Между анонсом и релизом последних моделей у Nokia проходит все меньше времени. Показанная в декабре Lumia 620 уже появилась в продаже, спустя всего один месяц. Аппарат стал самым доступным в России (11 990 рублей на старте) Windows Phone 8 смартфоном, предлагая при этом современную начинку, не сильно отличающуюся от флагманов, интересный дизайн и очень компактный корпус за счет минимальной рамки экрана.

От ближайшей альтернативы HTC 8S модель отличает чуть меньший размер экрана (3,8 дюйма), но при этом вдвое больший объем встроенной памяти (8 ГБ), наличие фронтальной камеры, компактные габариты, сменные панели и кое-что другое. Вкратце, Lumia 620 получается очень сбалансированным смартфоном за вполне адекватные деньги и, наверное, идеальным вариантом для первого знакомства с ОС Windows Phone 8.

Дизайн, удобство

В дизайне Lumia 620 нет заимствования из флагманских аппаратов, которые обладают преемственностью на протяжении уже двух поколений. Внешний вид 620-й свежий, оттого необычный. Первое, на что обращаешь внимание, — смартфон очень маленький. Рамка экрана минимальна, отступ от верхнего края — также, за счет этого Lumia 620 выглядит компактнее конкурентов, размеры полностью повторяют iPhone 4S с меньшим размером экрана.

Все торцы за счет задней панели скруглены, аппарат отлично ложится в руку, в карман брюк, и, если в случае с Lumia 920 острые углы не всегда комфортны, тут ситуация полностью противоположна.

Цветовое разнообразие даже богаче, чем у старших Lumia 920 и 820: есть очень красивый голубой матовый цвет, как у первых Lumia 800 год назад, а также салатовый, самый яркий цвет в линейке. Панели — фишка Lumia 620, они не несут в себе различную функциональность (как защищенные или с поддержкой беспроводной зарядки у 820-й), зато применена необычная технология окраски.

Процитирую официальный блог Nokia Conversations в России: при изготовлении панелей добавляется второй слой цветного, прозрачного или просвечивающего поликарбоната поверх основного слоя, с помощью чего можно получить дополнительную цветовую палитру и добиться визуального эффекта глубины. На фото это видно не так хорошо, но примерное представление получить можно. Например, надпись Nokia как бы парит на поверхности прозрачного слоя. Особенно эффект выражен в глянцевых панелях, в частности, салатового цвета.

Мне больше нравятся матовые варианты — белый, черный, желтый, хорошо смотрится голубой. Всего в продаже будет 7 цветных панелей, неплохой выбор. Тут панели меняются не так тяжело, как в Lumia 820: достаточно упереться в модуль камеры и потянуть края панели.

Сами панели громоздкие: без них смартфоны выглядят и вовсе миниатюрными. Зато панели отлично защищают аппарат, так как закрывают и заднюю поверхность, и боковые торцы.

По элементам — типичный набор. Динамик находится в нижнем торце на задней поверхности, на торцах — кнопки регулировки громкости, блокировки и камеры, снизу — microUSB без заглушки, сверху — 3,5 мм мини-джек под наушники.

Аппаратная платформа

Флагманские Windows Phone 8 смартфоны основаны на платформе Qualcomm Snapdragon четвертого поколения MSM8960 Krait, а в недорогой Nokia Lumia 620 используется младший из этого семейства, MSM8627 более слабым графическим ускорителем, Adreno 305, хотя визуально я не заметил никакой разницы в работе. В сочетании с не самым высоким разрешением экрана скорость работы Lumia 620 идеальна, аппарат не тормозит ни в каких ситуациях.

Прочие показатели скоромнее: 512 МБ оперативной памяти, 8 ГБ встроенного массива (из которых доступно около 5 ГБ), есть слот для карт памяти MicroSD. В остальном привычный набор. Имеется Wi-Fi a/b/g/n с функцией точки доступа, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, модуль NFC. Модуль LTE и возможность беспроводной зарядки отсутствуют.

Время работы

В Nokia Lumia 620 не самый емкий аккумулятор, 1300 мА*ч. Это значительно меньше, чем в Lumia 920 и даже у главного конкурента, HTC 8S (1700 мА*ч), так что я рассчитывал на скромные показатели автономности. Но в реальности время работы смартфона вполне на уровне других моделей, сказывается чуть заниженная частота процессора, не самый мощный видеоускоритель.

Если выключить большинство автосинхронизаций (почтовые ящики, социальные сети, мессенджеры), не так часто использовать смартфон для навигации, прослушивания музыки, то можно добиться двух дней работы.

Но в целом стоит понимать, что смартфон нужен для полноценного использования, а не постоянной экономии энергии, так что в Windows Phone 8 время работы в среднем равняется одним суткам.

Камера

Камера в Lumia 620 простая, 5 МП, качество съемки вполне обычное. Она подходит для дневной съемки, в ночное время сильно повышаются шумы.

Из дополнительных функций камеры отмечу возможность создавать динамичные фотографии (делая серию снимков и складывая их в один), анализировать объекты в кадре и убирать их (например, проходящих не вовремя людей). Демонстрация этого процесса есть в видеообзоре Lumia 920, не вижу смысла повторяться.

Особенно полезна для меня функция интеллектуальной съемки, когда можно убрать какой-то случайный объект из кадра, но вот интеграция не радует. Если вы снимаете в приложении камеры, возможности использования интеллектуальной съемки просто нет, так что всегда нужно снимать в отдельном приложении, а это неудобно и не нужно. В итоге получаем странную реализацию, когда отличная задумка разбивается об ограничения системы Windows Phone. Почему бы не сделать такой режим прямо в приложении камеры?

