Multirow patcher quantum nox installer windows

Multi-row tabs and other functions installer FF139 1.9.2

Make sure to repatch the whole Firefox installation with each update to get the lastest FF patching apart from the functionality scripts.

False positives

Some antivirus software are detecting the installers as malware on VT, this is due to the files being created with Pyinstaller, which has had problems of being falsely detected for a while, and there is little that can be done to solve this.

Description:

The installer lets you patch or unpatch Firefox and Firefox nightly to use external Javascript as well as to add multirow, tabs below, or focus tab on hover functions.

Since this version doesn’t offer autoupdates, nor fetches the files online from the repository, each time something breaks with a new Firefox update you will have to download the newest patcher from here and patch the function you want again to overwrite the old files you had with the new ones (or copy the files manually yourself).

The patcher will choose the default profile folder, so if you have more than 1 profile you should go to about:profiles and make sure that the path the patcher selects is the same as the one of the profile that you are currently using.

The first time using the patcher use either the «Firefox» or «Firefox nightly» sections to patch your selected Firefox version. If you use the «Profiles only» section to patch for the first time, only the functions will be copied, but not the actual patch to enable them. You won’t need to choose those again if you are updating from an old version (but you can still use them if you are still patching the default profiles if you want).

Firefox portable

If you are using Firefox Portable, you will need to change the default «Root» and «Profile» paths to the ones of wherever you placed Firefox Portable.
For example, if you placed it in C:\FirefoxPortable, and you are using a 64-bits version, you will have to change the paths to look like:

Firefox:

  • Root: C:\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox64 <- For 32 bits, just remove the 64
  • Profile: C:\FirefoxPortable\Data\Profile

Chocolatey

You can also install this package with the chocolatey package that Pauby created, although I won’t be tracking it for changes (it should technically update the version there as we update it here):

choco install firefox-quantum-nox

See the link of the package for further details on it’s use.

Notes for Linux users

Linux users can run the installer by making the file executable first (either on properties on the context menu of your explorer or using the command line in the console).

Assuming you open the console where the file is:
sudo chmod +x Multirow-Patcher-Quantum-Nox-Installer-Linux-*.elf
You can then run the file from the console using the context menu or typing directly in the console:
./Multirow-Patcher-Quantum-Nox-Installer-Linux-*.elf

Notes for Mac users

Due to Apple’s policies, the installer might get blocked by SIP (System Integrity Protection), and it will just tell you that it could not complete because it had insufficient privileges (even if running from root). The only way around this is to disable SIP temporally.

The installer also might start up slow due to a problem with how it had to be bundled into an .app file (since pyinstaller has issues with them).

For the issue, you can check Pyinstaller Issue #3820 for more details.

Troubleshooting

If you are having issues with any of the files not working, first try the basic troubleshooting steps before opening an issue.

Addons UUID replacer

If you don’t want to manually change every UUID of the addons.css file, you should use this executable.
Make sure your addons are up to date, since addons.css file assume you have the lastest versions.

You can execute it from anywhere, which will download the lastest addons.css file from the repo and install it in your selected profile folder.

For Linux you have to execute it from the terminal.

If you place your addons.css file in the same directory as the executable, it will patch that one instead.

Firefox customizations for a full dark theme, multi-row tabs, custom scrollbar, and other functions.

Since Firefox 69, you have to enable toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets in about:config for userChrome and userContent to be loaded at all as per bug #1541233.

For updates on the development of the extension that will bring all features from this repo to a more user-friendly interface, you can go here

If you only want multirow or any other function that isn’t related to the theme (like tabs below, or focus tab on hover), you can use the installers inside the releases section.

This theme is mainly intended to be used alongside a lightweight theme, and for the stable release of Firefox (This means that while it will most probably work with nightly and ESR for the most part, it may have less support for those versions).
You can use it to fully change the colors of most of firefox UI to dark-gray colors (with #222-#444 colors mostly), including scrollbars, tooltips, sidebar, as well as dialogs. With the files here you can also as remove some context menu options, enable multirow tabs, change the font of the url bar…

If you want to know how to change some colors of the theme, check the wiki.

