Windows 8.
Asphalt 8 Airborne
Guns 4 Hire
Medieval Apocalypse
Отличная action RPG с прекрасной графикой. Воюем с зомби.
TapTiles
Игра для тех, кто любит убивать время в игры наподобие маджонга, только в 3D. Поддерживает различные режимы игры от простых до более сложных, с которыми придется помучиться.
Radiant Defense
Одна из лучших игр в жанре Tower Defense (Башни), доступная на Android, есть и в Windows 8. По личному опыту — не самый простой TD, зато один из самых визуально интересных и с приятным музыкальным сопровождением.
Royal Revolt
Своеобразный «реверсивный» Tower Defense, где нападать и прорываться через препятствия врага придется вам. Позволит потратить еще несколько часов жизни на тактику и сражения.
Pinball FX2
Лучший пинбол для Windows 8 с красочной графикой и визуальными эффектами. К сожалению, бесплатно доступен только один стол, остальные можно скачать за плату.
Robotek
Windows Phone Central Roundup: Windows 8 Games
When people think of tablet games, they can’t help but bring to mind apps like Angry Birds, Temple Run, and Bejeweled. Gaming on Windows 8 can be more than just flinging neon colored birds at green pigs though. Whether you want to blast away zombie guts or put some pedal to the medal, here are eight Windows 8 video games sure to bring out the gamer in you.
Judge Dredd vs. Zombies
Our first high packed action game is based on the 2012 British-South African Sci-Fi film – Dredd 3D. I’m going to be honest and say that I haven’t seen the movie, but the game is sure a blast to play. Venture through Mega-City One acting as judge, jury, and executioner to take out zombie hordes in this top down 3rd person shooter. As you make your way through the game you can earn weapon and gear upgrades to truly become an unstoppable force for the undead to fear.
Judge Dredd vs. Zombies is free to play on your Windows 8/RT tablet, just like the Windows Phone 8 version. If it wasn’t for the fact that the game is free we might complain about the short length of gameplay – hopefully we can expect some DLC content in the future to expand our zombie destroying adventure.

Drift Mania Championship 2
This game delivers the ultimate racing experience on Windows 8 as you slip behind the wheel of your race car and join over 15 million other players worldwide. As the title suggest, this game is all about getting your drift on and pulling that hand break around corners. The title is a blast to play and with the new online multiplayer mode, you and your friend can go head to head in a drift battle. Your car can be updated with licensed aftermarket brands including Royal Purple, Whiteline, Mishimoto, and more. You can even get down to the nitty-gritty details such as balancing the weight of your car and adjusting the suspension.
The game costs $2.99 (just like the Windows Phone 8 version) and is well worth the price. If you are feeling cheap, a “lite” version is available for Free – I can’t say what you will be missing out on though.
All the latest news, reviews, and guides for Windows and Xbox diehards.

SoulCraft
Maybe cars and zombies aren’t you thing, maybe you prefer to play the part of an avenging angel fighting back demons to where they came from. If so, SoulCraft is the dungeon crawler Action RPG game for you. Humans are on the brink of discovering the secret of eternal life and for some reason, this also means that the apocalypse is upon us. Be a warrior of the heavens and help fight to keep the apocalypse at bay with powerful weapons, magical powers, and mystic enchantments. The servers behind SoulCraft will also backup you data and ensure that if you are switching between multiple devices or if you destroy your tablet – your game will always be saved and ready to go.
The game is free to play and a great download for any Windows tablet gamer. Just ask yourself if you are ready to take on the gates of hell before you start.

Royal Revolt
It is possible that you like to kick ass in-game, but also enjoy cuteness. If that is the case, you need to check out Royal Revolt. The game is described as a reverse tower defense style game with beautiful 3D graphics and intuitive control. For me, this was the biggest time drainer of all the games on today’s list. Sure, it wasn’t the most hardcore and the level where you lead a collection of rabbits seems a bit juvenile, but it is all in good fun and all boils down to a create tower defense style game. Plus the backstory for the game is all about getting revenge on your relatives and who hasn’t dreamed of that before?
Pick the game up now for the great price of free in the Windows App Store. You can check out our review of the game on Windows Phone 8 here.