Интерфейс

Интерфейс WP8 одинаков от устройства к устройству, в Lumia 620 он такой же, как в 920-й и 820-й моделях. На экране блокировки появилась погода, крупные часы, уведомления, а также «живые приложения», например, Facebook — показываются фото, статусы, в зависимости от того, как вы эти самые живые приложения настроите.

За пределами экрана блокировки — привычный рабочий слот с живыми плитками (live tiles). Теперь размер плиток можно изменять, сделать их на всю ширину экрана (например, удобно для календаря) или уменьшить до размера иконок (например, для сообщений, ярлыков приложений).

Главное меню, офисный пакет Microsoft Office, встроенный браузер Internet Explorer 10, Skype абсолютно одинаковы, предлагаю посмотреть видео работы интерфейса WP8, оно скажет больше, чем текст.

Мультимедийные возможности

Во всех смартфонах Nokia на Windows Phone 8 есть приложение Музыка Nokia, это собственный плеер со встроенным магазином, а также очень интересным пунктом «Микс Радио». Он дает доступ к большой базе лицензионной музыки, из которой можно формировать собственные «миксы» или использовать десятки уже составленных миксов по категориям, прослушивая их потом на протяжении одного месяца, естественно, бесплатно. Скачиваете микс или несколько (выбор жанров тут очень широк, смотрите скриншоты) и слушаете их без подключения к сети в дороге.

«Миксы» можно регулярно обновлять, тут нет никаких ограничений. Единственное — переключать композиции можно не более 6 раз за час. Вместо миксов можно прослушивать и похожие на ваш плей-лист композиции: в пункте «Создать» вбить, например, «Infected Mushroom», и программа предложит набор похожих исполнителей, композиций. Удобно.

Плеер остался похожим на то, что было, он вполне функционален и красив, однако добавились эквалайзеры. Это, кстати, достижение Nokia, в других Windows Phone эквалайзеров нет. Качество звука очень хорошее, тут также имеется надстройка Dolby Mobile для объемного звучания, по громкости все более чем хорошо. Аппарат вполне неплох в качестве замены плееру, правда, до лидеров (например, iPhone или N9) он немного не дотягивает.

Тут же стоит сказать, что смартфоны на Windows Phone 8 поддерживают неконвертированное видео. Для просмотра фильмов в AVI и других распространенных форматах не нужен Zune, просто копируете фильм в папку при подключении по USB, и он конвертируется стандартными средствами Windows (пусть это и занимает довольно долгое время).

Такими же способами копируется музыка, фото, видео, подключение реализовано по протоколу MTP, то есть точно так же, как в последних версиях Android. Полного доступа к файловой системе нет, но он и не нужен после таких поблажек в плане трансфера мультимедийных файлов.

Книги Nokia. Программа Nokia Reading (или Книги Nokia) была анонсирована на MWC 2012 в Барселоне в марте прошлого года, она доступна и на новых моделях на Windows Phone 8. Нетрудно догадаться, что это своеобразный книжный магазин, где можно приобрести книги для чтения на смартфоне. Интерфейс очень приятный, книги рассортированы по категориям, выбор очень богатый, есть все — от детективов Дарьи Донцовой до фантастики Гарри Гаррисона.

Цены вы видите, на мой взгляд, они вполне оправданы. 40—60 рублей за книгу — вполне обычная практика, деловая литература обойдется, естественно, дороже, но опять же в рамках разумного. Самые высокие цены в магазине — 300 рублей — за новые специализированные книги и учебники.

Что касается самой программы для чтения, то тут полный порядок — есть настройка яркости, ночной режим, страницы листаются горизонтально, плюс книгу можно вынести на рабочий стол в виде живого тайтла.

Навигация — одно из главных конкурентных преимуществ Nokia еще в эру Symbian, а сейчас все функции доведенной до ума навигации перенесены в систему Windows Phone 8. Так, тут есть возможность прямо с устройства загружать карты любого города или страны по Wi-Fi, языки для голосового сопровождения, отлично реализованы поиск и переключение между результатами, подробные инструкции для движения. В WP8 оффлайновым стал не только Навигатор, но и карты, база карт для двух приложений используется одна.

Загрузили карту на устройство, и смартфон больше не обращается к интернету, как происходит при пользовании теми же Google Maps и альтернативами. Повторю еще раз, это максимально важно в роуминге, для часто путешествующих людей. Для ориентации не нужна местная SIM-карта, карта уже есть в смартфоне. Конечно, скорость первого позиционирования намного меньше, как и точность (время холодного старта составляет около 5 минут), так как в этом случае не производится ориентирование по сотовым вышкам операторов связи (A-GPS).

В Картах Nokia есть информация о движении общественного транспорта — на карты наложена схема метро, а также линии движения троллейбусов, трамваев и пр., карты (предоставляются Navteq, дочерней компанией Nokia) подробные, присутствует и пробочный сервис в России. В наличии три стандартных вида отображения: 2D-карта, 3D, а также вид со спутника, есть отображение ориентиров (точек POI). Номеров на картах нет (это касается некоторых стран Европы, в России с номерами все в порядке), это минус программы. Уверен, что это зависит от региона и типа карт, и радует, что Россия в списке присутствует.

Особый упор делается на дополненную реальность. Приложение называется Nokia Город, вы выбираете одну из категорий (еда, отели, достопримечательности, транспорт и так далее), и при помощи компаса и GPS-позиционирования ПО смартфона идентифицирует названия магазинов, ресторанов, станций метро и прочего и показывает всю информацию о них, включая телефоны.

