “Download” using the drop-down menu.
• Click the download button again so that Rufus runs the “download script”.

• Select Windows 10 version, and hit Continue.
• Choose the following options carefully – Release, Edition, Language, and Architecture. You must hit the continue button after making a selection. In the end, tick the box – “Download using a browser”, and hit the download button.

Note: Make sure to keep your device connected to the internet, otherwise, you need to redo the above steps.

• Select MBR/GPT (check in advance what they mean) under the partition scheme. Opting MBR will generate BIOS under the Target system whereas GPT will change this to UEFI (non-CSM).