Guns 4 Hire
Okay, enough of the cute games. We get back to high paced weaponry with Guns 4 Hire. Act out and control a squad of mercenaries to deliver pain and get paid. Your crew consist of the lieutenant, Faraday, Burns, and Boomer – and they are loaded with everything from Gatling guns to C4 explosives. The intense manly action doesn’t stop there, call in air strikes and engage in supreme tank battles. Guns 4 Hire is also free and ready to be downloaded from the Windows 8 App Store.

Hydro Thunder Hurricane
If you want to put the petal to the medal as the same time as you get wet, then Hydro Thunder Hurricane is the game for you! If the title sounds familiar it is because its sibling, Hydro Thunder, was a hit arcade game in the late 90s. The action packed sequel delivers thrilling and fast boat races through a variety of environments. We also can’t forget Nitrous can we? Pick up cans of nitrous to boost your boat and fly over obstacles. The game connects to Xbox Live and should provide you with tons of fun. We were also very impressed by the graphics within the game.
Hydro Thunder Hurricane is going to cost you a whopping $9.99 in the Windows App Store – while that may sound expensive, the game is definitely worth it (otherwise we wouldn’t be talking about it). You can also pick up the game on Xbox 360 for 1,200 Microsoft Points (around $15) or get the Windows Phone 7 version, Hydro Thunder GO.

Skulls of the Shogun
The next game on our list is probably the most popular and well known to date, Skulls of the Shogun. You, the powerful General Akamoto, have just become the shogun of Japan when you are killed by one of your adversaries. Now you are in the afterlife, but that doesn’t mean your control over others must end. Join forces with ghost-samurai warriors and magical monks to capture the Skulls of the Shogun and become an unstoppable force. The game is a top down turn based strategy adventure and features 20 levels of single player campaign. When you are done with that, you can hop online or on a local network to battle with four of your friends.
The game will cost you $9.99, but you can download a trial first to see if you enjoy it. You can check out our review of the game on Windows Phone 8 here.

Zombie HQ
Our last game is about surviving the zombie apocalypse and having a blast doing it. Zombie HQ doesn’t have a deep story line, but it doesn’t need one. Pick a quest from your rooftop headquarters and set out to smash in some brains. If you love gore and blood splattering all over your screen – this is your game. Make your way through the infested streets to upgrade and find new weaponry to assist in your missions.
The only aspect about the game I didn’t like is that there is no way to save your data if you uninstall it – you lose your progress. That being said, the game has great replay value. Grab it for free from the Windows App Store now!