В России эта функция работает, но база POI мала, так что и результатов иногда просто нет. Достопримечательности, например, отображаются исключительно иностранные, расположенные за тысячи километров.

Сравнение с HTC Windows Phone 8S

Смартфоны от Nokia и HTC во многом похожи. Мне нравится и внешность 8S, заимствованная от флагманского HTC 8X: скошенные торцы и прямые углы, комбинированные расцветки смотрятся отлично. Lumia 620 выглядит совсем иначе, линии плавные, а размер телефона заметно меньше. Пожалуй, вживую именно Lumia 620 выглядит оригинальнее, хотя дизайн — дело субъективное, судить не буду.

Технические характеристики устройств сравнимы. Начнем с экрана. Обе модели имеют одинаковое разрешение 800 х 480 точек, выполнены по TFT-технологии, размер дисплея HTC чуть больше, 4 дюйма против 3,8 у Nokia.

Nokia обладает поляризационным слоем ClearBlack, за счет чего больше углы обзора, лучше поведение на солнце. Я сравнил экраны на максимальной яркости в темноте. При фронтальном положении они сопоставимы (чуть отличается цветопередача), при наклоне краски HTC заметно выцветают.

Вдобавок к вышесказанному, экран протестировал эксперт редакции Михаил Кузнецов. Вот его мнение по поводу дисплея Nokia Lumia 620:

Экран смартфона Nokia стал приятной неожиданностью. Как справедливо было замечено, у него хорошая устойчивость к бликам и отличные углы обзора. Что касается технических характеристик, то они говорят сами за себя.

Запас яркости высокий — до 596 кд/м², это даже чуть выше, чем яркость экрана iPhone 5, который до этого был самым ярким в наших тестах! Контрастность ни капли не подвела — 1050:1, опять же, на уровне лучших мобильных ЖК-дисплеев. В сумме с хорошим антибликом картинка обладает приятным эффектом объема даже при ярком свете, например, на улице.

Настройка гаммы выглядит адекватно. Небольшая нелинейность допустима для экрана смартфона, тем более не самого дорогого. Среднее значение — 2,05, вполне приемлемый результат, не такой уж далекий от желаемого эталона 2,2.

Баланс белого достаточно линейный, цветовая температура в среднем составляет 5500K из-за равномерного недостатка синей компоненты. Как это вылядит на практике? Белый цвет и оттенки серого имеют заметную бежеватую примесь, но благодаря ровному балансу, она совершенно не мешает наслаждаться изображением. Главное, что баланс выдержан без перепадов.

Цветовой охват оказался смещен относительно эталонных значений sRGB, зато об урезанности говорить не приходится. Красный цвет на своем законном месте, лишь синий и зеленый смещены по оттенку. Тем не менее насыщенность на адекватном уровне, и цвета выглядят на экране Nokia Lumia 620 в меру естественно.

Судя по полученным результатам, у экрана Nokia Lumia 620 очень достойные характеристики и вполне адекватная настройка. Что еще важнее — это достаточно недорогой смартфон, и его экран превосходно смотрится в своей ценовой категории. А что до низкого разрешения — скажем так, это вопрос довольно субъективный. Да, HD-смартфоны выглядят четче, но если не всматриваться в экран, дискомфорта это не вызывает, мне бы хватило для повседневного использования. И если низкое разрешение я заметил не сразу, то отличная яркость, контрастность и цветопередача сразу бросились в глаза.

Основные камеры у аппаратов одинаковые, 5 Мп с автофокусом и вспышкой, по показателям памяти Lumia 620 впереди: 8 ГБ встроенной памяти против 4 ГБ у HTC. Объем RAM одинаковый, 512 МБ.

Преимущество Lumia 620 и в камере: тут имеется фронтальная камера для видеовызовов, у HTC ее нет. Зато HTC 8S обладает большей емкостью аккумулятора, 1700 мА*ч против 1300 мА*ч у Nokia. Тут же скажу, что в Lumia 620 dual-band Wi-Fi и 4 диапазона 3G против 2-х у HTC. Кстати, это первые смартфоны, у которых есть опция сохранения Wi-Fi включенным при неактивном экране. Почему-то в других Windows Phone аппаратах она пока что не активирована.

В итоге я не могу сказать, какой из смартфонов однозначно предпочтительнее по аппаратным характеристикам. Функционально чуть лучше Nokia за счет камеры, объема памяти, зато HTC чуть тоньше (10,3 мм против 11) и обладает более емким аккумулятором. Но тут стоит вспомнить о программной части: фирменные сервисы Nokia (особенно навигация, приложения Nokia Транспорт, Книги, Музыка и Микс Радио, приложения для работы с камерой — такие же, как во флагманской Lumia 920) делают использование аскетичных Windows Phone смартфонов намного приятнее.

Как я писал, у Nokia получился отличный аппарат среднего сегмента. Вживую дизайн, внешний вид и идея с окраской панелей смотрятся классно, на фоне конкурентов за те же деньги смартфон выделяется, и сильно. Для любителей классики в наличии и спокойные черные и белые панели. Мне понравились размеры смартфона, при минимальной рамке экрана Lumia 620 — один из самых компактных аппаратов последнего времени.

