Epson WorkForce GT-1500 Specifications
The Epson WorkForce GT-1500 is a scanner, even though it looks like a multifunction printer. With an optical resolution of 1200 dpi and an impressive color depth (48-bit), the GT-1500 can produce high-quality scans of everything from text documents to photographs, though its real strength is text scanning. The modestly sized Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) can handle up to 40 pages — not that we’d fancy scanning that many pages given the 20ppm speed — which makes it ideal for everyday business scanning duties, more so if you throw a loose-leaf document into the mix. It’s not so crash-hot as a photo scanner, though — while it’s more than capable, it’s clear that such duties are a little outside the scanner’s primary job description.
Epson positions the GT-1500 at small businesses; from perspective, it’s certainly got its positives. It’s a good, speedy scanner for text documents and very easy to set up and operate. It’s different from the broader range that a dedicated MFP has, especially in the case of home usage. Instead, the GT-1500 pitches itself more as a workgroup-style scanner for business use, and in that respect, it’s a solid performer.
With a simple, intuitive control panel, usability and convenience are at the heart of the GT-1500’s design. Beyond that, EPSON bundled straightforward EPSON Scan software that walks users through various scanning tasks to make the solution’s initial setup virtually painless. The scanner links to computers through USB, with no network capabilities. The upside is hassle-free direct control, more straightforward troubleshooting, and no drivers/utilities needed on the client’s end. For those whose documents come in near-mint condition, the WorkForce GT-1500 ships with OCR software that easily converts scans into editable text, as well as the ability to generate PDFs directly — a must-have in most any office environment that’s aiming to rid itself of paper finally.
The GT-1500, however, needs to improve in the small business market it targets. For all the praise we’ve given to its ADF and its scanning speed, they wouldn’t be up to the task of high-volume scanning. Without duplex scanning, the GT-1500 requires the pages of double-sided documents to be flipped by hand, which needs a little intervention that can slow you down. These would be severe drawbacks in a workgroup or any situation requiring heavy-duty scanning. The Epson WorkForce GT-1500 strikes an appealing balance of speed, ease of use, and cost for an individual or a small office with moderate scanning needs.
