  1. Скачиваем и устанавливаем SBPCI_WebDrvsV5_12_01.exe;
  2. Перезагружаем Windows 98;
  3. Скачиваем eapci8m.ecw и копируем в папку C:\Windows\System;
  4. Щелкаем по «Моему компьютеру» на рабочем столе правой кнопкой мыши, выбираем «Свойства», идем на вкладку «Устройства»;
  5. В разделе «Звуковые, видео и игровые устройства» находим «SB PCI(WDM)», щелкаем по нему правой кнопкой, выбираем «Свойства»;
  6. Переходим на вкладку «Settings», жмем на кнопку «Add WaveSet» и указываем файл C:\Windows\System\eapci8m.ecw;
  7. Жмем «ОК», перезагружаем Windows 98;

The following instructions and screenshots will help you to correctly setup the sound drivers for Windows 98SE in VMWARE. This will give you sound that isn’t distorted or choppy using drivers that are already present in Windows 98.

First start VMWare and select Windows 98 (or any name you gave the Windows 98 installation). Select “VM” from the top menu within VMWare and select “Settings” which is shown in (Fig 1) below.

Fig 1

Then once on the “Settings” screen click the “Options” tab which is shown in (Fig 2), and then highlight the section under “Working directory” which is shown in (Fig 3 and 4), and right click and select copy.

Fig 4

Now open a folder on your computer and paste what you copied into the area shown on (Fig 5), and hit the enter key.

Fig 5

Fig 6

Now locate the VMX file in the folder by right clicking on each file and selecting “Properties” until you locate the one that ends in “.vmx” (Fig 7). Once located right click this file and select “Open with” and then select “Notepad” (Fig 8).

Fig 7

Fig 8

If “Notepad” isn’t showing on the list then click on “Choose another app” and if you still can’t see Notepad then click on “More apps” and find “Notepad” on the list (Fig 9).

Fig 9

Once in the “Notepad” scroll down to the bottom and copy and paste the following in a new line (Fig 10):

sound.virtualDev = “sb16”

Fig 10

Then click “File” and “Save” and close the Notepad (Fig 11).

Fig 11

You are now ready to install the sound drivers from within the Windows 98 Virtual Machine. Click on the “Start” menu in Windows 98 and select “Settings” and then “Control Panel” as shown in (Fig A).

Fig A

Double click on “Add New Hardware” and click “Next” and “Next” again as shown in (Fig B, C, and D)

Fig B

Fig C

Fig D

Select “No, the device isn’t in the list” and click Next (Fig E).

Fig E

Next select “No, I want to select the hardware from a list” and click Next. (Fig F)

Fig F

Now scroll down and find “Sound, video and game controllers”, click on this and then click on Next (Fig G)

Fig G

Now scroll down and find “Creative” on the left side, click on this and on the right hand side scroll down and locate “Sound Blaster 16 or AWE-32 or compatible” and click on the Next button. (Fig H)

Fig H

Click on “Next” again and then click on “Finish” and then click “Yes” to restart Windows 98 (Fig I, J ad K)

Once the virtual machine restarts Windows 98, you should have sound without any distortions.

Windows 98 Sound in VMware

Windows 98 Sound in VMware

By default, even after installing the VMWare Tools provided by VMWare (Player, Workstation or Server), the VMWare Tools package still does not install an audio driver, even though it installed a mouse driver and a SVGA driver for true colour graphics. However, most of the time we would like some audio in Windows 9x guests, whether to test old Win9x applications or to have a copy of Windows to run Windows-only software that refuses to run under Linux or Wine.

Requirements

  1. DirectX 9.0 (important, very important, without it you’ll get the dreaded NTKERN.VXD and MMDEVLDR.VXD errors)
  2. Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI drivers (the card emulated by VMware)
  3. eapci8m.ecw (if you want to play MIDI files), backup download
  4. Windows 9x (98 FE or SE, but should work on all versions of Windows) running in…
  5. A VMWare product (any, be it Server, Player or Workstation) with VMWare Tools installed.

Steps

  1. Run SBPCI_WebDrvsV5_12_01.exe and install it, but do not reboot.
  2. Move eapci8m.ecw to C:\windows\system.
  3. Install DirectX 9 (directx_9c_redist.exe).
  4. Now restart the system.
  5. After logging in, sound should start working. Enjoy!

Troubleshooting The NTKERN.VXD and MMDEVLDR.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code 2)

This error message results because the code used by Creative Technology, Inc uses APIs from DirectX or other supporting libraries that are not incuded by default with Windows 98. Installing the DirectX 9 package did however fix the problem.

This driver is really meant for a Creative Sound Blaster PCI128, but it just happens to work fine on VMware! Anybody’s VMware player/workstation which refuses to play audio despite tools installed can now use this as an alternative! This sound driver is reported to work with many VMware installations, but have caution and backup your virtual machine in case something goes wrong! In case you also need a video driver, try VEMP as a last resort! This driver only works with Windows 98FE and 98SE!

Windows 98 or 98SE CD (disc required during installation!)

Notes:

**If you are seeking a more universal VMWare driver, try this one. Be warned, the alternative driver does not work on 98SE despite working on 98FE.

**This driver has not been tested on Windows ME!