Ну и радует, что в недорогом смартфоне сохранены почти все программные фишки старших моделей Lumia: фирменные сервисы с полноценной оффлайновой навигацией, в том числе и на общественном транспорте, приложения для съемки, чтения книг, музыкальные сервисы с эквалайзерами (их нет у других WP8-устройств) и так далее. И если Lumia 820 получилась довольно дорогой для экрана 800 х 480 точек, то такое разрешение в смартфоне среднего класса смотрится вполне нормально. Думаю, Lumia 620 имеет все шансы на хорошие продажи, давно не было такого приятного внешне, компактного и при этом доступного смартфона.

Стильный мобильный телефон Nokia Lumia 620, относящийся к классическим моноблокам. Его удобно держать в ладони за счет специальной формы. Можно пользоваться одной рукой. Устройство отличается компактными размерами и не занимает много свободного места. В качестве основного материала применяется прочный и долговечный пластик. Он надежен и долговечен. Материал устойчив к появлению царапин и прочих мелких повреждений. В целом получилась универсальная модель рассчитана в большей степени на молодежный сегмент потребителей. На тыльной стороне гаджета в нижней части размещается прорезь динамика. Она закрыта специальной сеткой для защиты от проникновения пыли и влаги. Качество звука отличное и не вызывает нареканий. Даже на шумной улице отлично слышно собеседника без помех. На левой боковой грани кнопок управления нет. Все они размещены с правой стороны. Это спаренная клавиша для регулировки уровня громкости, блокировка дисплея, кнопка для запуска съемки. Нажимаются легко без посторонних звуков. На верхней грани устройства размещается разъем для подключения гарнитуры.

На нижнем торце мобильного телефона Нокиа Люмия 620 можно найти микроюсб разъем. Его можно использовать для подключения зарядного устройства. На лицевой стороне гаджета в верхней части телефона можно найти фронтальную камеру. Она служит для организации видеозвонка при общении по телефону. Рядом размещается датчик освещения. Позволяет в автоматическом режиме выполнять регулировку яркости экрана. Дает возможность экономно расходовать энергию аккумуляторной батареи. Под дисплеем телефона Люмия 620 размещается блок функциональных кнопок. Для них предусмотрена подсветка. Непосредственно вокруг экрана находиться специальный бортик. Он служит для защиты его от повреждений когда он лежит экраном вниз.

The Nokia Lumia 620 is an entry-level smartphone designed, developed and marketed by Nokia. It is the successor to the Lumia 610, and is one of the first Nokia phones to implement Windows Phone 8 alongside the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820. Although sharing a similar name with the Lumia 610, the Lumia 620 is a major overhaul over its predecessor, employing a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor. It also has exchangeable back covers which come in black, white, magenta, yellow, cyan etc.^[3]

It was announced in December 2012 and started selling in January 2013 in Asia, followed by Europe and the Middle East at an estimated street price of US$249.^[4] In the United States, the Nokia Lumia 620 is available for AT&T’s subsidiary brand Aio Wireless.

Like other Lumia devices with Windows Phone 8, Nokia adds these applications: HERE Drive+, HERE Maps, HERE City Lens, Nokia Mix Radio (select markets), Nokia Smartshoot, Nokia Cinemagraph.^[5] With subsequent Nokia Amber and Nokia Black updates, they added Nokia Camera, Nokia Glance, Glance Background, Storage Check, Data Sense and several other minor enhancements which were supplied by Microsoft as part of their general distribution release.

Because of the limited memory available on this phone, certain applications and features will not be able to run.^[6]^[7]

On July 23, 2013, a variant of the Nokia Lumia 620, the Nokia Lumia 625, was released with a bigger display, 4G support, faster processor, larger battery and 1080p video recording. However, this model lacks certain features like Nokia Glance and some sensors for which it lacks the ability to run applications including Nokia City Lens^[8]

Along with Lumia 810 and 928, this model will not get the FM Radio support upon updating to Windows Phone «Amber».^[9] Reasons range from the model not having the FM radio chip^[10] to the design of the casing (and earphone plug) not supporting the connection for the antenna required.^[11]

The Lumia 620 comes with a 3.8-inch capacitive touchscreen LCD display. It is powered by a dual-core 1.0 GHz Krait Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and has 512 MB of RAM. The phone has 8 GB of internal storage that can be expanded using MicroSD cards up to 64 GB.

The Lumia 620 has a 1300 mAh Li-ion battery, 5-megapixel rear camera and VGA front-facing camera. It is available in lime green, orange, magenta, yellow, cyan, white and black.^[12]

The Lumia 620 comes with Windows Phone 8 and is upgradeable to Windows Phone 8.1.

Engadget reviewed the phone very positively. It praised its battery life, performance, and value for money. It noted that the camera was not very good, but okay considering that the 620 is a budget phone.^[13]

James Rogerson of TechRadar in his review wrote: «There’s not a whole lot that the Nokia Lumia 620 does wrong. As an all-round, jack of all trades budget handset it does a great job. We’d love it if the screen was slightly bigger or it had a little bit more RAM, but for the price we can’t really complain. The only real issue is the battery, and that’s an issue to some extent with every Windows Phone 8 right now.»^[14]

The Nokia Lumia 620, a modestly priced entry-level Windows Phones, represents one of the best value devices we’ve encountered yet on the platform. The 620 replaces the Lumia 610, a device that went on sale last year and now runs Windows Phone 7.8. But in our opinion, the value impact of the 620 is leaps and bounds higher than its predecessor.

Make no mistake, this is an entry-level device that is not meant to rival the 800/900 series of Lumia Windows Phones. But also know this: it is one cool device and we’re having a hard time putting it down.

