Discord is one of the most popular social media platforms, and it’s only growing in popularity. With this kind of scale, Discord’s development team puts a lot of work into its tools. One of the tools that the development team uses is Discord Canary, also known as Discord Alpha on Android.

Discord has three public builds: stable (regular), PTB (public test build), and Canary. Stable, as its name suggests, is the most stable version. Crashes and bugs are mostly unexpected, but Stable is the last version to receive new updates. PTB is the middle ground between the Stable and Canary builds. Although crashes and bugs are expected, they shouldn’t happen often, while updates are available a bit earlier than usual. Finally, Canary is the most unstable version of Discord. Frequent crashes and bugs are expected, although you’re probably not going to face any problems since issues are quickly fixed. Canary is the first build to receive updates.
Discord Canary is a public test version of Discord that lets developers update the app’s code and gather feedback from users. It can be downloaded using an official link, which can be found by Googling «Discord Canary» or heading to Discord’s «Discord Testing Clients» blog post. The Canary build is available on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android. Unfortunately, it’s not available on iOS.
You can find all available download links for the Canary below:
- Canary Linux deb: https://discord.com/api/download/canary?platform=linux&format=deb
- Canary Linux tar.gz: https://discord.com/api/download/canary?platform=linux&format=tar.gz
- Canary macOS: https://discord.com/api/download/canary?platform=osx
- Canary Windows 64-bit: https://discord.com/api/downloads/distributions/app/installers/latest?platform=win&channel=canary&arch=x64
Why is it called Discord Canary?
You might’ve heard about “Canary” versions of other apps. Canary, also known as canary release, is a software version that allows developers to update the code for a pre-determined number of end users.
Canary releases are usually utilized to get user feedback about new changes. The users are not usually informed of the changes, which allows developers to distinguish between actual problems, mild problems, and safe updates.
The term “Canary” comes from the Miner’s Canary, a bird used to detect toxic gases in coal mines. Some popular apps with Canary versions are Google Chrome Canary, Windows 11 Insider Preview Build (Canary Build), and Microsoft Edge Insider (Canary Channel).
Is Discord Canary safe?
Discord Canary and regular Discord are based on the same app foundation, so there aren’t many changes in security between regular and Canary builds. However, you should be cautious no matter which build you use.
Discord Canary is safe to use, but again, all standard security measures should be utilized. You should always use a 2-Factor Authentication and a strong password, and avoid clicking on links and sharing personal information.
Is Discord Canary or PTB better?
We mentioned a build called PTB, also known as Public Test Build. PTB is the middle ground between the Stable (regular) and Canary versions. It is not as stable as Stable but not as unstable as Canary. The same goes for update access. With PTB, you won’t get updates as late as Stable and as soon as Canary does. So it’s not a question of which version is better but of how much you’re willing to tolerate.
If you like accessing features early on, you should decide how much you can tolerate an unstable app. If you can tolerate a lot of crashes, bugs, and glitches (they rarely happen even in Canary), you should use the Canary build.
How to use Discord Canary
Discord Canary (Alpha in Android) and Stable versions don’t differ in terms of using the app. Everything you know about regular Discord will be applicable to Canary and vice versa. The only possible difference is the features. There aren’t new features all the time in Canary — it’s just when developers want to test any new ones. So, don’t worry if your Discord Canary is virtually the same as its regular counterpart.
Downloading them might be the biggest difference between the two. Let’s take a look at how you can download Discord Canary on desktop and Android. Remember that Canary doesn’t have an iOS counterpart, but PTB does! Check out our guide on Discord PTB to learn more.
Downloading Discord Canary on desktop
Downloading Discord Canary on the desktop is just like downloading the regular version. To do so, Google «Discord Canary» or head to the Discord’s «Discord Testing Clients» blog post. In both results, you’ll be able to find the download links of all Canary versions.
If you don’t want to bother, here are the official download links of Discord Canary for all operating systems!
- Canary Linux deb: https://discord.com/api/download/canary?platform=linux&format=deb
- Canary Linux tar.gz: https://discord.com/api/download/canary?platform=linux&format=tar.gz
- Canary macOS: https://discord.com/api/download/canary?platform=osx
- Canary Windows 64-bit: https://discord.com/api/downloads/distributions/app/installers/latest?platform=win&channel=canary&arch=x64
Downloading Discord Canary (Alpha) on mobile
Before being able to download the Alpha, the Android counterpart of Discord Canary, you should first request to join a Google Group. You can visit the Group and request membership. Once you’re accepted into the group, you’ll need to visit the Alpha version’s download page there.
