LDWin
Link Discovery Client for Windows
Chris Hall 2010-2014 — chall32.blogspot.com
What is Link Discovery?
Link discovery is the process of ascertaining information from directly connected networking devices, such as network switches. This can be helpful when diagnosing suspected network connectivity issues.
LDWin supports the following methods of link discovery:
- CDP — Cisco Discovery Protocol
- LLDP — Link Layer Discovery Protocol
LDWin is based on WinCDP also by Chris Hall
Why?
Lets face it. We have all been there: «where does this network cable / uplink / port go?»
Until now, it has been a matter of looking up cable numbers in databases, fiddling about in the back of server and network racks or worst case — manually tracing cables down the backs of server racks, under the computer room or office floor, in overhead cable trays etc etc…
There must be a better way to tell where a network cable goes to without having to go to all that trouble every time. VMware ESXi has Link discovery built in. Why not also have link discovery in Windows?
How to Use
You must have administrative rights to run this program
- Start the program
- From the «Network Connection:» drop down, select the network adaptor over which you wish to obtain network link information
- Click «Get Link Data»
- LDWin will then listen on the selected network adaptor for link protocol announcements. It may take up to 60 seconds to receive an announcement
- Once an announcement has been received, the received information will be displayed in the results section
- Use the «Save Link Data» button to save the received information into a text file
NOTE: A valid TCP/IP address is not required to receive valid link information.

You wish it could also discover link information for devices connected to devices that support Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) as well as Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP)?Well dear reader, you are in luck! Hot off of the coding press is LDWin: Link Discovery for Windows:LDWin supports the following methods of link discovery. Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) Media Endpoint Discovery (MED) provides additional capabilities to support media endpoint devices such as to enable the advertisement of network policies for applications like voice or video, device location discovery, and troubleshooting information. The Enable-NetLldpAgent cmdlet enables Logical Link Discovery Protocol (LLDP) on a network interface on a host computer. Examples Example 1: Enable LLDP locally PS C: Enable-NetLldpAgent -NetAdapterName ‘Ethernet1’ This command enables LLDP on a network interface named Ethernet1 on the local computer.
Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) is a layer 2 neighbor discovery protocol that allows devices to advertise device information to their directly connected peers/neighbors. It is best practice to enable LLDP globally to standardize network topology across all devices if you have a multi-vendor network.
Commonly used layer 2 discovery protocols are often vendor-proprietary, for instance, Cisco’s CDP, Foundry’s FDP, Extreme’s EDP and Nortel’s NDP. This makes layer 2 discovery difficult in a heterogeneous environment. To counter this, IETF has introduced a standard vendor-neutral configuration exchange protocol – the LLDP.
Using LLDP, device information such as chassis identification, port ID, port description, system name and description, device capability (as router, switch, hub…), IP/MAC address, etc., are transmitted to the neighboring devices. This information is also stored in local Management Information Databases (MIBs), and can be queried with the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). The LLDP-enabled devices have an LLDP agent installed in them, which sends out advertisements from all physical interfaces either periodically or as changes occur.
Network monitoring software (like WhatsUp Gold) uses SNMP queries to scan a device’s MIB to retrieve neighbor information. Plus its built-in layer 2/3 network discovery and mapping uses LLDP in conjunction with its ARP Cache Discovery method, as well as other layer 2/3 protocols, to trawl through the interconnected devices, retrieving information to build a detailed topology map. As LLDP works purely at the data link layer, WhatsUp Gold will discover devices with no recent IP traffic, as well as devices in a blocked state.

Overview
The haneWIN LLDP software implements a LLDP Agent based on the IEEE 802.1ABstandard for the Link Layer Discovery Protocol.A native LLDP Agent service is implemented for Windows XP/VISTA/20xx/7/8/10.A Control Panel Applet provides interactive access to the service.
The LLDP MIB is implemented as SNMP MIB subagent for the Windows SNMP agent.
Optionally the software can read and send CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol)version 1 and 2 packets. Infomation received from CDP packets is stored in theLLDP MIB to present a consistent data base to SNMP management software.
The software is implemented as 32 and 64 Bit versions. Version is selected by the installerdepending on the OS.
The haneWIN LLDP Agent Software is Shareware.
You may test the software for 30 days without any obligation.Any use of the software after the evaluation time requires a software license.Registration details you will find in order.txt.
Introduction
The Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) and Cisco discovery protocol areprotocols for discovering the physical topology in 802 LANs. LLDP uses multicast packetsto announce stations on LAN. CDP uses multicast packets in SNAP format. Adjacent stationsare discovered and stored by the LLDP agent for retrieval by a SNMP basednetwork management system.
Installation
Computer with Windows XP or higher.
- Install the software by running the installer with administrator rights. The setup software installs the LLDP protocol driver, the LLDP Agent and LLDP MIB SNMP subagent. If a LLDP.INI configuration file is provided with the installer the configuration is copied in the installtion directory.
- With the control panel applet haneWIN LLDP Agent you can configure and monitor the service.
Only Administrators are allowed to start the applet. On systems with UAC activeyou must start the applet by ‘Run as Administrator’/intel-q33-express-windows-10.html.
The service is configured for automatic start on Windows startup. The service can be started and stopped manually through the servicescontrol panel.
- You could install and start the LLDP Agent service manually executing the command:
LLDP -install - To uninstall the LLDP service manually execute the command:
LLDP -remove
The command stops a running LLDP Agent service and removes the LLDP Agent service from the services list.
Operation
The Info Box at startup of the control panel applet is displayed only forunregistered version.
The main window of the LLDP control panel displays the adjacent station and port IDs,the name of the adjacent station and if available the IP address of the adjacent station.observed by the server.
Clicking on the column header the list is sorted based on the column entries.
Using the right mouse button, you can remove an entry manually from the list.
For stations transmitting 802.1 and 802.3 extensions VlanId and Operational Mode of theinterface is evaluated.
Due to restrictions set by Windows the LLDP agent can not resolve the physicalmau type (twisted pair, fiber, ..) of an interface, only link speed and full/half duplexoperation is available.Because LLDP 802.3 extensions combine these information in a single field, thephysical mau type is internally fixed to twisted pair.

Menus
The LLDP transmit interval defines how often LLDP multicasts are transmitted on theLAN segment. The default is configured to every 30 seconds.
The LLDP hold multiplier defines how long transmitted LLDP packets arevalid in the database of adjacent stations receiving the packet. It is defined in the form of a multiplier to the LLDP transmit interval.
CDP packet analysis is optional. It is enabled by default. The LLDP agent can send CDP packets. By default CDP packets are send onlyon those interfaces were a CDP packet was received before.

You are fixing a flakey network connection and you suspect the switch port is messing up. How do you find the port that it is plugged into? Trace the cable? Use exquisitely detailed network maps? Be blessed enough to have properly labeled wall jacks? If you are still reading this, those options are not available or you want a better way. Well, read on!
LDWin is an open source link discovery tool that brings Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) and Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) to Windows. It displays the name, IP, VLAN, and port of the switch that you are connected to. You can download LDWin from here.
Using Group Policy Preferences, I deploy LDWin to all of my computers. I use a file preference to stick it in a local tools folder.
I then use a shortcut preference to add a link to Windows Administrative Tools. This provides quick access from the Start Menu for any administrator (as UAC will be triggerred when LDWin is opened).
By using LDWin and distributing it with Group Policy, I can quickly find what port any computer is using. A big thanks to Chris Hall for this tool. Now, if only I had a program that could find the other end of my cable tester. Those dang dongles disappear!