Nokia has a winner on hand with the Lumia 620. It has some high-end features in a compact, exciting and nimble body. Although it’s an entry-level phone, it raises the bar for quality and could give Nokia a much needed boost. An excellent choice for teens, adults who want no fuss but quality or enthusiasts who want a ‘weekend phone’.

The Body

The Lumia 620 clearly borrows heavily from its bigger brother, the Lumia 820. Both have “shell” cases that wrap around the back and sides of the device, allowing one to pop it off to swap out the 1300mAh battery, microSIM or add a microSD (up to 64GB).

Weighing in at just 127 g (4.5 oz) it is significantly lighter than the Lumia 920 which is at a hefty 185 g (6.5 oz). That’s not to say it’s especially thin because it’s not—in fact it’s just as thick as the 920 just smaller. But it’s a comfortable, ergonomic design that doesn’t feel cheap.

Due to the Lumia 620 only having a 3.8” display, it is easily one of the tiniest phones we’ve used recently. That’s not a bad thing, mind you. Not everyone needs to or wants to stare at their phone for extended durations and some just want a phone that makes calls and good some “smart things”. It should also be pointed out that the original Lumia 800 also had a 3.8” display and that phone had quite a few fans as well.

Speaking of fans, the Lumia 620 has won numerous accolades from Windows Phone admirers due to its bold, colorful design. Coming in two toned colors (what Nokia calls «Dual Shot» where two colors are layered on top of each other) it is supposed to create «depth effects» and «textures.»

Marketing language aside it is certainly eye catching. With colors ranging from white, matte black, blue, yellow, red and the popular lime green/yellow, the aesthetic matches the Windows Phone OS perfectly. We’ve heard some dismiss the more bright colors as making the phone look “toy like” but for those users, opting for the more traditional black will solve that critique. Personally, we love the lime green/yellow and are sticking with it—it’s just fun looking.

No word if Nokia will sell the shells separately, allowing you to changes colors at will but hopefully they will.

Overall, the smooth, cool-to-the-touch plastic shell, pocketable size and quality materials (such as the ceramic buttons) make the Lumia 620 a fine little device—at least on the outside.

The Display

In 2013, it’s hard to get excited about an 800×480 TFT LCD display—having said that as far as entry level displays go the Lumia 620 is a tremendous improvement over the washed out Lumia 610. If we had to make a direct comparison, it’s like Nokia took the display from last year’s Lumia 710 and tossed that into the 620. And yes, we mean that because it also includes Nokia’s famed ClearBlack polarizing display technology, which filters out certain wavelengths of light to give deeper, richer colors with a low-reflectivity. It works.

Sure the Lumia 620 lacks PureMotion aka the 60 Hz refresh rate found in the Lumia 920 and Corning’s Gorilla Glass, but for less than $300 you’re getting a sharp screen with rich, vibrant colors. The colors are not oversaturated like those found in AMOLED displays and at 3.8” you are still getting a modest 245PPI.

The Lumia 620 also omits the Super Sensitive Touch technology from the Lumia 920, which means you’ll need to pull your gloves off to use the touchscreen on a cold day. But it does include Nokia’s “Sunlight readability” option whereby the display ramps up way past “max”, giving users a temporary reprieve from the harsh light on their display. That is a very useful feature and it’s great to see it included here.

As far as screen sensitivity goes, it’s certainly usable but you do feel it requiring a little more effort than the more high-end devices. It’s not bad but you can feel slight performance degradation here but that’s more a nit than complaint.

In short, it’s obvious that last year’s mid-range technology is now this year’s entry-level and it’s kind of awesome. For a “cheap phone” the Lumia 620 does not compromise on the display and in fact, offers more than what its competitors can offer due to the patented Nokia technology on board.

The Hardware

Powered by a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU, the Lumia 620 is certainly on the low end when it comes to horsepower. Whereas most Windows Phone 8 devices opt for the more powerful 1.5GHz dual-core variant, Nokia has presumably shaved some cost off of the device here with a speed reduction. Does it matter? In practical terms, no. It’s certainly noticeable when you put it side-by-side with a 1.5GHz machine but when it comes to using it in isolation the little green phone feels just fine.

Let’s be clear though: it is slower but it never approaches the point of frustration. Does it handle racing games like Asphalt 5 without stutter? Absolutely. And really that’s all you need to know, you can use the Lumia 620 without pulling your hair out. All apps and games installed and we saw no limitations.

Speaking of, the 620 sports 512MB of RAM unlike the earlier 610, which only had 256MB. That latter spec prevented the device from running certain games and even Skype. With 512MB of RAM, any software barriers have vanished. Once again, not much to say here as the phone was able to run every app we threw at it. Case closed.

The phone also sports Microsoft’s tap + send feature, meaning yes this “low end” phone even has NFC on board. Though near-field communication is still nascent, who wouldn’t want to have such hardware built in, especially when Apple couldn’t be bothered with it in the iPhone 5?

Battery wise, the Lumia 620 sports a modest 1300mAh battery which yes, is on the small size. The good news is with a 3.8” display and the efficient Windows Phone 8, it will last you easily a day and a half of modest usage or a full day with more heavy usage. It’s also replaceable so you can always pick up a spare.

Real world tests it edges out most phones of its class. (Rumor also has it that Nokia has some optimizing new firmware that improves performance and battery life in the pipeline). Nokia claims 3G talk time is around 9.9 hours and while our numbers fell below that it was not too far off either.