After downloading, you’ll notice that there shouldn’t be many differences between the regular app and Alpha, so you can use it just like you would the regular app.
Investing time into Discord? Why not earn while doing it?
People have long been monetizing their Discord servers, charging their members for server access and roles. Now, thanks to Whop’s easy-to-learn and use system, it’s never been easier!
Signing up and starting to sell access to your Discord takes less than 10 minutes — so start getting paid for your hard work and earn an income doing what you love.
If you often find yourself scouring the internet to try out applications, you may have seen “Canary” software versions. For those unaware, huge software firms go slightly ahead by following a multi-version approach by having Beta versions of software. Some firms go even further to have Development AKA Canary version with the sole goal that people would provide feedback on bugs or how to improve the application, or a feature. That’s exactly the reason behind Discord Canary’s existence. Here’s how to download it.
Discord Canary is a development version, AKA the Alpha version of Discord, that users can download to experience new and upcoming Discord features before they arrive to the stable version. Canary is a tier above Beta, and while it’s mostly usable, users may experience random crashes or bugs here and there.
While, it’s completely safe to use, Discord warns that it’s “the most unstable version” of their platform. It suggests you use this client at your own risk, since the features are untested and may hinder your normal usage.
How to Install Discord Canary
Discord Canary is available across all major platforms where the app is already available, including Linux, Windows, Mac, and Android. Here’s how to install it on all those platforms. If you don’t want to install it, you can always try it out in a browser at canary.discord.com.
On PC
- Head over to the Discord Testing Clients support page.
- If you’re on Windows, click the link beside the Canary 64-bit under “Windows:”, or use this link to download the installer directly.
- If you’re on a Mac, click the link beside Canary under “MacOS:”, or use this link to download the DMG file. Similarly, Linux users can find the relevant link on the same page to get the installer.
- The installer should start downloading. You’ll find that Discord Canary is installed as an independent app alongside the stable Discord app.
- Once installed, open the app and enter your credentials to sign in. You’ll now be able to use Discord Canary and all of its developmental features.
The easiest way to differentiate between the stable and canary releases is by looking at the Discord icon. Canary has a yellow icon, whereas the stable version has the original icon.
On Android
- Considering you’re logged in to your Google account, click this Google Groups link.
- Tap on Join group. Once done, tap the link under “To get alpha builds:” text.
- Now, tap on Become a Tester.
- Head over to the Google Play Store and to the Discord app listing.
- Here, select Update if an update is available and once done, tap on Open.
- The splash screen should pop up first with the yellow logo, and that’s how you know you’re on Canary.
Unfortunately, on iOS, there’s no way to test out the Canary version on iOS. You can only run the Beta version by signing up for Discord TestFlight here.
And that’s how you can install Discord Canary on your PC and Phone. What are your thoughts on Discord as a messaging platform? Let us know in the comments.
Ever wondered how Discord releases its new features? Well, after the team decides what new feature to add, the developers work on the code and then release it to a team of testers for testing.
After a basic round of dev testing (also referred to as Unit testing), the code is released to the QA for testing. But, to get all possible hands-on board, Discord releases untested features to the interested few to sieve out as many bugs and application issues as possible.
This is how Discord Canary came into the picture.
In this post, we will detail to you the Discord Canary client and how to install it on your machine.
You will also find out what to expect from this early release build of Discord and whether or not it is your cup of tea.
Read on!
What Is Discord Canary?
Discord Canary is an alpha build of the Discord desktop application.
This is the first test build of Discord which is only intended for developers and testers. However, if you want to check out upcoming Discord features before they are rolled out, this is the build for you.
But the Discord Canary is bound to have a ton of bugs, as it is still part of the test bench.
While using it, don’t be surprised in case Discord crashes or errors start popping up. Software testers use this version of Discord to test out newly developed features, patches, or security/ bug fixes before it is released to the masses.
Alpha builds or software applications that are still under test are called Canary because earlier miners used to take a Canary with them to work in the mines to check any threats of Carbon monoxide poisoning.
If the Canary survives its trip into the mine and back it proves that the air isn’t poisonous. And that’s how Alpha builds got their name.
Is Discord Canary Allowed?
You can download a version of Discord Canary on your desktop or even access it from your browser. But being a test build, you are bound to encounter a lot of bugs in it.