Did we miss any of your favorite hardcore games, guys? What do you love to pull out and play on your Windows 8 tablet?
The Windows Store is not exactly bursting at the seams with great games, but you should be able to find a few titles to satisfy that gaming urge. In this roundup we run through our picks for the best Windows 8 games in different genres. We already picked out the ten best mobile games on any platform (including Windows 8), so we’ll cover a different line-up here. You may also be interested in our guide to the best Windows 8 apps.
Skulls of the Shogun ($10)
You’ll find fast and focused turn-based strategy in a stylized Japanese afterlife packed with samurais, monks, and generals in Skulls of the Shogun. The thickly outlined, retro-anime art style is enticing, the touch screen controls are easy to master, and the distilled tactical gameplay runs deeper than you might imagine at first play. With an absorbing 20-level campaign to beat and a solid multiplayer mode for four, it’s very easy to recommend.
The Gunstringer (Free)
Forget about Temple Run because The Gunstringer is free and it casts you as a skeleton cowboy instead of an Indiana Jones clone. It’s a typical endless runner game where you have to avoid deadly obstacles and collect as many coins and diamonds as possible in the process. It’s well-made and instantly accessible no matter what your tastes are like.
Halo: Spartan Assault ($7)
This top-down action shooter is set in the Halo universe and features a unique story about the origin of the Spartan Ops program, which takes place just before the events of Halo 4. It challenges you to battle the Covenant over 30 levels with the usual array of weaponry and vehicles. The presence of in-app purchases in a game you already paid for is always irritating, but this is still a solid game, and a must-buy for Halo fans.
Game Dev Tycoon ($8)
If it were available on Windows 8 we’d point you at Game Dev Story, but alas you’ll have to make do with this. It’s still a fun sim that challenges you to start your own game development studio and grow it from your bedroom confines to multi-million dollar stardom. The gameplay is simple, but it has that addictive hook, and it’s educational, too. You’ll learn about the history of gaming as you play through.
Toy Story: Smash It! ($5)
Casual physics-based games dominate all the app stores and this one is squarely aimed at kids, although it’s fun no matter what your age. You play as Buzz Lightyear, and have to throw bouncy balls at various toy structures to bring them tumbling down. The fewer balls you need, the higher your score will be, and there’s some replay value in trying to get three stars on all 75 levels. The fact that it’s 3D and it features characters and tunes from the Toy Story universe helps it stand out from the crowd.
Royal Revolt! (Free)
Here’s a twist on the tower defense genre with an RPG veneer. In this game, you find out what it’s like to be on the other side and send invading forces in to destroy your opponents and reclaim your castle. Use your limited energy to recruit the right blend of troops for victory across 58 levels. It’s cute, accessible, and fun. As you’d expect with a free title, you can beat the grind with in-app purchases.
Doom and Destiny ($3)
There’s a wealth of old-school RPG fun to be had in Doom and Destiny. The top down view on super-cute 16-bit visuals induces nostalgia, but the witty script pokes fun respectfully at the genre. It’s turn-based and has a gentle learning curve. The sheer variety and scope of the content on offer makes it worth more than the $3 cost of admission.
WordGap (Free)
This word game will put your vocabulary to the test, and it’s fun to battle it out against up to three of your friends. The basic premise is like a twist on Scrabble. Letters are all assigned a points value and you are given two that any word you come up with must start and end with. You also get two bonus letters that will boost your score if you can fit them in.
Ilomilo plus ($5)
It may bear more than a passing resemblance to Little Big Planet, but ilomilo is a worthy puzzle game that’s really challenging. The two, cute titular characters Ilo and Milo have to work together to beat each 3D block-filled level. This is actually a beefed up version of the original ilomilo release with some additional content. Try playing co-op with a friend if you really want to have some fun.
Hydro Thunder Hurricane ($10)
Does it matter if you remember the original arcade Hydro Thunder series? Of course not. All that matters is your desire to race boats at breakneck speeds around crazy environments. Think F-Zero on the water. This has loads of high-powered speedboats, courses with secret shortcuts, four game modes, and plenty of power-ups; what’s not to like? This Xbox 360 game works well on Windows 8.
That’s it for our best Windows 8 games roundup, but if you want to suggest a title then please post a comment and share it.

The Windows Store is said to be competing with Android’s Google Play, though for now we must admit that there are less opportunities when coming to software apps on Microsoft than on Google. But Windows Store is catching up as more and more developers are being “invited” to bring new platforms and apps for the Windows 8 users and fans. In that matter we can notice that for example the number of indie games apps which are available on Windows Store has been significantly increased lately. Due to same reasons, during the lines from below I will try to point out the best 10 Windows 8 Indie Games available for your tablet or laptop.
But what is an indie game and how can we differentiate such app from a classic one? When referring to indie games we think towards independent video games. Basically an indie game represents an app developed by individuals or small teams that has no official financial support. Thus these kinds of tools are made by passion and by users who want to share their passion with the Microsoft community. Unfortunately, as you could notice, on Microsoft and especially on Windows Store we have limited possibilities when coming to independent video games. This is also the main reason why Windows Store has less apps compared to Google Play or iOS, where most of the tools provided are developed by individuals and not by official video games publishers.

