Recently, the number of users who are trying to update Windows 11 but failing has increased. You might also be unable to download a Windows update and find error 0xca020007, especially on 22H2. However, solutions to this update problem are the same for all the versions whether it is Windows 11 22H2, 21H2, Windows 10 2004, or any other.

Root cause of Windows update error 0xca020007 is a problem with services, particularly with BITS. This service shows as already running but it is not working properly causing the installation process to fail. This situation can appear mostly due to corrupted System files or Windows image aka .wim. Furthermore, broken Windows update components, cache, shortage of disk space, driver issues, and unstable network may also trigger this error.

Update error 0xca020007 in Windows 11 and 10

Here is how to fix update error 0xca020007 in Windows 11 or 10 –

Way-1: Run System File Checker and DISM tools

Error 0xca020007 (KB501842 and other updates) shows because of Services that are responsible to handle Windows updates. We have already mentioned that the services don’t work correctly due to problems with System Files and WIM file. See – Fix Windows 11 or 10 update error code 80200056.

Repairing the Services can solve the existing error code and for this System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management tools are capable enough. So without getting bothered run them using the below steps –

1. Press Windows and R.
2. Type – cmd.
3. Next, press – Ctrl+Shift+Enter.
4. On the User account control dialog, select Yes.
5. Type the syntax SFC /Scannow.

1. Hit Enter to see the message “Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification x% complete”
2. Once the percentage reached 100% restart your computer.
3. Go to Settings > Windows update.
4. Click on – Check for updates.
5. See if Update error 0xca020007 is settled now.
6. If the error still persists then now it is time to run the DISM tool and for this Open Command prompt as administrator.
7.  Type the following commands one by one and press enter –

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. In the end, reboot the device and see if the error is solved now.

Way-2: Restart Background intelligent services and other services that affect Windows update

For many users who are trying to install KB501842 0xca020007 error code appears. If you encounter the same problem then we have mentioned above the BITS service is the main reason behind this.

Therefore, restart the services using the following guide –

1. Click on Start.
2. Type – services.msc.
3. Hit Enter to open the Services window.
4. Find Background Intelligent Transfer Service and right-click on it.
5. Select – Properties.
6. Click the dropdown for Startup type.
7. Choose Automatic.
8. Under Service Status, click on Start.
9. Click Apply then OK.

1. Take the same actions for Windows update and Cryptographic Services,
2. Restart the PC and try to install the update again.

Way-3: Reset Windows update cache and delete the content in SoftwareDistribution

When any Windows update errors including 0xca020007 are generated, corruptions in cache and components are the prominent reasons. But you can clean the cache and repair the components without any problem if you implement the steps ahead –

1. Access the elevated command prompt as you have done in Way-1.
2. Run the following commands –

net stop wuaserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc

1. Now open the File Explorer (Winkey+E).
2. Copy the under-written path –

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

1. Paste this into the address bar and press Enter.
2. Select all the content in the folder and delete them.
3. Now run the below commands –

net start wuaserv
net start bits
net start cryptsvc

1. Restart your computer and try getting the update.
2. In case, the update failed to install again then download this file – Wureset_Windows_11_update.zip.
3. Extract the zip package and browse the folder.
4. Right-click on WuReset.bat and select Run as administrator.
5. Click Yes on the UAC pop-up and press any key to start the reset command.
6. Exit the command prompt and try once more to receive the update.

Way-4: Use Windows update troubleshooter

By default Windows 11 include a set of troubleshooting tools to rectify different errors related to Windows update, keyboard, Network adapter, Power, Store apps, and more.

Coming across 0xca020007 error code indicates that you need to bring Windows update troubleshooter into use –

1. Click on Search.
2. Type – troubleshooter.
3. Press Enter to launch the Settings app.
4. Click on – Other troubleshooters.
5. Go to Windows update and click on Run.

1. The utility will detect the problem, check services and pending restarts, and then repair the issue.

Way-5: Check if the internet is stable

Windows update error most of the time fails because of unstable internet access or power surge. These flaws break the integrity of update files and lead to affect the entire process.