Sound and Speaker

If we had to give a solid impression of the rear speaker it’d be better than expected. The speaker, located on the lower right on the back of the device, is a little tinny but it makes up for it in clarity, specifically volume and speaker phone. Did we mention how much it cranks? Because this is one of the loudest phones we’ve ever used. It does start to distort at about 24 (out of 30) but yeah, it’s shockingly good for, once again, an entry level device.

We should also mention that the Lumia 620 does feature Dolby Headphones, audio leveling and Nokia’s 7-channel equalizer with 19 presets (including a custom). While these are merely software tweaks for music, it’s the exact same feature set as found on the Nokia flagship Lumia 920.

For phone calls audio clarity was good—not great but not terrible either. Once again, we’re dealing with a device that is less than a Lumia 820 or 920 but being Nokia, even their cost-effective phones still sound quite solid. Same thing here and we found it superior to our Samsung ATIV S.

Otherwise the Lumia 620 sports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, accelerometer, compass but sadly no gyroscope. That latter omission though is not really a big deal as you’ll be hard pressed to notice it missing.

The Camera

Sporting an f/2.4 28MM 5MP rear shooter absent any Carl Zeiss branding the Lumia 620’s camera is certainly nothing amazing. But for daylight shots it’s actually very good—sharp with great color balance and accuracy. In fact it’s probably one of the best 5MP shooters we’ve used, which goes to show you how much these things have evolved over the last few years.

Low light is another story. Things get grainy fast and since this obviously lacks the Lumia 920’s PureView technology, we can’t expect too much. It’ll do in a pinch though and once again, considering this phone’s range the rear camera is above our expectations.

Video is also impressive. It does of course lack the smoothness of the Lumia 920 but once again for accuracy and sharpness, it’s very good outdoors on a sunny day. Inside it of course lacks quite a bit, but Nokia has exceeded our expectations for a sub $300 phone.

The camera has the same setup as Nokia’s other Windows Phone 8 devices, meaning limited selection:

The inclusion of a focus assist light, which acts like a pre-flash allowing the camera to provide enough light to judge appropriate focus, something that Nokia is evidently using on all their modern phones and it’s a nice touch, something that that their competitors do not offer.

Luckily, if you want extra features, you can download and use Nokia’s Cinemagraph (animated GIFs), Panorama and SmartShoot Lenses to augment the camera.

The front facing camera is less impressive being only 640 x 480 pixels but once again, the fact that this phone even has a front facing camera is impressive (HTC’s similar 8S lacks one, for instance). It does the trick though and performs within our expectations.

Finally, the audio recording was superb. Believe it or not this device does sport Nokia’s High Amplitude Audio Capture (HAAC), which basically means the microphones are really good and can capture a wider, more accurate range of sound than their competitors. Though the Lumia 920 has that feature we’re pleasantly surprised to find it on the 620.

The Phone

We’ve already commented a bit on the quality as a phone, but here we’ll go into more detail.

As a phone the Lumia 620 is kind of awesome. The reason we say that is due to its compact size, it fits very nicely in our hand and as a result, feels natural when using it. It was only within the last few years that “giant” smartphones became the norm and one forgets how nice it can be to have such a nimble device.

Audio quality, as previously mentioned, is quite good. We found the sound for phone calls to be reasonably clear and on par with other Nokia phones though less “rich” sounding.

Although the phone lacks “flip to silence”, leaked firmware suggests Nokia is bringing that feature back sooner than later, enhancing the phone experience. Other than that though, it’s your standard Windows Phone software with no advanced call-blocking features as found on Samsung’s offerings.

The Conclusion

The Nokia Lumia 620 is one impressive device. On paper, the specs don’t impress the techo-glitterati but in real life, it should.

For one, Nokia has brought an exceptionally well made Lumia experience to the masses for less than $300 off contract. On top of that, it has also brought with it some unique and borderline high-end features that Nokia’s competitors lack:

Look over that list again. Those are some impressive features for an entry-level device in 2013 on top of it running the latest version of Windows Phone 8 (10211).

We’ll just flat out say it: we love the Lumia 620.

Sure we use our Lumia 920 as our daily driver (it’s the camera, really) but the 620 is right there next to it mostly because it contrasts so nicely. We understand not everyone wants a lime-green phone with bold colors, but take a look at the 620 in matte black and ask yourself would you not want such a tiny weekend phone?

And that’s the odd thing here: smartphones have gone from a two-year cycle to yearly to nearly every six months. Now we’re at the point that some of us are considering a secondary phone due their novelty and low price. Nokia has in effect raised the bar while at the same time lowering the barrier of entry.

Our only regret? No US carrier has announced this little gem. Sure, the 8xx series is nice but in a lot of ways it’s too middle-of-the-ground, whereas the 620 runs in the other direction. T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon…are you listening?

That brings us to our sub-headline, calling the Lumia 620 the Palm Centro of 2013. The Palm Centro was the last Garnet device from Palm before they ascended to webOS and then crashed and burned with HP. [Flashback: Read Dieter Bohn’s review of the Centro from 2007]. It was a remarkable little phone that we personally bought on first sight due to its compactness, low price and feature package. Plus it was adorable.

We more distinctly remember how we signed up no less than ten friends on Sprint’s plan with the Centro being their first smartphone. They all loved it and it gave Palm a temporary rebound in the market as the phone was quickly picked up by numerous carriers, showing we weren’t an anomaly.

The Lumia 620 could be that phone for Nokia. It’s stylish, affordable, compact and powerful. It’s the perfect phone for teenagers, adults who aren’t into smartphones or tech geeks who just want a fun solid device for certain days. Nokia could sell millions of these devices, boosting their bottom line and more importantly, wetting people’s appetites for something more from the company next time around.