Last update: 04/03/2021

Files updated:

  • addons.css: Updated Tab session manager addon dark theme. TSM added a built-in dark theme now, but it still has some minor problems (like the buttons that appear on hover of a session, or the flashing of the options window), this update assumes you are already using the built-in dark theme and fixes only the issues with that mode activated.

Pre-Last update: 18/01/2021

Files updated:

  • addons.css: Fixed some dark text on Ublock Origin’s element picker theme.

A note on people looking to replace some Tab Mix Plus features:

You can find some of the basic settings that can be simulated through about:config, some userscripts, and some addons here.

Multirow Tabs and other functions

You can enable multirow tabs as well as other functions using the installer in the releases section, or following the methods explained inside Multirow and other functions folder.

Main browser UI

If you are using Linux or Mac, or want to add some more functionability (like deleting some useless context menu commands), you will have to use the methods described inside one of the 3 main folders of this repository:

Short review of each folder:

  • CSS tweaks: Enables removal of context menu items, multirow bookmarks, changing tab bar position (so that it could be under the bookmarks bar for example).
  • Full dark theme: Gives dark colors to firefox UI, including the scrollbars and the tooltips. Can also change the background image of about:home and the header image used as a persona.
  • Multirow and other functions: You can find the JS files that add extra functionability to Firefox that couldn’t be done with CSS alone.

General sites dark theme

You can find an all-around sites stylesheet that will paint every site you visit dark here. You need Stylus addon to use it.

While it’s not perfect (meaning that you should still use per-site styles for the sites you visit often), it can help to darken most sites when browsing around general sites that you don’t visit often, and thus don’t want/can’t find a specific userstyle for them.

Addon dark themes

You can apply a dark theme to certain addons changing the UUID’s of them inside the addons.css file inside the «Full dark theme» folder (more instructions on how to do that inside the addons file).

Here is a list of the themed addons:

  • Ant Video Downloader
  • Cookie autodelete
  • Download Manager (S3)
  • Forget Me Not
  • History autodelete
  • HTTPS Everywhere
  • Noscript
  • Notifier for Gmail (restartless)
  • Multi-accounts containers
  • OneTab
  • Privacy badger
  • Privacy possum
  • Tab session manager
  • Temporary containers
  • Ublock Origin
  • uMatrix
  • Undo closed tabs button -> Use Undo close tab instead (which is more updated and requires no theming).
  • Viewhance

You might have noticed that we no longer have Lastpass dark theme inside addons.css anymore. This is because at the time that addon was themed, I didn’t know much about it. After some research it seems like Lastpass has had a history of security issues (in 2011, 2015, 2016, and 2017), as well as there being other open source alternatives out there that seem to be more reliable, like Bitwarden (it also has a built-in dark mode) which is available for all major browsers.

The scrollbars

This theme colors scrollbars using userContent.css to give them a basic re-color.

If you want a different style on the scrollbars, you can try using the scrollbars.as.css file inside the Alternative scrollbars folder, which will make the scrollbars look more rounded and will have some sort of «puffy» effect when clicking them.

If instead you just don’t want scrollbars to show at all but keep scrollability, you can do this through userContent.css setting the variable --scrollbars-width to none (should be the first rule on the :root section (almost at the start)), and deleting scrollbars.as.css.

If you aren’t using the userContent provided here for some reason, you can always just add this code to your self-created userContent.css:
*|* {scrollbar-width: none !important}

F.A.Q.

You can find the frequently asked questions in here.

Credits

The original code for the custom scrollbars which we modified here belongs to Arty2, and you can find it here.

The original code for the multirow tabs (the CSS part) was written by Andreicristianpetcu, and you can find it here, or for just the code, here. The fix of multi-row tabs draggability was made by TroudhuK, and you can find the original one here.

