programs which can use LAME (or include fully licensed versions of LAME),

LAME is a MP3 encoder and the Lame ACM MP3 is an ACM codec that you can use in most applications for example in Virtualdub(to install the ACM codec just extract all files and right click on the LameACM.inf and select Install). LameDropXPd is a practical frontend for LAME that makes things easier to the user, as there is no need to know about command line usage: most LAME settings are reachable on a graphical interface.

Add faster CRC routine. The speed improvement is very small for typical use cases, but may be valuable if a lot of independent encodes are running and/or for a very long time. Patch by Robert Kausch of the fre:ac project.
Fix configure script glob-ranges matching of compiler versions. This may result in faster code if no compiler optimization flags are specified during the configure step. This is part of patch ticket [ #491 ] lame 3.100 slower than 3.99.5
Disable Takehiros IEEE753 hack by default. On modern CPUs (anything more recent from AMD than hammer/k8; Intel: Core2, i3/5/7/9 and similar — no idea about recent Atom/Pentium) it is a speed pessimization. Add a configure option for it so that it can be enabled on old CPUs.
Update to more recent autotools based scripts, this may or may not fix issues during the configure stage for less popular or more recent OS or architectures.

It’s the SoX resampling ‘best’ option which is causing LamedropXPd GUI to not initiate. Just use medium setting- it’s fine!

Would Baldrick please pass on to lamedropXPd creator John Edwards at Rarewares this info regarding resampling bug please. The bug is only using the ‘best option’ as the other two options ‘fast’ and ‘medium’ work fine as intended. The older Lamedropbox from 2017 has the same bug. I tested 32 bit dropbox bitin WinXP and Win7 32 bit systems. Thankyou.

I reverted back to older 3.100 LameDropXpd which has working resampling option as newer 2021 version has removed this useful option due to a bug introduced during recompiling? of code. My own preference is to still use Lame 3.98.4 for general use, but one below is excellent too.

Still useful and relevant. You need a Dropbox or GUI for this hence my low review on ease of use. By the way the latest Rarewares Lame Dropbox has a resampling bug so that option has been removed until it’s fixed. I reverted to the last Dropbox box which is bug free.

LAME MP3 Encoder is an application that is used to encode audio in MP3. LAME uses three different compression methods.
The CBR method can be used in cases where you want to keep a constant bitrate in the whole file and a predictable file size. Use this method only when you need to be compatible with specific software or hardware decoders that support only this type of compression. In other cases, the CBR method is not welcomed due to the large size of the final file.
LAME MP3 Encoder offers high-quality audio compression, enabling smaller file sizes without substantial loss in sound quality.
The VBR method is the most popular. It provides the choice not of bitrate, but the quality of audio, which makes it possible to change the bitrate in different places in the file depending on the complexity of the initial content. Use the Variable Bitrate method to get smaller files that still contain good quality.
And the last compression method — ABR — is a combination of the two methods described above. It allows you to select the lowest bitrate for audio encoding, but at the same time leaving the bitrate relatively close to the value that the user has chosen. This is how you get files with constant bitrate and more or less compact size.
LAME MP3 Encoder works in command line mode, so before using it you should read the information that is in the downloaded package. The syntax of the commands is very simple and consists of the following template: lame [options] [outputfile], where options indicate compression method, bitrate or quality.
The encoder library is free of charge and is only available as source code that needs to be compiled before use. If you want to use a ready-to-use application, you can download editors such as winLAME or Audacity that use LAME MP3 Encoder to convert audio.

I recently used the LAME software to convert an audio file from one format to another. The process was quick and easy and the results were satisfactory. Третий алгоритм под названием ABR объединяет два предыдущих метода, создавая файлы меньшего размера, но сохраняя при этом постоянный битрейт.
Являясь свободно программным обеспечением под лицензией GPL аудиокодек LAME распространяется в виде исходных кодов, однако на нашем сайте вы можете скачать архивы со скомпилированными библиотеками для 32 и 64-битных версий Windows 7, 8.1 и 10. Файл lame.exe предназначен для использования в командной строке, а библиотека lame_enc.dll предназначена для использования в стороннем программном обеспечении.