We could imagine this phone being given away for free on contract or exceed in the more lucrative pre-paid market that Android dominates right now. The difference here is that the 620 is not a compromise when compared to those craptacular low-end Androids—it’s just a solid, eye catching Windows Phone.

Will carriers respond to the Lumia 620? We’re starting to see significant pick up and even the media is giving the device high praise. A lot will depend whether Nokia can leverage the device into people’s hands, but we think they may have a mini-hit with the Lumia 620 if they can succeed.

The

Nokia Lumia 620 is an important handset for Nokia. It might not be a flagship device, but it has other significance — it is an affordable entry level device, a type of device that for Nokia was long a main source of income, and a type of mass device that people have associated the brand with.

The Lumia 620 is a Windows Phone 8 smartphone for the masses, yet offering additional value in many aspects and different by design. This time again, Nokia is focusing on vibrant colors as the standout feature and it relies on its own Windows Phone apps like the free Nokia Maps and Drive navigation and Nokia Music to differentiate.

But will this be enough to finally get consumers’ interested in Windows Phone? And if it does, can it stand its ground in its own Windows Phones backyard where HTC has conveniently settled with the similar 8S? Read on to find out.

Design:

As has become common with recent Nokias, the Lumia 620 places its design bets on colors. Coming with a selection of easily interchangeable matte and gloss shells, the device can transform itself from lime green to orange, magenta, yellow, cyan, white and black. The colors are all bold and bright, and Nokia is using a new ‘dual-shot’ technology applying a base color layer as the foundation and a different color layer on top (for example yellow base and cyan on top combines for overall lime green) to achieve those vibrant color complexions.

While the casing that engulfs the handset is all plastic, we liked the soft-touch-like feel of the plastic. You’d never mistake the phone for a premium device, but it doesn’t feel cheap either.

Overall, the handset is fun and colorful, usually a thing that speaks well to the younger crowd. It’s got friendly rounded edges, and while it is a bit chubby with its 0.43-inch (11mm) thick body, it’s compact enough not to feel too bulky. Weight comes at the reasonable 4.48oz (127g).

All of the physical buttons of the device are on its right side — the volume rocker on top, the lock key in the middle and the camera shutter button in the bottom. This is a very convenient setup for one handed operation that doesn’t force you into doing unnecessary hand gymnastics to reach the keys.

Screen:

The Lumia 620 features a 3.8-inch ClearBlack LCD display with a WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) resolution. 3.8 inches reads small in comparison to most 4.7 and 5-inch displays on high-end devices, but this smaller size means you can easily operate the phone single-handedly, a luxury those larger phones can’t afford.

Pixel density comes at 246ppi, which in simple terms means that you get plenty of detail and you won’t see any jagged pixels on the screen. It is not just the level of details, though. The ClearBlack technology delivers deep blacks and well saturated colors, and with wide viewing angles the screen is a pleasure to look at. The only slight niggle are the reflections that show up under direct sunlight and make it a bit hard to use the device on a bright sunny day.

Interface and Functionality:

The Lumia 620 is an affordable phone, but still it runs the latest Windows Phone 8. This is good news as WP8 is well polished around the edges. Microsoft doesn’t allow for any modifications to the user interface, so you get the same consistent and smooth experience with the signature Live Tiles across all phones of all brands. In Windows Phone 8, the tiles come in three sizes — small (the new size), medium and large (a screen-wide rectangle). With the arrival of small tiles in Windows Phone 8, you really can fit much more in the home panel, so while you’d still end up with a long list if you have many games and apps, the situation has improved much over previous versions of the platform. The phone performs well throughout with no hiccups, at pleasing lag-free speeds.

And while Nokia cannot differentiate by changing the looks of Windows Phone 8, it does offer some great added value with signature apps like Nokia Maps and Drive with free offline satellite navigation, and a great music player with free Mix Radio music streaming service. All this comes free, while on other platforms you’d need to pay for something similar.

Adding to that the free Microsoft Office that is baked into all Windows Phone devices, you get a fairly solid app package right out of the box.

People hub

Basic functionality is also well covered. What makes Windows Phone stand out is the system-wide deep integration of Facebook and Twitter. Following your friends’ last social updates is effortless in the People hub where both telephony and modern social networking come together. If we had to pick the nits, we’d mention the lack of smart dialing in the contact list as one slight downside.

But even with all those advantages Nokia’s Lumia has, we cannot overlook Windows Phone’s app situation. Microsoft’s operating system brags about having 125,000 apps in its catalog, but the reality of the situation is that many essential apps are missing. Google apps like YouTube and Google Maps are absent, popular services like cloud storage Dropbox don’t have Windows Phone apps, and when it comes to games Microsoft’s platform is way behind Android and iOS.

Processor and Memory:

The Lumia 620 features a fairly solid hardware for its affordable price. With a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor running at 1GHz, Adreno 305 graphics and 512MB of RAM, performance was buttery smooth throughout.

There is still no easy way to benchmark Windows Phone, so we have to resort to browser testing. The Internet Explorer-favorable SunSpider JavaScript benchmark returned a total score of 1,496ms, which is solid and almost on par with even high-end devices like the Samsung Galaxy S III. Clearly, there is a huge gap between the entry-level Lumia and the high-end Galaxy S III, but in the case of JavaScript performance it’s almost gone. If you care about gaming of course, the Lumia 620 will not be able to run the latest shooters and racing titles as a high-end phone. For casual browsing around in the interface though it works perfectly smoothly.