Discord Canary is safe to use but it’s not at all stable. While running it, there are high chances that it might crash, some functionalities might not work, along with performance issues.
So it’s better to stick to your regular stable build for your daily usage.
The primary target audience of Discord Canary are developers, testers, and serious enthusiasts who are eager to know about the next big Discord feature.
The codebase of Discord Canary features the latest bug and security fixes in the form of patches and new functionalities in the form of minor releases.
Testers use this Alpha/ Canary build as their testbed to find defects and report them to the Discord team for resolution. The fixes are then incorporated in Discord Canary and once stable the feature gets cherry-picked and added to the stable build.
You can also download Discord Canary and report bugs to help their development community.
To do so you have to join the Discord Testers server and report bugs with proper evidence.
How To Get Discord Canary on Mac and other platforms?
You can install and use the Discord Canary client on your Windows or Mac, and also access it over the browser.
However, the Canary client isn’t available for iOS and Android and you have to use TestFlight and Alpha clients respectively.
Use Discord Canary Client on Bowser
By using Discord Canary on a browser you will be able to test a subset of features available on the desktop application. For example, on the browser version, push-to-talk voice access isn’t available.
Navigate to the Discord Canary website. You can log in by providing your username and password. The Canary will launch on your browser.
However, make sure you are not using Internet Explorer or use Edge browser version 17 and above.
Install Discord Canary Windows/Linux
You will require a Canary installer depending on your platform.
Click on this link to download Discord Canary Windows. The installer (.exe) will be downloaded on your local system. Then you can trigger the download and install Discord Canary on your Windows machine.
Linux users can start the Discord Canary download here or download a compressed version and then install it to start using Discord Canary Client on Linux.
The package is roughly 70MB in size for both Windows and Linux platforms. After the installation, log in with your Discord credentials to start using the testbed.
Install Discord Canary Client on Mac
You can download the Discord Canary client for Mac here. Once the Discord Canary download is complete, select the location on your Mac where you want to install the application.
After installation, you will see a golden Discord Canary icon. Launch the application and log in with your username and password to check out the latest features (in the rough).
Install Discord TestFlight on iOS
Visit the iOS app store and download the TestFlight app on your iPhone or iPad. TestFlight is the beta version of discord, which means it will have fewer bugs and is a bit more stable than Discord Alpha or Canary.
Make sure that app notifications are enabled so that you are notified whenever a new beta update is dropped.
Sometimes Discord only publishes an updated version of TestFlight only at the beginning of the month. So in case you are unable to download TestFlight from the app store, just wait until the start of the month.
Once TestFlight is successfully installed on your iOS device, sign up at their website to start testing the beta version.
At any point, you want to stop testing its features, launch TestFlight, and then open Discord, and tap the Stop Testing link at the bottom.
Install Discord Alpha on Android
Discord Alpha is a Canary equivalent for Android devices. Just like Discord Canary, you can test Discord Alpha to find bugs while using Discord on your Android smartphone.
Firstly you need to join the Discord Android Alpha tester group. To do so, navigate to the group and join it. Make sure that you are logged into Google with the same email id that you use to log into Discord.
Once that’s done head to the Discord Alpha page and click on Become a Tester button to start testing the Alpha version of the app on your Android smartphone.
In case you want to stop using Discord Alpha, you have to first navigate to the Discord Alpha Testers membership settings page and exit the group.
Then you have to uninstall Discord and then install it back to switch to the stable/ live version of the app.
Discord PTB (Public Test Build) is the Beta version of the Discord application for desktop. Discord Canary on the other hand is the Alpha version for desktop.
This means PTB will have fewer bugs than Canary but will definitely have more bugs than the stable version.
All high priority (from a business perspective) and high severity (from a functional point of view) bugs will still be present in Discord Canary, but the PTB will be devoid of showstoppers and critical issues.
Discord Canary will receive the fixes first. Once tested and confirmed the same fixes will be added to the PTB and then released as a patch in the stable build.
All in all, Discord Canary is a quite unstable Alpha build for desktop. You can use it to find defects and help Discord’s development community.
Also if you are a tech blogger and a Discord enthusiast, you can keep an eye on Discord Canary to find out about new features that are soon to be introduced.
You can also test out Canary on a browser. But for iOS devices only the Beta version of Discord, a.k.a TestFlight is available. Discord Alpha is the Canary equivalent on Android devices and lets you test upcoming features way early in the release.