If you want to test the best Windows 8 indie games that are currently available, then don’t hesitate and check the review from below. I will try to describe only the games that received ratings of 4, or above, stars and apps that impressed me and also my colleagues. The list is randomly completed as it is really hard to say which game is the first on a top 10 list. But, since most of the tools are free distributed ones (or there are trial versions available for each app), test them in order to make a proper idea about the same.
Doom and Destiny
This is one of the most popular indie games available on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 platform. The game has been recently introduced on Windows 8 and currently is having 5 stars ratings on Windows Store. Doom and Destiny is a fun to play game on which you can spend many ours in playing single player campaigns. You will be fighting more than 300 types of enemies while gaining experience and learning new combat skills. The graphics are of course decent but not outstanding, as after all we are talking about a 2D video game, developed by independent users. If you want to try it, you can download a free trial variant or you can buy Doom and Destiny from Windows Store for no more than $3.49.
Griff Dangers
Griff Dangers in Mettle vs. Metal is a great and awesome indie game released recently on Windows Store. This is a side-scrolling action game where you can control a funny robot that needs to fight with its enemies. Your opponents will grow stronger during each play session, so your combat skills will be hardly tested. You will definitely find this game fun to play and also addictive as there are many missions to complete. You can download Griff Dangers from Windows Store for $1.49, while a free trial variant of the app is also available.
An Indie Game
As the name suggest, we have another indie game for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users. An Indie Game in an addictive auto-runner app where you can run, jump, shoot and swing as you try to eliminate all your enemies. The game is pretty cool as it features great graphics and an easy to manage game play. You will spend many ours trying to beat your own high score and also for unlocking new items, skills and worlds. You can install An Indie Game on any Windows 8 based tablet or device via Windows Store for only $1.99.
Soul Runner
An indie game that is quite similar with the previous described app is Soul Runner. So, if you like to run without doing anything else in particular, this app will be perfect for you. The game is somehow stressful as being an auto running kind of tool you will be constantly trying to out-best your performances. So establish new high scores, share it with your friends and try not to spend too much ours on this game. Soul Runner is available for free on Windows Store.
Road Runner Escape
Do you like old fashion cartoons? Then, this game will be perfect for you. Road Runner Escape is a funny game to play on your Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 devices, the app being suitable with all users – with little ones or of course with elder ones. Basically, on this tool your goal is to help Road Runner escape from Wile E. Coyote – how? By running of course; therefore try to use tricks in order to see how Wile E. Coyote is one more deceived and establish new high score on each run. You can download Road Runner Escape for free from Windows Store.

Crush-A-Zombie
Another addictive game, similar with the ones described above is Crush-A-Zombie. Even though Crush-A-Zombie is age restricted (16+) you have nothing to worry about as your task is in smashing zombies by taping on each creature. So, you need to try to whack as many zombies as possible for obtaining new high scores. If you miss more than 3 zombies you will have to start all over from the beginning, so this game is quite similar with auto-runner apps in term of self-motivating operations. Crush-A-Zombie can be anytime downloaded for free from Windows Store.
Indie Bingo
This is a very simple Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 indie game which can be downloaded for free from Windows Store. You can try this game if you want to play something different in matter of using your own judgment and not your ability of taping for running faster or for smashing zombies. Indie Bingo is therefore somehow similar with Sudoku as you need to pay attention and think on which you next move will be. You will play against the computer, the winner being the one who is first to cross out 5 rows, columns or diagonal.
Falling Sky
Falling Sky is a 5 stars rated arcade game in Windows Store. The game features a simple game play, with basic graphics. Your goal will be to get as high as you can by jumping / climbing the falling blocks – thus this is platform / puzzle game with an endless game play. Also you can play it by using the keyboard or the touchscreen of your Windows 8 tablet or device. Falling Sky is available for free, so you can anytime download it from Windows Store.
Don’t Stop Running
If you want to play an addictive game, then Don’t Stop Running might be the perfect solution for you. The game features infinite runner game play (which is basically about clicking or tapping the screen to jump up and avoiding in falling into the lava below), so there is not much to say about it. Don’t Stop Running is highly appreciated by the users who have tested it, as the app received 4 stars from the Windows 8 community. Test it on your own and try to out-best the existing high scores – do it for free by heading to Windows Store.
Feed The Zombie
This indie Windows 8 game can be played by the whole family. Don’t worry, it is not age restricted and the graphics isn’t showing inappropriate content like blood or other similar stuffs. You just have to help your zombie in finding its food. In order to do that you need to tap on, or towards the direction of your zombie’s food to help him find it. You have 30 seconds to feed the zombie as many mice as you can. If you like it, then you can download Feed The Zombie from Windows Store; the game is priced at $1.49.