The device comes with 8GB of internal storage that you can expand via microSD by as much as 64GB. The Windows Phone platform itself is fairly heavy taking up nearly 3GB of space, so you are left with just north of 5GB.

Internet and Connectivity:

When it comes to connectivity, the Lumia 620 is well equipped with support for 3G with HSPA at 21.1Mbps, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS.

The phone ships with Internet Explorer 10 which is a fairly solid browser. We found it loaded most pages quickly, but often traditional for-desktop websites slowed it down. It has the standard pinch and double tap controls to zoom in and out, and both worked well. Still, it might be a bit strange at first to have the address bar in the bottom instead of on top, and some slight downsides like having no forward button make us wish the Windows Phone platform offered more choice for browsers.

Near-field communication (NFC) is also on board and you can use this to easily pair compatible accessories like wireless headsets and external speakers. Also, NFC has limited use as a mobile wallet technology.

The device uses a micro SIM card that is neatly housed in a little tray under the battery.

Camera:

The Lumia 620 features a 5-megapixel rear camera with auto-focus and LED flash, capable of recording 720p HD videos. There is also a front-facing VGA camera for video calls.

Given its affordable price, you shouldn’t expect wonders from the 5-megapixel camera on the device. But while it lacks in fine detail and clarity, it delivers with pleasing and true-to-life saturated colors. That is especially true for well-lit scenes where the device performs on par or better than many of its peers. Images also turn out a bit on the soft side.

The 5-megapixel camera is challenged by environments requiring ample dynamic range, where there is a stark contrast between objects in the picture like say a bright sky and darker buildings. The sensor doesn’t handle that particularly well. It also has troubles with noise in under-lit scenes, but that’s all to be expected from a device in this class.

The camera experience is helped by a variety of lens effects (things like Cinemagraph animating parts of videos as GIFs) and settings to tweak including ISO adjustments, scenes and others for those who want to manually control their shots.

The video recorder can’t brag with such a variety in settings, but the captured footage is definitely decent. Among the limited settings in the camera are white balance and choosing whether or not to have continuous auto-focus, and that’s about it.

With such a good looking 3.8-inch display, the Lumia 620 has what it takes to entertain you with videos on the road. The phone supports most popular codecs and plays back Mpeg4, H.264, H.263 and WMV files at 720p with ease.

The built-in music and video hub conveniently stores a history of the content you’ve seen and heard. While there is no built-in YouTube application, MetroTube offers all the functionality of YouTube in an interface that looks native to Windows Phone and is great.

When it comes to music, the Xbox Music Store has pretty much everything you need. Nokia Music is one application that we really love having with its free Mix Radio streaming service. It does pretty much what paid services like Rdio and Pandora do, and it’s a perfect tool for music discovery. We had fun playing songs from the playlists offered, plus you can build your own playlists based on as many as three artists you mention. You can even cache playlists for offline listening. The only downside is that you can only skip not more than 6 songs each hour.

Overall, the music experience on the Lumia 620 is very rich and visual, you get a full-screen background image of the artist in the music player and in Mix Radio you can also see a biography and additional info which we appreciate.

The loudspeaker on the back is really loud which we appreciate but sound gets a bit tinny when you crank it up. The speaker is also strangely positioned in the bottom where usually you hold your hand and can easily accidentally muffle it.

Call quality:

With a dual-mic setup, the handset has noise cancellation and it clears up side noises for an overall pleasing sound quality in calls. Our callers easily recognized the tone of our voice and the only slight complaint was that sounds from the microphone on the Lumia 620 came out a bit tinny. On our side of the line, the earpiece performed well, voices were loud and clear.

Battery life:

Seeing that the Lumia 620 has a paltry 1,300mAh battery we set our expectations for battery life low. Officially, Nokia claims the device’s talk time is 9 h 50 min on 3G or 14 h 40 min on 2G. In reality, the phone easily got us through a day of use and if you tinker less with it, it could be a two-day ride.

We looped a series of videos for 1 hour at medium brightness, starting with a fully charged battery. Push notifications were all active in the background (battery saver mode was off). After an hour, the battery was drained by 17%. If we interpolate this number, the Lumia 620 should be able to play around 5.85 hours of video non-stop which is a fairly good (but not brilliant) achievement.

Conclusion:

The Lumia 620 is a great effort by Nokia all around. It has a standout design that will appeal to many, especially the young, a good (but not perfect) camera for its class supporting 720p HD video capture, and runs on the now more mature Windows Phone 8.

We don’t have any major complaints about the phone and that alone is telling. However, as much as we like Nokia’s effort in the Lumia 620, it faces competition from some equally capable devices.

Even in Nokia’s own Windows Phone backyard, HTC was the first to introduce the

Windows Phone 8S, a very, very similar device at the same price of around $320 in the States, £220 in the UK and 270 euro in Europe that has a well-groomed and thinner body, but lacks a front-facing camera.

And in Android land, there are the similarly priced

Samsung Galaxy S III mini featuring the easily recognizable pebble design and a larger screen, and the

HTC One V with virtually identical specs but outfitted in the typical industrial HTC looks. Both of them have the rock solid Android ecosystem as a backbone.

At this point, it’s a matter of personal preference and measuring up the importance of the ecosystem. If you like Windows Phone’s approach with Live Tiles, deeply integrated social networking and built-in Office, Nokia adds even more value to that with its own apps in a well built device. You wouldn’t regret buying the Lumia 620 in that case. If you care more about the apps and games, though, Android is still much richer. So which one would you take, the red pill or blue pill?