So before moving forward to in-place upgrade carefully check your internet access flow that whether it is stable. Also, make sure that power surge is not a culprit of this unsuccessful Windows update process,

Way-6: Make sure you have enough free space to install the update

One more very necessary thing to check is disk space that can accommodate the Windows update KB501842 or which one you need. A patch has volume in GigaByte and it requires a big room to be installed.

When you haven’t sufficient storage space the Windows update may fail and show error 0xca020007. Hence, follow the guidelines and check the space –

1. Press – Winkey+E.
2. In the Quick access pane in File Explorer, select – This PC.
3. Check the Devices and drives and see how much volume is free on your computer.
4. If there is no sufficient room you can use disk cleanup to evacuate some.

Way-7: Follow In-place upgrade

In-place upgrade is a feature in Windows 11 that reinstalls the operating system straight to the most recent version that includes the latest security patch or cumulative update.

You will not need to separately update the system or install a patch using this feature. This is how –

1. Click on this link.
2. Navigate to ‘Create installation media’ section and click on – Download tool now.
3. Run the Setup file.
4. Select Yes on the prompt.
5. Click Agree on License and terms wizard.
6. Select Upgrade this PC now.
7. Click on Next.
8. Select – Install.
9. Follow the instructions on the screen and complete the installation.

Methods:
Way-1: Run System File Checker and DISM tools
Way-2: Restart Background intelligent services and other services that affect Windows update

The Windows update process sometimes fails with error code 0xca020007. Several factors can cause this error. These are listed below:

1. You might experience the 0xca020007 error if your internet connectivity is poor. Once the internet becomes stable, try again.
2. Windows relies on system files to function properly. A corrupt or faulty system file can cause the 0xca020007 error
3. If any of your peripheral devices, including USBs, controllers, etc are connected to your computer, then disconnect all your peripheral devices because these could be interfering with Windows updates.
4. You might be experiencing this error code due to running out of space on your hard drive. If this is the case, you can free up some space by using a desk cleanup tool.
5. In some cases, the device drivers can interfere with each other and cause this error code. To fix this problem, disconnect all your peripheral devices and update your Windows.
6. Your Windows update may have failed because it needed more than one update. Rebooting and retrying your update will fix the problem.

Now that we know the error code and what caused it, we can work on fixing it.

1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

The Windows Update troubleshooter is designed to help you overcome errors associated with Windows updates, so it can assist you in resolving the 0xca020007 error.

To run the Windows update troubleshooter, follow these steps:-

• Press the Windows + I keys to open the Settings menu.
• Navigate to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

• Go to Windows Update and click on Run.

It will take a while for the process to complete. You can now apply the recommended fixes by following the on-screen instructions. Restart your computer to see if you are able to resolve the error.

2. Run System File Checker

If the problem persists, run the System File Checker tool to identify corrupted system files. Here are the steps to run the tool.

• Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run command.
• Type cmd in the text field and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open Command Prompt with admin access.
• If UAC appears on the screen, click Yes to continue.

• In the elevated command prompt window, type the following command. Hit Enter.

sfc /scannow

• The process will take some time to complete. Start your computer again and see if it solves the problem.

3. Clear the SoftwareDistribution folder

Windows Update requires temporary files to be stored in the software distribution folder located in the Windows directory. If the error 0xca020007 is caused by software distribution folder conflicts, clearing it might solve the problem.

• Right-click on Start and select Run from the menu list.
• Type cmd in the dialog box and press the Ctrl + Shift + Enter keyboard shortcut.
• Click on the Yes button when UAC appears on the computer screen.
• In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter. This will stop the Windows Update Service.

net stop wuauserv

• Again run the below command and this will stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

net stop bits

• Now open Windows Explorer and browse the following path:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

• On the next page, select all the contents and delete them.

Note: If you are having problems deleting all the files, restart your computer and give it another try.

• After you clear the SoftwareDistribution folder, run the below command to start the Windows Update service.

net start wuauserv

• Again run the following command to start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service

net start bits

After you have completed the above steps, Windows will reorganize the file system and redownload all the components.