There are some superb games available for Windows 8, but most of them aren’t free. So what do you do if you want some no budget gaming – and is it possible to top up your Gamerscore without paying for an Xbox Live title?
We previously looked at ten superb Windows 8 games that you shouldn’t miss. This time we’re going to take a look at eight titles in the Windows Store that are available free and waiting for you to install. These are all touch optimised games that won’t hurt your wallet. Some of them might even give your Gamerscore a boost…
The games selected below have been chosen based on the amount of free play you can get out of them – we’re not looking at trial or “lite” versions. Not all are 100% free – some might have in-app purchases or require a premium upgrade to unlock later levels, but on the whole these are some of the top free titles for Windows 8’s modern mode.
Six Guns
A remarkably good game for a free title, Six Guns is an Xbox Live title that offers single and multiplayer action. Starting off with a single player tutorial, it’s sort of an arcade version of Red Dead Redemption, with a selection of RPG style bonuses for you to collect between missions.
Your tasks in the game involve combating bandits, rescuing girls and generally being the classic stranger in town who is called upon to save the day. Your character, Buck Crosshaw, has a horse and a gun soon after the game begins, and completing missions generates credits and XP.
The style and depth of the game make it a surprising choice as a freebie, and achievements can be unlocked in single and online multiplayer mode.
Soulcraft
Although not an Xbox Live title, Soulcraft should nevertheless be one of your first Windows 8 gaming downloads.
The game begins with the option to use the existing character or create a new one. Several character slots are available, but only two can be used with the basic game – you’ll need to upgrade to a Gold account (you create your account when the game launches for the first time) in order to remove adverts, gain extra slots and enjoy other bonus features in the game. Note that omitting to do this doesn’t impact your enjoyment of Soulcraft.
Missions yield bonuses and XP, enabling you to improve your weaponry and gain better attacking and defensive abilities. New weapons, outfits and other bonuses are available to purchase with in-game cash, as well as in-app upgrades. Bosses and hordes alike are impressive, and all require different strategies to defeat them – exactly what you would expect from a game of this type!
As polished as a desktop or console RPG, Soulcraft is a superb example of Windows 8 metro games.
Taptiles
This free Mahjong style game is fast and frenetic. It’s also singularly responsible for me losing hours of my life when I was supposed to be working (researching this article notwithstanding).
Supported by a small advert when your progress through the levels is brought to a halt, the idea is to match the symbols on the cubes to remove them from play before the clock runs down, eventually ending up with no cubes to complete the level. On the way there are bonuses for speed and special cube pairs that will award a time bonus, remove a random number of cubes from the current game and even turn them all into crystals for you to easily dispose of.
Various achievements are also available, such as Lighting Match and Time Tile Tiger, with each adding 15 to your Gamerscore.
Jetpack Joyride
Like Taptiles, I’ve spent far too much time playing Jetpack Joyride, both on Windows 8 and on Windows Phone 8 (although it is also available on Android and iOS).
The aim of the game is simple – wearing the top secret jetpack of the title, you must guide your character through the defences, avoiding lasers, missiles and electric zappers while collecting coins, tokens and vehicles to aid you in your escape. Although coins are important and spin tokens give you the chance to win bonuses (including an extra life or a head start on your next attempt), the real measure of success in Jetpack Joyride is distance – the further you go, the better your score.
