Guide to fix the Windows 10 Freelancer issue — [Exe starts, but crashes right after the start]

— Install Freelancer with admin rights, after that install Discovery with admin rights
— Close any remaining processes related to Freelancer or Discovery Freelancer

— Right Click on your left Windows Symbol
— Go to Settings
— Go to Apps
— Go to (Right side) Programs and Features
— Go to Activate and Deactivate Windows Features
— Activate .NET Framework 3.5 and Legacy Components
— Click on OK and Windows should download and install .NET Framework 3.5 and Directplay which are needed for Freelancer.

— Now use the Discovery launcher to start Freelancer

For more information visit www.discoverygc.com

Here is a Video where a guy explains it again how to activate Directplay on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

Ok, so I have a rather odd problem. Several months ago, I switched to a new laptop which has Windows 10. I installed Freelancer and Discovery and had no issues at all. Recently, I’ve wanted to go back and play the single player campaign again. After installing a separate instance of Freelancer, I have encountered the above problem, BUT the Disco install still runs fine. I have followed the instructions to no avail, Thoughts?

Any help is appreciated.

I think the vanilla install does not work at all, I’ve tried as well but to no avail, many compatibility packs but nothing worked. I’m not an expert on the subject but I’ll say I had the same issue and couldn’t really find any solution.

Trying to play freelancer while disco is installed doesn’t work and the game won’t start.

You need to install freelancer again, best option is on another drive otherwise it can come to issues with discovery and maybe a total broken Freelancer.

If it still not work, download the community patch and install it.

Well, I’ve solved my problem at least. It occurred to me that there were folders for Freelancer as well as Disco in the My Games folder in My Documents. I moved those over to the desktop and started up the vanilla install of Freelancer. Started up fine and I’m well on my way in the story. Don’t know if this will help anyone or was just a brain-fart on my part for not thinking of it sooner, but, there ya go.

Cheers

If, for some reason, you can’t enable .NET 3 and DirectPlay as it is explained above, you can do it manually.

Just open Command Prompt as administrator and type the following commands:

Code:

dism /Online /enable-feature /FeatureName:"LegacyComponents" /all /NoRestart
dism /Online /enable-feature /FeatureName:"DirectPlay" /NoRestart
dism /Online /enable-feature /FeatureName:"NetFX3" /all /NoRestart

Hope this will help.

Having an issue currently. I have FL installed on my C drive while I have Discovery installed on my E drive. Discovery works fine, however I want to run vanilla FL so I can play the campaign again. I experience the same error above ^ where the application starts and crashs after about 3 seconds. I have both .NET Framework 3.5 and Legacy Components enabled. I had this issue a few years ago before I found Discovery and was able to fix it by enabling DirectPlay. However when I recently got into Discovery I uninstalled FL to get a fresh install in, and FL vanilla no longer works. Prior to the fresh install FL did work. Just to be clear, Discovery works fine, running the EXE from the vanilla game file folder does not.

Specs: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Intel i5 6600K @ 3.5GHz
16GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 980Ti

It was suggested to me to copy the FL save folder, and move it so vanilla FL doesn’t contest Discovery. Done that, wasn’t able to get vanilla FL to work.

I’ve tried disabling Legacy componets and reenabling, no effect.

Tried this, still closes the app after about 3 seconds. No change. Although this sounds like it may be helpful for future use.

I am having the same issue, even tried installing from the CD and it will not launch. tried it on my desktop and my laptop. worked in the past on the laptop, had an outdated version of discovery that would play fine, tried to update and now I can’t get it to launch on either PC.

Really missing the Vanilla storyline, but if my internet at work will suffice I’d love to play online and RP.

To see this working, head to your live site.

Hey Everyone. We are rebooting Freelancer! Please Read if you are interested in installing.

1) BEFORE THE INSTALLATION. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnv8dYjt-VM

2) Download the Vanilla Freelancer ISO at this link; https://www.dropbox.com/s/nv60nz5dgwqdua8/Freelancer.iso?dl=0

3)Double-Click the ISO, you will see a Setup.exe. Right click this and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR and install the game to a SIMPLE DIRECTORY. There can be issues with the default install directory, so try something like this! (C:\Games\Freelancer)

4)Download the combined patch (HERE — and check your spam if the link doesn’t show up.) which installs the following; (Credit to Callum @ https://librelancer.net/)

  • Official 1.1 Patch

  • Jason’s Freelancer Patch (bug fixes, widescreen support etc.)

  • No-CD EXE (Required for Windows 10)

5) Right click this and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR to Install the combined patch, when asked direct it to your game installation folder (C:\Games\Freelancer)

6) Run the game! Should boot up no problem. (Join us at our server; Freelancer Revival Project.)