4. Restart Windows Update Service

It’s common to see several programs running in the background when you open up the task manager. These programs are known as Windows services. Although Windows does good job managing services, sometimes the feature or tool does not give effective results. In such a case, you will have to restart the services. To do this, follow the below steps:

• Right-click on Start and select Run from the menu list.
• Type services.msc in the text box and press Enter to open the Services window.
• On the next screen, locate the Windows Update service.
• Once you find the service, right-click on it and select the Properties option.
• On the General tab, change the Startup type to Automatic.
• Now click Apply to save the changes.
• Next to the Service status, click on the Start button.
• If your service is already Running, click on Stop and Start it again.

After you perform the above steps, restart your computer and check to see if Windows Update Error Code 0xca020007 is solved.

5. Reset Windows Update Components

If your Windows Update is stuck checking or installing updates, you can fix the problem simply by resetting the Windows Update Components. Here’s how:

• Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
• Type the following command line and press Enter after each command:

net stop bits

• Conflicting hardware component(s): If you have a lot of peripherals connected to your system, such as USB hubs, external hard drives, phone chargers etc. then it’s possible one or more of these devices are adversely affecting your Windows operating system.

Other reasons why error 0xca020007 may be rearing its ugly head is due to having a lot of pending updates. There are instances when scheduling your system to download and/or apply several updates at once, can result in a failed installed, for some. In situations like this, rebooting and trying again, should be enough to fix the problem.

In other instances issues with the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) may also be to blame.

Anyway, now we have that out of the way let’s take a look at the numerous ways you can fix this error.

How to Fix It

Windows Update error 0xca020007 is like so many other errors if its kind. The result of several common issues. Below you will find a rundown of solutions, all of which proven highly effective at fixing this error.

For that reason, I suggest you attempt them all.

Before attempting any of the more complex, manual methods, it’s recommended that you try the automated approach first.

Free Up Disk Space

One of the very first things you should consider when having problems installing a Windows Update, is the amount of available hard disk space on your computer. Typically, you’ll need in excess of 10Gbs of free space at all times. Not just to install updates, but also for cache storage when running apps.

If you lack sufficient storage space, then there are several things you can do. You can take the more drastic step of acquiring a bigger hard drive or you can run the disk cleanup tool.

Reset Windows Update

If the solutions mentioned above, fail to fix error 0xca020007, then you may want to consider resetting all the components belonging to the Windows Update feature. There are numerous ways you can do this, with the most effective method outlined in my post on fixing error 0x8024a206.

Run System File Checker

In many instances error 0xca020007 is the result of certain services not working as advertised, this could be due to several things. However, for this solution, we’re going to assume that one or more system file(s) have been corrupted.

In situations like this, you can repair (or replace) the file by running the System File Checker tool. For step by step instructions on how to run this tool, check out my post on how to run SFC Scannow.

Once you have successfully run System File Checker, you can verify whether or not it has fixed error 0xca020007. In the event that it has not, then you should consider running the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool.

For step by step instructions on how to do that, simply do the following:

1. Boot into your system as an admin.

2. Now, press + R, type cmd and press CTRL + Shift + Enter.

3. When Command Prompt loads up, type the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Restart BITS

BITS or Background Intelligent Transfer Service is an integral service of the Windows Update component. If this feature stops, then it will effectively halt the update process.

When it comes to error 0xca020007, there’s a possibility that this service has failed to start. In instances like this, you can get around it, by simply starting the service yourself.

Upgrade Windows Using Media Creation Tool

Media Creation Tool allows users to either reinstall or upgrade their iteration of Windows using a standard USB flash drive. For this particular solution, it’s recommended that you upgrade, as oppose to a clean Windows installation.

For step by step instructions on how to do that, please do the following:

1. First, boot into your system as a full administrator.

2. Then, download the Media Creation Tool, for your version of Windows:

Windows 10: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
Windows 11: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11

3. Now open Media Creation Tool and click on Accept (to accept the agreement).

4. This will take you to the What do you want to do? Screen. Click on Upgrade this PC now, then click on Next.

5. This should commence the upgrade. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process.

Once the upgrade has finished, you can now try running Windows Update to determine whether or not it has fixed error 0xca020007.