Coins, meanwhile, can be spent on upgrades such as different jetpacks and vehicle improvements such as coin magnets that make collecting easier. Lots of fun, Jetpack Joyride is an Xbox Live game, with achievements such as Gold Digger (collecting 20 coins while dead) and Romeo Alpha Delta (reaching 5 km in distance within the game while flying) among those waiting to be unlocked for Gamerscore points.
Endless Skater
Going back to games such as 720° in the old arcade cabinets and through the more recent skateboarding titles, I’ve been allergic to this sport in all its forms ever since I fell off a board in 1979.
Endless Skater has challenged my skateboarding perceptions, however. This seemingly simple game makes good use of a Windows 8 tablet’s gyroscope (or indeed an Xbox 360 controller, also supported) to enable you to perform increasingly complex stunts as your skateboarding dude travels through various urban courses.
There are bonuses to be unlocked in this game, although they do rely on you to be able to stay on your board for a reasonable length of time rather than crashing into steps/cars/bins/etc. Still, there is plenty in this game to engage even the worst skateboarder (that would be me) and the depth of play (new moves, two gaming modes and various items to collect) is considerable for a free title.
Awesome Zombie Sniper [No Longer Available]
Ad supported and proad of it, Awesome Zombie Sniper is pretty much what you would expect from a game with such a title.
I’ll be honest- it can be frustrating, with survival rates very low when you first start. Several in-game achievements (not Xbox Live) can spur you on, however, and with a sniper rifle with zoom lens, health packs and ammo littered around the zombie-infested streets, you should soon get to grips with the gameplay and become familiar with the simple task: kill zombies before they kill you.
Here’s a hint for Windows 8 tablet owners — touch controls are very tough; unless you like a big challenge on a brand new game, fall back on the mouse and keyboard WASD control standard.
LEGO Hero Factory Brain Attack [No Longer Available]
A fun shooter for a popular brand, LEGO Hero Factory Brain Attack is essentially a two player game that can be enjoyed in single player mode.
The aim is simple – clear the various in-game locations of enemy units, collecting bonus items as you go to upgrade and using them within the mission if things get a bit difficult.
While perhaps not the greatest game in this list, it has its own achievements for you to unlock as you progress and is definitely well regarded by fans of the LEGO Hero Factory brand.
If you’re looking for a basic shooter with good graphics and a hi-tech back story, this is the free game you’re looking for!
Samurai vs Zombies Defense
Let’s face it – zombie apocalypse or not, the undead are everywhere. It should come as no surprise, then, to find them twice in this list.
With Xbox Live integration, Samurai vs Zombies Defense is a left-right scrolling tower defense game in which your samurai defeats zombies with his narrow selection of moves. Most of your movement in the game is left and right as the samurai advances and retreats; he has an automatic attack whenever an enemy is in range. You don’t get to do much slicing except when the odds are uneven and the nuclear option of a 360° katana strike triggers. As you level up, later waves can be attempted with automated companions.
Various bonuses are available, along with in-app purchases (although the game is ad-supported) for currency that offer some advanced enhancements. Full of character thanks to the overall visual design and soundtrack, Samurai vs Zombies Defense is a fun, casual diversion with optional depth if you want something more demanding.
Whats Your Favourite Free Windows 8 Game?
Who would have thought 12 months ago that there would be this many great games for Windows 8 that you don’t have to pay for? It’s almost as if the doom-mongers were wrong…
Seriously though, this selection of games will give you some great gaming experiences, they might even enable you to improve your Xbox Live Gamerscore, and they don’t have to cost you anything. Not only that but they’re a great selling point for a dedicated Windows 8 device. If you’re looking for more «modern» games, please see our Best Of Windows 8 page for other suggestions.
Of course, we might have missed one. So what’s your favourite free Windows 8 game? Let us know in the comments!