On a side note, probably don’t run the game as admin or it will conflict with Discords PTT feature. If it conflicts anyway give it a quick restart. Should fix that right up.

I did try the below tips but ultimately like the poster below found the link to the patch not working. I then found https://www.moddb.com/mods/freelancer-hd-edition/downloads

I downloaded and installed the ISO from this website and then I downloaded the mod above and I have a fully working (and not bad looking) version of the game running on my windows 11 system

Just google the patches and you’ll find them

I am getting an error code «the code execution cannot proceed because Common.dll was not found. » I get this error code for a few dlls and this wasn’t an issue the day I downloaded it. Now, day 2 it is showing this problem everytime I try to launch. What’s the issue and the fix?

Sounds like you’re running it from the virtual disc, which doesn’t actually have the game installed on it. Try running it from your C drive under Microsoft games. If you are, I guess just reinstall, but you can find those dlls online if they keep disappearing.

@Chris Gerard THANK YOU!

Thanks for the instruction and resources provided. Everything works great and I am extremely happy to be able to play this game again. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart!

Has anyone else had a problem where starting a new game crashes Freelancer?

I can join multiplayer servers just fine, but new game crashes :(

FLspew.txt showing «: ERROR:General:StreamingSound: missing MP3 codec?»
Also «*** WARNING: Failed to get start location», but suspect the codec is the cause of crash.

Tried a fix posted here — http://lancersreactor.org/forum/index.php?thread/673-soundproblem-error-general-streamingsound-missing-mp3-codec/

No luck, giving up for now.

so idk what i’m doing wrong, but i downloaded the file, i ended up having to extract all files to a default folder under documents because it would not let me extract straight to the custom file folder, i moved all files from the default documents folder to the custom folder. and ran the setup as an administrator and the setup ran fine, i then went to the link for the combined patch, downloaded the combined patch, attempted to extract it with no luck, moved it to the custom location, ran the program, which it called extraction, however freelancer wont run saying that certain dll files are not found. and as near as i can tell the combined patch is still a zip file and never properly extracted, so now what do i do?

It’s tricky to say if you successfully applied the patch files. You could just run the patch and let it dump the files wherever it wants, then copy those files over the top of your Freelancer installation

Typically when games say a dll is missing you can just go download that DLL and put it in the same directory as the .exe you’re running. So, that’s worth a shot. Often you’ll need to do it for a few different DLLs.

Usually this only happens if you’re missing some kind of redistributable like DirectX or .net framework. Did you follow the linked video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnv8dYjt-VM

So on my laptop it downloaded fine, and booted fine, but stuck in 1280×960. did i mess something up?

Within the Options in-game, I’m able to get 2560x1440x32 and 3840x2160x32 running with no issues. You can also modify the [Display] area of PerfOptions.ini, found (for me) in Documents/My Games/Freelancer to whatever resolution you wish.

Thank you for this guide — I had tried to get Freelancer working on Win10 several times over several years, and this ‘just worked’.

That makes me very happy to hear that sir.

If you are interested in joining our community, we are trying to reboot a vanilla esque experience. we intend to fiddle with it a bit. but we are not an RP server, and we don’t want to completely change the experience, only enhance it.

If you are interested you can find our Discord in the forums, and our server is called «Freelancer Revival Project»

Its empty at the moment, but I am actively working on a promo video for it. we need as many people on board as possible. We intend to host bi monthly events through the summer as we work on things on a test server for later implementation. at the moment, its completely vanilla, and we are striving to ensure we have zero player save data losses with our updates to the server.

This has made my week! Thank you so much. Great memories of this game.

@Nathanael Walters absolutely no problem, it is great to see we aren’t the only ones getting joy from this old gem of a game :) Hope to see you in space friend!

  • So I recently got Freelancer again after getting nostalgic for it, but when I try to start it, it never actually does start. The problem, I believe, is that I am running windows 10 or something along those lines. The only problem with this is that it wont start even in compatibility mode. I tried other versions of the game, downloaded patches and unofficial patches, and even downloaded another version at theisozone, none work. All it does is just sit there. Some other old games only run as background processes, but this one never even starts at all. I googled it, and got no results back, and was wondering if this happened to anyone else.

    My laptop’s specs:

    Procesor — Intel Core i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59GHz
    RAM — 16 Gb with 16.9 usable
64 bit operating system — x64 based processor
    Windows 10 OS

Im a bit of a noob at computers, so the simpler you speak the better.

    Thanks

  • There can be a number of reasons for FreeLancer not to start.