The original code for the multirow bookmarks toolbar belongs to the original creator mentioned in this reddit thread, whose code was fixed by jscher2000 to use in our current firefox version.

The fix to be able to theme unread tabs again after FF61 (see bug #1453957 on bugzilla) as mentioned in this reddit thread, was made by moko1960 to use in Firefox 61+.

A fix for multiple tab reordering and another fix for the new tab button to not start a row on its own without a tab on multirow was made by Merci-chao.

The code to be able to edit anonymous content (in our case the scrollbars and tooltips) was created thanks to the efforts of Zeniko, Nichu, and Sporif in the old versions, and Xiaoxiaoflood for the current one.

Special thanks to Messna for noting the class turning into an ID on FF58, and Snwflake for fixing Firefox root folder location on MacOS.

Also thanks to 532910, BelladonnavGF, DallasBelt, Demir-delic, Gitut2007, Hakerdefo, Tkhquang and YiannisNi for noting some issues with the theme, and the requests for new features that extended this project.

  • Any way to enable multiple tab rows in Waterfox G3.0.1 (64-bit)?

*Firefox multiple tab rows (works in 109.01 https://github.com/Izheil/Quantum-Nox-Firefox-Dark-Full-Theme/releases

  • Re-applying custom scrollbar appearance

I’ve been using the QuantumNox dark theme downloaded a year ago, that I’ve been tweaking for personal preferences. However, that’s entirely just been changing values and I would not call myself even a novice at css. Unfortunately, that project has been discontinued and archived, so I cannot ask for support there.

  • update broke window controls placement, userchrome doesn’t seem to be responding to new changes even though my old css is active

Based on my intuition about a common cause leading to problems for many of us, I decided to look into whether any variable values were set within :root in my chrome directory files. Lo and behold, that was my problem. I simply changed every use of the variables to a constant, and everything worked like a charm.I am using Multirow-Patcher-Quantum-Nox-Installer-Windows-1.8.4.exe from https://github.com/Izheil/Quantum-Nox-Firefox-Dark-Full-Theme/releases in order to allow multiple tab rows without losing the ability to reorder tabs. I was able to quickly fix the javascript file created with the scrollable rows option (chrome/MultiRowTab-scrollable.uc.js). My first attempt at fixing the autohide file didn’t work, but I have only spent a few minutes on it so far.

  • After seeing all the FF memes, this had to be said.

  • Why don’t any browsers natively support multi-row tabs?

https://github.com/Izheil/Quantum-Nox-Firefox-Dark-Full-Theme now has a working patch for FF 101, even an installer. Golden.

  • Multi Row Tabs and RestartFirefoxButton_Movable Have Stopped Working Since Firefox Nightly 100

Try version 1.8.3 and clear your startup cache (about:profiles > current profile > local folder > startupcache folder > delete all its contents) after closing FF to restart it.

  • How to disable dark mode?

I simply copied the two lockPref lines postet by Wronschien to my config.js file because I already have js stuff coming along with the Izheil Multi-Row-Tabs: https://github.com/Izheil/Quantum-Nox-Firefox-Dark-Full-Theme/releases which didn’t accept a new autoconfig.js and a firefox.cfg.

I use Quantum Nox theme and there’s a section in the FAQ that could help you:

  • Google had a plan called “Project NERA” to turn the web into a walled garden

  • What We’re Working on in Firefox

Yes! FF PMs and designers seem to HATE user customization, add-ons and power user capabilities. While FF is still the best browser for me (barely), it’s only achieved this by all the alternatives enshittifying and dumb-ifying their browsers even faster than FF. As it is I have to spend significant effort under the hood customizing UserChrome scripts just to maintain minimal usability. (…and thank the heavens for https://github.com/black7375/Firefox-UI-Fix, a regularly maintained, well-curated, all-in-one collection of essential Firefox fixes.)