    1. Set the startup to run the program as administrator. You should probably install the same way.

    2. Look at your updates and see if KB3086255 was installed. This update prevents some games from running. Use the MS knowledgebase to find [MS15-097 Description of the security update-151008], it explains how to tweak the registry to put the service on manual. That allows many games to run.

Be very careful doing anything with the registry, but I am sure you have heard that. In that article, Microsoft has instructions on how to backup the registry.

Microsoft seems to be breaking things, instead of making their OS compatible with anything older.

    Pasca;05

  • Ya know, it sounds like he fixed it already well over a week ago…

  • ive just opened up my old freelancer case and installed it on windows 10, and it worked without any problems at all. even got multiplayer working thx to ftl still operating a server.

the only thing i can think of is running it as an administrator mode if anyone is having problems with it

  • I’ve tried running it in Administrator mode on both an x64 and an x32 system (both laptops) and the thing won’t start on either. Like the OP, I’m not very conversant with messing with operating systems.

  • Hey,
With the push for Windows 10, the new updates seem to be breaking a load of stuff on both my laptops. I finally decided to use the No-CD version, but it seems to have a slight horizontal stretch to it. In space, it isn’t as apparent, but the map is no longer square. Other than that, I tried everything that used to work, running as administrator, resetting the display, disabling desktop composition, but the CD still failed to start. Microsoft seems to be pushing everything to Win10 and XBox.
    Pascal

  • I recommend going back to Windows XP then. You’ll be safe from Microsoft’s grubby hands this way.

  • I even don’t know how to get the same problems
No-CD works well and i have not noticed non-square map maybe because i always use official 1.1 patch, adoxas patch and/or dsace client

  • Me neither.

I even played the complete SP campaign last weekend. OK it wasn’t full width but it was doable with the 1.1 patch and no-CD exe. Had to tweak something with some sound codecs, but that was all.

Some one had to get rid of those nomads again, they keep coming back every time. So after i added some goodies like a decent ship, shield and weapons to a base i was ready to kill all those lvl 4 NPC ships.

  • Hey everyone, the one problem that I have with the game is not being able to put in a username for me for multiplayer. There is only a few letters that im able to type then the rest are dashes (-). Example: –-fs-a–028 instead of WolfSpawn028
I am running a windows 10 on an HP.
Is there anything that I can do to fix this?

  • Hey,

I have looked into the problem of the horizontal stretch, and have found it to be even more perplexing. I took some screenshots so I could post them, but when I looked at them, they were normal. I have the same video driver that I have been using since this laptop came out (2006), and have seen no other aberrations with anything else.

As a side note, there are also strange jumps in the screen, like when something produces a static interference. In one screen, I was able to see that the screen itself was doing something like a phase shift. I tried to use the fix for the MS15-097 update, which suggests turn on the service for the secdrv.sys driver. That had no effect. Not surprising though, it is mainly for if the game will not run. I had the problem with Age Of Mythology, which I still sometimes play.

Because all of this is new, I am suspecting it might still be related to an update breaking something. I have kept the Windows 10 updates from installing, as they do not update anything except make your computer vulnerable to being invaded by Windows 10. I am thinking of just doing a flat install of Vista and keeping the computer segregated from the internet.

    As always,
    Pascal05

  • Getting a crash after the initial movies when using vanilla Freelancer on Windows 10 Pro; help, please?

  • OK here is what I suggest, IF you are having issues getting Freelancer vanilla to run on your windows 10 PC then come to my TS3 server and grab me, OR grab me in skype which would work better due to screen share.

We can then verify the files you have, fix any graphics issues more than likely and other stuff much faster than this Ping Pong messaging as it is right now. THEN once it is fixed each can come in here post what their issue was and how “IF” we can , it got fixed for you.

    SO
    TS3 address is: originaldu.mainvoice.info:8048
If sending me a skype contact request be sure in the default message to remove that and instead replace it with, “Need freelancer game run help.”

otherwise it will get whacked as spam.
SKYPE in search line place originaldu»AT»yahoo.com
You will find 3 names use Sarath Delmarth for the name.

If you come into TS3 directly then look for Sarath.
I will be going into hospital Monday the 20th of Feb 2017.
I will have both skype and TS3 access IF they have proper internet connectivity, otherwise it may be a few days until I can get back with you.

I hope I an be of assistance, since the StarPort folks have helped me many times maybe this time i can be of service to a few of you in return.

I currently still run a vanilla server on a windows 7 32 bit system and play FL both modded and vanilla on my windows 10 OS PC.
For further info if anything has changed go to my website and check in the CONTACT Tab section.

  • So after going through just about every suggestion to get this working. I fixed it. And it’s very very simple. Go to programs and features from your control panel. then click “Turn Windows Features On or Off” and you will need to check the box called “Legacy Components”… WINDOWS FEATURES ARE WHERE IT’S AT… It’s not a permissions issue.

Are you facing issues with Freelancer, one of the most popular PC games for Windows and macOS? Whether it’s installation errors, game crashes, or performance problems, this comprehensive guide will help you troubleshoot and resolve these issues. In this blog, you’ll find various methods to fix the most common problems with Freelancer and what to do if the issues persist. Let’s dive in!

Common Issues with Freelancer

Before we start with the fixes, here are some of the common issues players encounter with Freelancer:

  • Installation errors on Windows or macOS
  • Game crashes or freezes during gameplay
  • Low FPS or stuttering
  • Audio glitches
  • Missing or corrupted files
  • Network-related issues during multiplayer sessions

How to Fix Freelancer Issues on Windows and macOS

1. Check System Requirements

The first step in troubleshooting is to ensure your PC or Mac meets the minimum system requirements for Freelancer. Running the game on incompatible hardware is one of the most common causes of poor performance or crashes.

Minimum System Requirements for Freelancer:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 or higher
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 or equivalent
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 960 / AMD Radeon R9 280 or better
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 50 GB available space

If your system doesn’t meet these requirements, upgrading your hardware is recommended to run the game smoothly.

2. Update Your Drivers

Outdated drivers, particularly for your graphics card, can lead to performance issues or crashes in Freelancer. To resolve this:

  • For Windows:
  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Go to Display Adapters.
  3. Right-click your GPU and choose Update driver.
  4. You can also download the latest drivers from the official websites of NVIDIA or AMD:
    • NVIDIA Drivers
    • AMD Drivers
  • For macOS: macOS automatically handles driver updates. Ensure you’re running the latest macOS version by going to System Preferences > Software Update.

3. Verify Game Files (Steam or Epic Games Store)

Corrupted or missing game files can prevent Freelancer from running correctly. Verifying the integrity of your game files can fix this.

  • On Steam:
  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Right-click on Freelancer and select Properties.
  3. Go to the Local Files tab and click on Verify Integrity of Game Files.
  • On Epic Games Store:
  1. Open Epic Games Launcher and go to your Library.
  2. Click on the three dots next to Freelancer.
  3. Select Verify.

This process will fix any corrupted files and download missing files automatically.

4. Update or Reinstall DirectX (For Windows)

If you’re facing graphical issues or crashes on Windows, outdated DirectX may be the culprit. Download the latest version of DirectX from the official Microsoft website.

5. Check for Game Patches and Updates

The developers of Freelancer frequently release updates to fix bugs and improve game performance. Ensure that you’re running the latest version of the game.

  • On Steam or Epic Games Store, updates are usually applied automatically, but you can manually check for updates by visiting the game’s page on these platforms.

6. Optimize In-Game Settings

Lowering the graphics settings in Freelancer can significantly improve performance, especially if you’re experiencing lag or stuttering. Here’s how to adjust them:

  • Go to Settings > Graphics in Freelancer.
  • Lower settings like Shadows, Anti-Aliasing, and Texture Quality.
  • Turn off unnecessary effects such as Motion Blur or V-Sync.

7. Disable Background Applications

Running multiple applications in the background while playing Freelancer can consume valuable system resources. Close unnecessary apps such as web browsers or video players.

  • Windows: Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end tasks that aren’t needed.
  • macOS: Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities and close resource-heavy apps.

8. Fix Network-Related Issues

If you experience network lag or connection problems during multiplayer sessions, try the following:

  • Restart your modem or router.
  • Switch to a wired connection if you’re on Wi-Fi.
  • Disable any VPN or firewall that may be interfering with the connection.

You can also check Freelancer server status by visiting Freelancer official server status page or use third-party monitoring services like DownDetector.

What to Do If the Issues Persist?

If none of the above methods resolve your problem with Freelancer, you may need to:

  • Reinstall the Game: Uninstall Freelancer completely and then download it again from a trusted source such as Steam or Epic Games. Ensure that the installation directory is clear of previous files to avoid conflicts.
  • Contact Support: Reach out to the official Freelancer support team for assistance. You can typically submit a ticket through the game’s official website or find community forums for additional help.
  • Check Online Forums: Gamers worldwide share troubleshooting tips on forums like Reddit and GameFAQs. Searching for your specific issue there may reveal solutions from other players.

Conclusion

By following the steps outlined in this guide, you should be able to fix most common issues related to Freelancer on Windows and macOS. Whether you’re facing installation errors, game crashes, or performance issues, the methods provided will help you get back to enjoying the game.

For more technical support or to download the latest version of Freelancer, visit the official website or the game’s page on Steam or Epic Games. If the problem persists, don’t hesitate to seek further help from Freelancer support or online communities.
